HBO documentary chronicles title
12/07/2004 11:07 PM ET
By Alan Ginsberg / Special to MLB.com

HBO Sports' documentary "Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino" does not debut until Friday night at 8 p.m. ET, but some people got an early look at the film -- a revision of the Emmy-winning 2003 documentary "The Curse of the Bambino" -- Tuesday night at a screening at The Greatest Bar in Boston.
The film, which features no interviews with Red Sox players, instead chooses to focus on the relationship between Red Sox Nation and its team, and the curse -- or lack thereof -- itself.

"The history of the Red Sox is woven in the fabric of each of the six New England states," the film's narrator says soon after it starts.

"Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino" explores that history through interviews with fans and local media members, including Leigh Montville, Dan Shaughnessy, Jackie MacMullan and Bud Collins of The Boston Globe; Sean McAdam and Art Martone of The Providence Journal; authors Glenn Stout, Robert Creamer and Howard Bryant; radio personalities Glenn Ordway, Eddie Andelman, Mike Barnicle and Ted Sarandis; and celebrities such as Andover's Michael Chiklis, Boston's Mike O'Malley, Worcester's Denis Leary and Cambridge's Lenny Clarke and Robert B. Parker. Pawtucket Red Sox chairman and owner Ben Mondor also appears.

After the introduction, the documentary dives into the meat of its subject matter, beginning with the early history of the Red Sox and Babe Ruth's time with the club, airing comments from everyone from Creamer -- a Ruth biographer -- to Peter Casey of Worcester, who was born in 1900 and saw Ruth play for the Red Sox.

Soon, the film has progressed to the end of the 1978 season and Bucky Dent's three-run home run for the Yankees, propelling them past the Red Sox in a one-game playoff. Dent even appears, identified as "BF" Dent, a reference to the expletive middle name Dent acquired throughout Red Sox Nation following his home run.

After the documentary accelerates to fill in the gaps between the 1920 sale of Ruth to the Yankees and Dent's home run, including the 1946 World Series, the 1967 beaning of Tony Conigliaro and Carlton Fisk's walk-off home run in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series, it digresses into a debate about the existence of the curse. Both Shaughnessy -- author of the book The Curse of the Bambino -- and Dave Kruh, the author of a play of the same name, speak early in the discussion.

Even late Boston Globe columnist Will McDonough argues against the curse, saying, "You give me the best team and you can have the curse on your side. We'll see who wins."

The Red Sox's history is quickly proposed as an alternative explanation for their struggles before the film turns its attention to 1986 as the genesis of the idea of a curse.

In that segment, the inning leading up to Bill Buckner's famous gaffe is recounted nearly pitch-by-pitch by several of the documentary's interview subjects.

After briefly stopping in 2003 for Aaron Boone's home run in Game 7 of the ALCS, the film jumps almost immediately to the 2004 ALCS before speeding through the World Series.

Some in attendance had hoped to see more about the World Series, but for many, the film evoked the same emotions they felt watching the postseason unfold.

"It brought the whole experience back to me," said Megan Gillespie of Brighton. "I didn't think the moment would be reinvented, but once again it did and gave me chills and sweats and tears."

"As a Yankee fan, I have to admit I got caught up in the whole fever of the World Series and the same here," said Michael Estefani, who moved to the Boston area from New York 12 years ago.

After its premiere, the hour-long film will air Sunday at 9 a.m. ET, Dec. 16 at 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Dec. 22 at 8 p.m., Dec. 24 at 10 a.m., Dec. 26 at midnight and Dec. 28 at 11 a.m.

This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

I've heard conflicting reports on this. Isn't it just the old crappy documentary they had on before, except now they tagged on a new ending?
macd23
not sure. i never saw the other documentary, although it wouldn't really surprise me.
either way, knowing HBO's reputation for good documentaries, i'll be tuning in.
Edmund Dantes
If it's just a rehash of the old one (with a new ending), you'll be wasting your time. The original was annoying to watch.
Empyreal
Speaking of rehashing the curse concept, here's the one, the only, Curly-Haired Boyfriend with his comeback.
macd23
yeah its definately a revision:

i never saw the original, and curse talk never gets me all hot and bothered like many others, so i'll kick back and enjoy this, especially since now it has a happy ending.

The original was good, yet incredibly annooying. Ben Affleck (puke) narrated it and they interviewed everyone and their mother about the curse. I did watch and of course recorded it, like all insane fans, but it was not a solid HBO documentary that one would expect. I will be tuning on Friday, but not with my hopes up. I would rather watch the WS DVD or Faith Rewarded.
FoulkeingRight
I thought the first one was great. I liked the fact it didnt focus on players, but everyone else. I hope this one will be as good.
ability
I thought the first was pretty funny. Dennis Leary is always classic when talking about the Sox.
Sox Sweep Again
An updated version of "The Curse of the Bambino" is on HBO starting right now.

I'm watching it. I didn't believe in curses and never will.

I'm watching it to see the joy and re-live vicariously, through the added highlights and interviews, the 2004 Season.

Watching or not?
PineTarHelmet
Not watching because I'm one of the few people who doesn't get HBO. Shocking, isn't it?

Hmm I never saw this thread when I just started one over on the main board.
Duh.

