Gammons job is no more difficult than any other reporters. He simply has to take the information, varify it, process it and determine how accurate it may be and what to report as fact.
Gammons has gotten into the habit of "sensationalism". Why on Friday, when most reporters were (apparently correctly) saying that talks have cooled, and it might not be workable...did he report "THE DEAL IS DEAD...AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!!!!!"
That is the difference. Why today isn't he saying, talks are heating up? No he comes out with "DONE DEAL...AROD TO BOSTON IN 36 HOURS".
Now which is it. He spoke both HEADLINES with equal conviction.

Well I guess I'm a sucker because I was starting to believe, happily, that this A-Rod deal wasn't going to happen. Now it sounds like it is. I don't think it's a good move for the Sox but maybe I'm not seeing the whole picture. I just don't believe losing Manny and Nomar and replacing them with A-Rod (who, in a small sample size, doesn't hit well in Fenway) and the many mentioned acquisitions from the Nomar trade strengthens this year's team. I've loved the additions to the pitching staff and felt that those additions, to last year's team, put this team over the top. Now I feel like we're weakening this year's team offensively; even if the improved pitching makes up for it. I guess I'm just not that much of an A-Rod fan. And I certainly hope the Sox don't pay the $3-$5 million per year of Manny's contract; that would be foolish.

I didn't mean to come across as implying that the person's source isn't credible. I just find it odd that his remark came after the Gammons interview on The Dan Patrick Show and it fit the time parameters that Gammons had set. I just find it iffy. Then again, no one thought it was really Schill on the net a few weeks ago. I looked at the post as convienent timing. In any event, I hope this deal gets done or shelved soon so everyone can move on.

From Gasbag, All players in the trade have been agreed upon. Now it's up to the owners. Gasbag tells espnnews to get back to me in a few minutes. Also, Texas has agreed with Todd walker on a 2 year deal. Nomar to LA looks like a go as well.

A-Rod update: Here's what we know about the Alex Rodriguez trade talks:
The Red Sox and Rangers are actively talking about this again, and a source tells Peter Gammons the owners have edged closer -- and it's possible the deal could be completed in the next 24-72 hours.
It isn't known whether the Rangers would still receive cash in the deal, along with Manny Ramirez. That apparently will be determined by whether Rodriguez agrees to restructure his contract.
Depending on how much cash is involved, the Red Sox will also send one or two prospects to Texas.
Miguel Tejada's contract (six years, $72 million) essentially ended the Red Sox negotiations with Nomar Garciaparra on an extension, because the Red Sox apparently weren't prepared to pay Garciaparra significantly more than what Tejada got (meaning Garciaparra is still looking for $15 million a year).
So the Red Sox have resumed exploring possible trade destinations for Garciaparra -- with the Dodgers still the most logical destination.

Gammo on right now:
It is very close. Rangers officials were set to leave but huddled w/ Walker's agent on the way to their car. (Put Walker at second, Young at short).
Manny and pitching prospects to Texas for A Rod.
Hinges on how amenable A Rod is to restructure his contract. But since, according to Gammo, A Rod's been driving this train, he'll do what he has to do.
Dodgers and Red Sox know what it will take to ship Nomar to LA. That will happen once the A Rod thing goes down. 24-72 hours is the timeframe. Gammo believes LA will send Boston "one pitcher and prospects." Tejada's signing was the fly in the ointment (As an aside from me, could Balto possibly have driven up Tejada's salary knowing it might get Nomar/Manny out of the AL East?)

Don't get too excited or too despondent (depending on your point of view). There's still plenty of time for the deal to fall apart.
The X factor is the Player's Association ... they could still throw a monkey wrench into the works by making a big stink about ARod restructuring his contract.

I am now convinced that our negotiators havie brillantly been using ARod to get Nomar's agent off the stupid 60 mil 4 year contract. The more they realize that Hicks will give in on the 5 million any minute now they will sign at our figure which is not so bad after looking at Tajeda contract

Manny had average numbers at Fenway prior to coming to the Sox.
What kind of offense the Sox will have can't be predicted, until the Sox find a second baseman and a leftfielder. If they replace Manny and Walker with say an above average leftfielder and second baseman, the Sox may actually end up with an even better lineup for 2004.

IF we get OPerez, please someone explain to me WHY we would NOT keep him??? Young southpaw, w/ alot of potential...PLUS would it not be nice to have 1 LHP in the starting rotation??

would TB do that? i agree, perez would be a nice have, but hes more palatable to TB for those same reasons in getting Huff. In the end, theyd have far less use for a RH closer/starter with questionable makeup (something i dont agree with) than for a Young southpaw w alot of pontential. I could be VERY wrong, but if you want to make sure you trade for a sure thing in LF, a truly great hitter, you get perez and spin him to TB for Huff. After all, were not eactly hurting for pitching.

We are not, TB is though. BHK is 24 [25?] and has a ton of potential himself, and dead nasty stuff. Pitching in TB in front of 2,000 people could do him some good.
I would rather see him go before Williamson or OPerez [assuming he is the P from LA]
