Full Version: Recent transactions in minor league system
Royal Rooters > WE'RE TALKIN' BASEBALL > DOWN ON THE FARM
Cambridge
Two lefties, each of whom was interviewed by RSN this summer, were in the news recently. According to Baseball America, Phil Seibel has been re-signed, and David Sanders released.

Hopefully Phil, who battled a shoulder injury this year, is healthy and can make it back to Boston in 2005.

And best of luck to the newly married David. We wish you well, wherever it is that you move on to from the Red Sox family.

I remember Siebel's brief stint with the big club this year, but don't remember his minor league stats... is he someone that the sox are high on or is he more of a career minor leaguer?

He only pitched 40 or so innings in AAA in 2004 due to an arm injury (apparently nothing serious). At 25-years-old, he's still young. He's not a high-ceiling guy, but as a lefty he has a shot to be a solid MLB pitcher.

A few guys we've signed recently:

Kris Wilson: 28 year old RH pitcher from KC organization. 14-9, 5.32 in 235 MLB innings. He was 10-13 in AAA last year.

Jason Kershner: 28 year old LH pitcher (reliever) from Toronto. 3-5, 4.22 in 100 MLB innings.

Chip Ambrese: 25 year old OF from Florida organization. 20 HRs and 26 SBs in AA last year.

Josh McKinley: 25 year old Utility Guy from Texas organization. 14 HRs in AA last year.

Tim Bausher: 25 year old RH pitcher from Colorado organization. Was 4-8, 4.20 in AA last year. Apparently throws very hard but has battled injuries.

And, alas, Earl Snyder has signed with Tampa Bay. Best of luck with the D-Rays, Earl. The Sox organization has lost a quality person.

Hopefully my favorite minor leaguer, (Snyder) gets a chance in the bigs with Tampa. A good guy, and IMO, a solid player. Best of luck, Earl.

Wow! Well, I guess that's a good thing and a bad thing. Good thing he will have a chance with a new organization that relies heavily on recruiting within. Bad thing that we had to let this caged bird go*.

*yeah... that last sentence reads as bad as it sounded in my head.

This guy sounds interesting. Wonder if he's anygood. Appears to have good speed and power.

From Rotoworld:

QUOTE
The Red Sox are soon expected to announce the signing of Billy McMillon and Simon Pond to minor league contracts.
McMillon would be a candidate for a spot as Boston's fifth outfielder, but the team will keep looking for an upgrade.

Simon Pond was on the 1996 Vermont Expos NY-Penn League Championship team, so I saw him play 8 years ago...man how time goes by...

From Rotoworld:

QUOTE
Red Sox signed LHP Jason Kershner to a minor league contract.
Kershner was a pleasant surprise for Toronto in 2003, posting a 3.17 ERA in 54 innings, but he had a 6.04 ERA before being sent down 2 1/2 months into last season. He won't have much of a chance of winning a spot on Boston's roster. Dec. 21 - 6:55 pm et

QUOTE
Red Sox signed outfielder Billy McMillon to a minor league contract.
McMillon, 33, got to spend much of the last two seasons in the majors with Oakland, but after struggling in 2004, he's probably on his way back to being one of the best players in Triple-A. Dec. 21 - 6:53 pm et

QUOTE
Red Sox signed outfielder Chip Ambres to a minor league contract.
Ambres, a 1998 first-round pick, hit .241/.352/.449 and stole 26 bases in 35 attempts for Double-A Carolina last season. He's never going to fulfill former expectations, but he still might end up as a useful reserve at some point. He just turned 25 this month. Dec. 21 - 6:52 pm et

QUOTE
Red Sox signed infielder-outfielder Simon Pond to a minor league contract.
Pond, 28, got 49 at-bats with the Blue Jays last season, hitting .163/.250/.265. He'll be a regular at Triple-A Pawtucket. Dec. 21 - 6:51 pm et

Sorry...this should be in Down on the Farm.
intheowetrust
i have been hearing about Chip Ambres for year as a top prospect, but not much has come of it.
Simon Pond or as he was called in Faithful Simon Bond, i thought he looked like a decent player for the Jays last season. could be some good trade value there.

also from rotowire:
Billy Traber (P) BOS - AAA 12/21/2004
The Red Sox signed Traber to a minor league contract on Tuesday. Traber will likely start the season at Triple-A but could join Boston with a strong start to the season.

John Stephens (P) BOS - AAA 12/21/2004
The Red Sox signed Stephens to a minor league contract on Monday. He'll probably spend most, if not all, of 2005 at Triple-A.

That's odd, because other reports had him re-signing with us as far back as October 29.

Any word on my boy Daubach? Does he still have a minor league contract with the Sox or will he be trying to get a job with another big league club. I personally wouldn't mind seeing him play at Pawtucket again this year. He also doesn't seem to be hindering anybody's progress.

In the "Transactions" column of today's NY Times, it indicated that he signed a minor league contract with the Mets. The Mets also apparently signed a minor league deal with Andy Dominique as well.

I saw Pond play in Louisville last year when he was with Syracuse. He was easily the best player in that game. I look forward to seeing how well he can do for us.