Anyway I'm watching this because I liked the first one, I have no problem with Ben Affleck, and would like to see the new interviews.

Anyway I'm watching and it opens with more fan reaffirmations that "the Curse" was B.S.

For some reason, Affleck's narration seems to be REPLACED! blink.gif
Nettles
I just finished watching it. It was good even though they just added a little.

Also, I apologize for Graig catching the last out in 1978.
Seabass
Not bad at all...any excuse to see Foulke's look of disbelief when he catches the chopper is good enough for me.
macd23
that was fantastic........that reduced me to a wimpering mess after seeing 86 broken down play by play and seeing all the fans ready to celebrate(i was only 6 at the time, so i missed)......the new happy ending was awesome. i am going to order or tape a copy of this.

OK OK we get it. Graig Nettles is your cousin, he was a Yankee on the '78 team. His coatails must really be holding him down right now.

The horse is already on the way to the glue factory...

I liked it too, especially the added real-fan interviews, but WHY was Affleck's heartened narration replaced?? That was weird...

I enjoyed the HBO special. It took a lot from "Curse of the Bambino" special earlier this year. They broke down a lot of the 1986 World Series, and of course the ending was wonderful. I like the narration that Liev Schreiber did. A tear came to my eye when they showed Sox fans in graveyards putting Sox flags on the graves of their departed loved ones. Nice way to close it out..........

I enjoyed it too. I liked the removal of Ben "I'm RSN's Spokesman" Affleck. The spot where everyone hesitated as they were choking up made me cry.

I'm such a wuss when I think about the fact we finally won.

I missed it. I'm sure it'll be on a few thousand times... biggrin.gif

I noticed it was on quite a few times this week, vvac. You'll get a chance to see it. And you can even be 40 mins late if you saw the first version.

As someone who was in it, I thought George (the director) had to balance the anti-Curse people plike me with the CHB's of the world. The nicest part of the project was that the entire curse was dispelled in the end as a hoax at best. In other words. all we needed was better pitching and defense.

Shaun, great job last night. It was a good show-

And I never realized you were from Wellesley- I was born at Newton/ Wellesley.
MargoAdamsLoveChild
Tivo'd it because I had to work last night, then watched it when I got home at 2 a.m. I cried like a schoolgirl in a barfight.

I thought they did a great job at interspersing the new stuff and framing the old stuff with the new WS Champion reality. Bravo, HBO.

Also loved the new narrator. A little more documentarian than Ben Affleck, although I do like Ben and don't understand when people hate on him for being famous and liking the Sox.

And of course, that Shaun Kelly guy was the absolute star of the show. wink.gif

One question though ... did I ACTUALLY see CHB choked up when recalling the final out of the World Series and considering what it meant to Red Sox Nation? My first reaction was that he faked it, but I was torn between that snap judgment and feeling like I should give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Any thoughts?

EDIT: One thing I wondered that maybe jacklamabe can answer was how they went about choosing the Sox fans who participated. Anyone have insider info? I'm curious.

Shaun, great job again. Your story about the night of Game 6 continues to be my personal favorite.

And JtB? You're also a member of the BAN/W posse?

Nice job, my friend. As someone who was also anti-Curse like yourself, I'm glad to see our view put across in the documentary that this whole "curse" business was load of crap. Thanks so much!

Keep on celebrating!!

I was banned over at NYYFans for my comments concerning Giambi and steriods last week and the 2003 American League Championship being tainted. "We few, we happy few..."

for those of you with Comcast ON DEMAND may be able to check out if it can be picked up there...

The greatest part was the montage of reaction to the final out of the WS....total silence...

When I was at home I thought I was abnormal as I stood in front of the TV in stunned amazement. My husband broke the spell when he said you did it honey (like I willed it...) Since '67 when I was fully hooked (before that the fervor was osmosed thru my dad). I just felt such relief and gratitude.

Never saw the first special (thank the lord) and the narration by Liev Schreiber was first rate (he does lots of PBS stuff).

A must watch again....my 8 yr old daughter was thoroughly hooked.

He was thinking about the potential lost royalties and wondering if his Reversing the Curse book will ever do as well as his previous endeavour.

Actually, I do believe he was genuinely moved, but he'll be the first to dip the pen into the inkwell at the first glimpse of under-achievement by the team... The Revenge of the Curse, Episode 3

Wasn't this the same great narrator who does the When it was a game series for HBO? he brought a lot of value to the show
MTSUDaff
Saw this the other night while I was at a friends house. Absolutely great. I was literally getting chills when I was watching the replay of Schilling pitching in game 6. Almost brought a freakin' tear to my eye. After watching that, Im considering building a statue of Schilling and putting it in my front yard. Bronzed, of course.

This is coming out on DVD from HBO on March 29, according to someone who works for them.

I emailed the HBO store asking if it would be available for purchase, and I got this somewhat informal response:

Not to worry, Reverse the Curse is scheduled to be released on DVD on March
29, 2005(all DVD release dates are subject to change).

It was Liev Schreiber, who does most of HBO's narration on sports docs. He was in "The Manchurian Candidate" remake, one of the "Scream" movies, apparently, and some other stuff. He's pretty good.

Liev Schreiber is an excellent narrator. He's done many HBO and PBS specials. He brings a lot more to the table than Ben Affleck does......
