Bono Traded
QUOTE
BOSTON -- The Red Sox acquired outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. and cash considerations from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night in exchange for minor league infielder Kenny Perez and minor league right-hander Kyle Bono.

Bono, 22, is 2-2 with a 4.07 ERA in 24 relief appearances for Class-A Wilmington in 2005, his second professional season. An eighth-round draft selection in 2004, Bono is 2-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 28 games (five starts) in his minor league career. He has struck out 73 and allowed only 43 hits in 60 2/3 career innings.

Fair thee well Kyle, it's been a pleasure to track your Red Sox career.

Odds and ends: Reliever Kyle Bono announced his retirement while the JetHawks (DBacks High A affiliate) were in San Jose two week ago. He was replaced by reliever Jonatan Valverde.

Sad news for a kid that had tons of potential coming out of the University of Central Florida as a sophmore less than 2 years ago.

EDIT - Link fixed

that is sad news considering he got a pretty decent size bonus for where he was drafted. he had alot of potential but just couldn't put it all together.

Wait, what? The link didn't work, but why the heck did he retire?

Possibly to go back to school.

The Antelope Valley Press has a blurb from 5/17 but unfortunately the paper only archives a week's worth of stories so it is no longer available.

Well then good luck to him. Glad there's not something wrong with him physically, or family wise.

Exactly, he's about to turn 23, seems to be intelligent and hopefully has a good chunk of his signing bonus left. If he chooses to he could come back in 2 years and make another go at it, 2 years wiser without the wear and tear. Or he could just get a degree and a good job.

Jim Callis of Baseball America notes that the $432,000 bonus the Sox gave University of Central Florida pitcher Kyle Bono was a record for an eighth-round draft choice. Bono, who was a draft-eligible sophomore, went 8-2 with a 1.94 ERA for UCF with five shutouts, and was a Cape Cod League All-Star this summer, pitching 15 2/3 scoreless innings with seven saves for Chatham. Opposing batters hit just .100 (5 for 50) against the 6-foot-3-inch, 205-pounder.

I emailed the Antelope Valley Press and they were kind enough to send me the story.

Short stay

Kyle Bono’s JetHawks career is over. Bono, 22, joined the JetHawks from extended spring training when Chris Kinsey was promoted to Double-A on May 3, but he decided to retire during the team’s recent road trip.

“He just decided that he didn’t want to play the game anymore,” JetHawks manager Brett Butler said. “He came to me and said I don’t have the desire to play anymore. I said ‘The only thing I ask of you is that you think about it.’ He said ‘I’ve thought about it, and I want to go back to school.’

“I said ‘Good luck to you,’ and shook his hand.”

Bono allowed four runs in 1 1/3 innings in his one appearance for the JetHawks. His pro career began in 2004 after he was drafted in the eighth round out of Central Florida University by Boston. Bono was traded to the Diamondbacks last year as part of a deal for former JetHawk Jose Cruz Jr. and pitched in six games for Lancaster last season.

Jonathan Valverde replaced Bono on the roster and made his JetHawks debut Tuesday night.
