Oh Dave, I feel the same way. It makes it even worse because I'm a girl. In college, nonetheless. My rommates don't understand it. My boss is furious because I'm getting half the work I usually get done (because I'm reading every article across the country on insider). Nobody understands except us. Nobody understands. Most people can't fathom the heartbreak we TRUE fans felt during game 7. Now, I wouldn't go as far saying it has an effect on my sex life, but poor you if it does yours. If this A-Rod trade doesn't happen, my heart will break again!!! huh.gif rslogosmall.gif

His message is delicious in its ambiguity. Think of the situation, here is the owner of a major sports franchise, smack (hopefully) in the middle of negitiating one of the most complex player moves of all time, and here he takes time to drop updates to the fans. We all know he can't comment one way or the other, and with about 15 words he gets hundreds of fools like me to sit here and analyize every word, spanning a whole subthread of interpretations. Whichever way this trade ends up, I am quite impressed by the actions of this current ownership group. Personally I think its a negative comment, given how positive his prior comment was. Can you immagine Jeremy Jacobs and Mike O'Connel being able to handle this type of situation?

It's an astonishing ending isn't it? Astonishing. In fact, it transcends baseball.

I really believe that this is a complex statement with a very simple meaning. The entire process is winding down and the fact that it is going to an 11th hour is astonishing. It trancends baseball in that it is a deal like nothing any of us have ever seen and probably will never see in sports or life again. I'm spent on this whole issue and getting sleep tonight will be very difficult. Let's go JWH, bring A-Rod and Maggs to RSN!
DCBaseball
I agree on JWH's comments. I don't think the deal is done. By all public accounts, whether we believe them or not, this saga is "ending" tomorrow by 5 pm. JWH isn't going to say anything to the contrary -- not even to his butt buddies at SOSH.

I've been such an optimist throughout this whole process. I felt like Theo and the Trio could do nothing to disappoint me. I couldn't sleep last night thinking that A Rod was really coming. I always believe posts on dirt dogs. But I'll tell ya, being a female, who naturally analyzes EVERYTHING - that JH comment does not sound encouraging. Now, I'm not saying it WONT get done. But as of right now, I don't think Henry thinks it will. I think the astonishing part is that he is shocked the union rejected the proposal after it went this far. If his comment was hopeful, it would mean he thought it would definitely get done. How can he think that when it was rejected. He wouldn't opt to send hicks his 5 mil a year, no way. Maybe Hicks really is not compromising. Maybe it will get done, but at the last second. Oh god, I hope I'm wrong!

consider me number three on the bandwagon. i think john henry's statement may have been said to bring up conversations just like this one. may be even to see where sox fans stand on the issue, do they want it or not. we can't jump the gun because of this. we've fantasized about arod and mags all day. haven't you guys read all the espn articles and espn radio chats asking if this is the biggest trade ever? i think he's saying this deal will be the biggest in the history of sports. and like you said, he's sitting back and enjoying the scene as his boston red sox make all the headlines and make the deal of the century.

I know this is slightly offtopic, but since I have nothing better to do while biding my time, I hope you can help me.

I used the word "trepidacious" today, and the lawyer to whom I was speaking said that he had never heard that word and didn't think it was really a word. Is it?

I'll use it in a baseball sentence to keep us on topic:

"The collective hearts of the Red Sox Nation are trepidacious in anticipation of the final resolution of the A-Rod for Manny trade."

Thank you.

Nada. Trepidation is the noun, trepid is the adjective. Trepidacious, if it existed would also be an adjective, so no dice.

As .406 said, it's pretty simple. This is astonishing. He throws in the word "transcend" either a) because he means it, B) to mock Orza's statement about why they rejected Theo and the Trio's proposal, or c) both.

Please, just put it to rest and focus on the actual news. You want to know why Henry and Schilling post on message boards? Because they can carry the weight of the pope with every statement they make.

As a former union lawyer (although it was a lowly clerical union and not the MLBPA), I can tell you this stuff goes on all the time during negotiations. I'm sure we didn't put our best offer on the table before the union and there are hours yet to go.

