Carl Pavano - S - FLA

The Yankees and Carl Pavano have agreed to terms on a four-year, $44 million contract, Sportsticker reports.
According to agent Scott Shapiro, Pavano made the decision to sign with the Yankees early this morning. He'll join a Yankee rotation that is still in flux beyond the top two starters. Javier Vazquez and Kevin Brown remain candidates to be traded and deals with Jaret Wright and Eric Milton still up in the air.

Edit: At least they overpaid!

I don't mind this at all. I never cared too much about him anyway. I was too scared because I wasn't too sure that he could actually perform well in the AL. I also think that he is hyped up way too much. He had 1 solid year and teams were going after him like crazy. This move doesn't scare me at all (that he is with the Yanks). I think that he is a good looking guy but that is it.

How well do Sox players do against him? The Yanks needed pitching though, so it does help them out. I just don't know what the expectations of Pavano should be.

Good day, hopefully the two rumors I have heard are true. Pavano signed AND Jaret F&*%ing Wright failed his physical!!!!!!!!!!

Things are looking good today!

Looks like the Yanks realize their mistake and are trying to get out of the deal with Jaret Wright. Hopefully they are stuck with that aweful contract for a sure to be bust.

The Yankees just got themselves a pretty good pitcher...but they also paid a great deal for him. Aren't they also going to start paying Vasquez 11 million this year, provided he is not traded?

Damn I hope we aren't stuck with him! Lemme know where he is, I'll fix that shoulder up good for his next physical!!

I don't know a single Yankee fan who likes him at all. In my basement I have a framed NY Post front page showing him walking off the mound with his head down amidst a sea of middle fingers from the fans during game 1 of the 1998 ALCS when he gave up 5 runs in 1/3 of an inning. Every Yankee fan friend I have HATES this guy like he's John Rocker. Hell he was public enemy #1 in NY long before half the Yankee fans had heard of Pedro Martinez!

The very well spoken (albiet fiery) Paul O'Neill called him a 'little punk' in '98 and that's the closest thing I have ever heard to criticism from him. You wouldn't know it by his on field demeanor..... but Paul O'Neill is a VERY nice guy whom EVERYONE got along with and I have never heard him criticize an opponent or teammate... save Jaret Wright. That tells me he wouldn't fit with Torre, Derek, Mo, Bernie, and Co. Wright is a jackass with the IQ of a houseplant.... I still wonder why in the world they even TRIED to sign him. He should be a Met so he can beat up Pizza boys with Spencer and Garcia in March!

It's a solid signing for the MFY. He may be being overpaid but if his stats progress like they have in the past 3 season he will earn every cent.

It now looks like Pavano used the Sox to drive up his price with the MFY. All this "I don't want to pitch in NY" and "want a mentor like Schilling" was just a way of shaking a couple extra mil out of SiaS.
FoulkeYeah!
Pavano Vs Boston, 1 career start and it was at Fenway in 03, never recorded the 1-st out.

0.0 innings, 6 hits, 6 earned, 1 HR 0 SO, 1 loss

Was he the pitcher when the Sox scored 14 runs before the first out? If he was that would be some accomplishment(sarcasm).

Exactly- so I'm glad it wasn't US that overpaid.

I believe I mentioned very early in this thread (or perhaps another thread, I really don't give a flying ######) that my bet was that Pavano coming out so early in the process (wasn't it like the day after the WS?) and saying he didn't want to play in New York was merely a ploy to get the Yankees to chase him even harder and pay him even more.

I think I was right. Which makes me better than all of you dolts who actually wasted time discussing this over the past month. So don't even talk to me from now on, beotches.

Seriously though, I think he considered all the other teams, but probably always had his eye on the Yanks as the biggest payday. He wasn't very good in the first trimester of his career, he's gotten a bit better in the 2nd, and he realizes that obscurity is one elbow blowout away. He wants his payday, and he wants it in this contract. And the way you do that, especially when you have a toppled despot in desperate need of some pitching and face-saving, is to immediately tell them you're not interested. Then reel them in like a Bassmaster at 4 a.m. on ESPN 2.

Just lets not have everybody pontificating on how the Yankees overpaid so much, because we all know that had the Sox done it we would have loved it.

Gentlemen, gentlemen, gentlemen.

Congratulations Pavano. I'm not going to lie, I would've loved to get you, but we got Wells - and I'm looking foward to see him try to earn his Sox - he's got alot of ground to gain, but I pretty much knew when we inked him Pavano was all but out of the race. Always ironic these FA signings and rumors, especially when friends and everyone else predicts you to sign with the Sox (including Schill who wined and dined him) - including similar offers - always a business - always entertaining. Gotta love the offseason. I expected the MFY's to get a big man anyways - thing is - I'm not sure he's such a "big man". I'm not going to lie, I was kind of like "Pavano?" when I heard the news of his free agency - I mean - kind of a sleeper to me. (I don't pay much attention to the Marlins latley)

Anyways, much to look foward to as I sip on this vodka tonic and stare at my 2004 World Champions banner - a banner I am still coming to understand is my own and my city's smile.gif It's still hitting me as I'm sure it's still hitting all of you. I f**king love the offseason man. I want Renteria and def. to see Pedro inked this weekend. I'm also dreaming up the possibilities including Tek (please God), Hudson (?? Never know ??), etc. etc.

Either way, our club is making great movies - try and keep up with the champs. (I can boast now, right?!)

EDIT - MALC - Your post cracked me up, haha.

Except that not all of us would have. So there.

I've always loved that little RSN rebuttal chestnut. "Oh, if the Sox did it, you'd be fine with it."

What? Why? That's a really silly and vaguely insulting assumption.

I wish Carl the best, but we got a comparable pitcher in Wells for half the time and a fraction of the cost. I'll take that everyday, especially considering the FA class it frees us up for (Santana/ Mulder/ Zito and Sheets)

This is how I felt about Pavano the whole time(except what you put at the end haha). It sounded as if he was a superstar. He did have a good past-season, but other than that, he hasn't been nothing stellar. I'm always suspicious of players who have their best season in their contract years. Even though he is only 28.

Let the Yankees have him. I feel like he is going be like Javier Vazquez. Really can't explain why, but I have this guy feeling.
