Full Version: Arroyo. Music vs pitching?

His big performance last night was a SUCCESS .. Is any of concentration in music currently affecting his pitching? Will it affect his performance tonight. I hope not. But I wonder.
chrisgeleven
Why would it effect it? It was an off-day and an extra day of rest compared to what he normally gets waiting for his turn int he rotation.

2 days ago, he was on WEEI being interviewed about his CD. He said he had recorded his album during the offseason and hadn't really touched music (outside of what he has done in the past, like playing the guitar in the clubhouse) since spring training. He said that the only time he would spend on promoting the album would be during the all-star break.

He clearly has made sure his music doesn't interfere with baseball.
fenwayfaithful
Is this a worthwhile conversation to even be having at this point?

If he totally completely Rolando Arrojos it up tonight, tomorrow you can talk. If he's fine tonight, this conversation is moot and the speculation pointless.

He's been steady and really above and beyond anything you could want in a 5th starter this year where we are Pedroless and Schillingless.

Yeah, maybe Arroyo needs to spend more time working on his damn pitching than making an album and throwing concerts. His pitching last night was s**t.
mikee293
let's do some analysis here....

1) Arroyo promoted his album recently
2) Last night he pitched poorly
3) Most of the time Arroyo is not promoting his album
4) Most of the time Arroyo pitches well

This is conclusive, irrefutable PROOF that it totally effected his performance out there. banghead.gif

Can you imagine the outrage in Boston if Lowe, Pedro, Manny or Damon did this last year? The media would have been in a tizzy!

I don't know how I feel either way. I'd rather him have not done his concert before his game, but if management was concerned, they could have given someone else the start to open the 2nd half up, or told him no concerts while they were in season.

I think it's complete crap that a player would release a record of cover songs mid season. The guy works (hopefully) 7 months a year. Do it over the winter. The FO should be more on top of this, and while there at it, tell him if he is gonna release a record... write some songs! wink.gif

There's no way to know whether the previous night's happenings had any effect on how Arroyo pitched last night, but he's setting himself up for criticism for doing what he did. Inevitably, anything less than a 5 star performance by BA would be blamed on the concert, and sure enough, that's what happened.

By all accounts, he turned in relatively early, and needless to say, he stayed sober. At least I think so.

Reminds me of the Saturday game at NY last year (mid-September) that everybody thought would be rained out, and Lowe -- the scheduled starter -- apparently spent all Friday night boozing it up in NYC. Ultimately, the rain passed, the game was played, and Lowe got absolutely shelled.

In that case, Lowe was definitely at fault. Here, I wouldn't fault BA quite that much, except inasmuch as he's spending too much time in general worrying about his music.

Arroyo pitched well to righties. I'm sure the hot stove thing didn't affect that. These guys operate on little sleep all season.

His CD is pretty good. Great alternative rendition of Muddy Water with Youks, DiNardo and Damon chatting on the track between choruses.

I agree about him not being adversely affected by getting less than a full night's sleep. Hell, Wells threw a perfect game while hungover and half-drunk, and Doc Ellis threw a no-no while on an acid trip. Maybe Arroyo needs to start getting drunk before games.

I haven't heard the CD, but I've seen clips on NESN, and he seems to be pretty good. I just wish he'd stop with the Stone Temple Pilots covers.

I think it is total BS that this guy is playing "rock star" during the season. He has several months in the winter, and his entire post baseball life to pretend he is Scott Weiland. Don't get me wrong, I know the guy is talented and all but let's face it, his baseball salary and publicity from it more than likely bankrolled his CD and singing career.

I realize that if he pitched well last night nobody would think twice about it, but the reality is that he got his ass handed to him by the MFY's.
Tek123
I have news for you Foulkelore.....pitching a CD is far more benign than what I've heard these guys are up to on a regular night. They are not going to sleep early with a glass of cocoa and their loving spouses tucked in safely beside them.

I understand your point, but I am sure his cd has consumed alot more of his focus than just strolling to the local pub for a few pops after a game. I just think it would be more professional to restrict this kind of thing to the off season.

But of course I'm sure he was thinking album sales would be better smack dab in the middle of the season...

We're all aware that this was scheduled well in advance? Tickets went on sale a few weeks ago. The post-ASB rotation was expected to have Clement go first, but he ended up an All Star. Bronson was scheduled for something on an off night (it could have been an autograph session!!!), and then pitched the next night, when his manager scheduled him. I make plans around my work schedule. My opinion? BFD.

I consider last night to be an example of Arroyo continuing a trend of subpar performance at home and even more so against lefties.

The splits courtesy of ESPN.com

Split AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS BAA OBP SLG OPS
vs. L 281 82 20 2 12 34 17 6 33 0 0 .292 .344 .505 .850
vs. R 167 34 9 1 2 16 9 3 32 1 0 .204 .256 .305 .561
Home 230 66 16 2 8 28 18 3 30 0 0 .287 .347 .478 .825
Away 218 50 13 1 6 22 8 6 35 1 0 .229 .274 .381 .654

At home against one of the best hitting clubs in the league, featuring several potent lefties (Giambi, Matsui, et al.) I wouldn't be surprised with a poor performance based on those stats this year.

And I do echo Tek123 sentiments. Professional athletes do tend to indulge in various activities that can keep them up and occupied well into the wee hours of the morning. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be overly exhausted from a little singing and guitar playing.

BTW, I picked up his CD and he does have a pretty good voice. I got it on sale too - only like 12 bucks.

Actually, it was reported he said he would only promote it over the All-Star break, which he did. It's not like Theo can be mad at him for the promotion as he was playing at the event.

did it ever occur to you that he only got the record deal offered to him this past off-season because of the WS win....he recorded it in Jan., which last check, WAS the off-season
and since when is 4ER getting your ass handed to you by the Yankees? They are a tough team. He got taken out in a tie and after an error that took the game to a tie. I also didn't see the run support Wells got the following night and today.

Bronson's CD Drop Party & Concert was Weds., the Hot Stove Concert was Sat. - that affected Wake's pitching and it's Dirty Water, but Muddy Waters was a great musician wink.gif

Would you like to disclose the nature of your capacity with the Arroyo organization? You seem to protesting a bit too much. smile.gif

you guys are driving me nuts that you even started a thread on this, let alone half of it is wrong and doesn't make any sense.

Theo Epstein was NOT at Bronson's CD Drop Party and Concert on Wednesday.
Bronson Arroyo WAS at Theo's Hot Stove Concert on Saturday along with Tim Wakefield...um, the night before HIS poor start --- so why don't you guys start a thread on that?!
Arroyo DID record this album in the off-season. He has managers, publicists, assistants and record co. people that do all the work - he just showed up and played. He did not even stay for his own VIP after party.
I agree with the person that wrote that there is a helluvalot of other stuff going on in ballplayer's lives than playing guitar for an hour or two. AND that team won the World Series!

if you check my past posts as I am a LONG time member here, I protest against anything that is misleading, a lie or an undeserved slight on anyone --- whether it be a player, the front office or even a poster here that is being attacked....since these are my first lengthy posts after being away a long while after being killed here for disagreeing with some mean posters and subsequent harassing PMs, you should probably wait before you judge who I am or what type of person I am...