And, from a semantics standpoint, the word "ending" is less restrictive than "end" or "conclusion". An ending can be an evolving process....

QUOTE(Cambridge @ Dec 17 2003, 07:03 PM)
"Best players who spent their best years in B unis:
#1 Ted Williams
#2 Tris Speaker
#3 Pedro Martinez"

Alluding to an earlier debate in a different forum, it's interesting that Speaker is on this list while Rice has been labeled as vastly overrated.  I'm not saying Rice was better than Speaker - far from it - but Speaker only played 7 full years with us & Rice's 7 best years (even his best "seven consecutive" years) are darn good too.  Speaker had 1862 total bases in his 7, while Rice had 2237 from '77-'83.  The top 3 yearly slugging percentages all belong to Rice, and he had over 200 hits 3 times in those 7 years to Speaker's 1.  I'm very aware that Speaker was a phenomenal defensive player, and there are differences in eras that make the offensive numbers hard to compare (Rice had a huge advantage in HRs, etc).  My point is that Rice ranks right up there with anyone offensively if longevity isn't a factor.

Jim Rice's place on the list of "Boston's Greatest" always puzzles me. It's even more difficult when you try to compare him to a dead ball era guy like Speaker. Rice's power numbers (HR's, SLG%) jump right out and make you want to put him above almost anyone who played before 1920. A second look makes me tend to compare stats that are influenced by things that have changed the least over time and that aren't extremely ballpark dependent. Singles and doubles sort of do that although the dead ball issue still affects the numbers somewhat. I exclude triples because the field dimensions and basepath speed heavily influence them.

Speaker averaged 165 singles and doubles in his seven full seasons in Boston while Rice averaged 137 during his 14 full seasons. Both men averaged fairly similar at bats per season (Speaker = 544 - Rice 570).

Rice has an edge in RBI's per season (101 to 80 for Speaker) while Speaker averaged 99 runs per season to Rice's 87.

Speaker averaged 20 Ks and 38 stolen bases per season .
Rice averaged 98 strikeouts and stole 4 bases per season.

These comparisons do not answer the question about who was the better player but they do cause me to conclude that Speaker was more productive than Rice, relative to their contemporaries.

It's a fun excercise and almost any argument is valid.

If we do the Rustjive-ian substitution method, and bring in some 'phantom math' that I'm famous for, it should actually say...

...

If I didn't know better, I'd break it down like this:
"Transcends baseball": F*cking MLBPA! Restructuring contracts should be allowed if all parties want it. F*cking MLBPA!

"...astonishing...Astonishing.: "Astonished that they rejected us the first time, astonishing that I coughed up the money."

But this is what I'm sticking with, for myself at least: Astonishing that we got him, and I'm still boggled by the enormity of the whole situation. It transcends baseball this trade is so big.

I can't help but think, and this is obviously without having all the info yet - because none of us do - that no matter the outcome, Management did everything right. If they walk away from the deal, you know they have a plan B and weren't about to get screwed in the process. If they can't come to an agreement, it sure wasn't for lack of trying like hell from their end to make it work.

I trust JHW and I really trust Theo. And more than that, I like these guys. That says a lot considering how bad Duquette and Harrington manhandled things, players and fans.

So they've got my trust and I'll gladly hand over the steering wheel because I know they aren't driving us (and the team) off a cliff.

The deal IS done, both sides have already agreed on the terms. MLBPA is rejecting the restructured contract the Red Sox proposed, as soon as there's an argeement betwen JWH, A-Rod, and MLBPA the deal is processed, A-Rod + Magglio are already ours wink.gif

This deal will get done. I'm in the camp that feels things have gone too far for Boston & Texas to go back.

The major question is how will the trade be structured in the end.
MikeyMitch
Maybe JWH is creating a diversion, thereby allowing him to subvert the process and trade Manny for Michael Young, dress him up to look like A-Rod and hope nobody notices, thereby pocketing more than $100M to put into his bondage fetish.

Or maybe, just maybe, the post means nothing.
