Edgar gets a write up this morning.

ON BASEBALL: Kevin Thomas "In the pen, he's been a loyal Dog"
Its a write up on Connor Brooks, but reviews the existing Seadogs bull pen which includes Martinez.

QUOTE
The two new guys from Class A are Randy Beam and Edgar Martinez. Beam, 23, an 18th-round pick in the 2004 draft, is an effective lefty. Coming into this weekend, he had made six straight scoreless appearances. He is also Brooks' new roommate.

Martinez, 23, is the most interesting case. The Red Sox signed him out of Venezuela as a 16-year-old catcher. He reached Double-A last year but Martinez never batted well. Last July, the Red Sox told him they were going to make him a pitcher. He was not happy.

"They tell me and I say 'no.' I say I think I want to go home," Martinez said. "I talk to my agent and my parents, and they say to stay here, you never know. And I'm here again (in Double-A) in only one year. It's unbelievable.

"I like it (pitching) so much. I'm excited when I'm on the mound. I feel good and I feel strong."

Martinez is strong with a mid-90s fastball. He is working on his change-up and slider.

Edgar appears to be smoking the batters in AA with his fast ball. Would another plus pitch make him ready for AAA?

Thanks to Anni for the reference in the minor league news links. (She is indomitable in her coverage. )

WakefieldKnucklehead
After Beam got roughed up in the eighth, Martinez got the final 2 outs of the inning with 2 fly outs (the first was a sac fly).

Remember, this is only Edgar's first 6 innings of work at AA, but the man is off to an excellent start. His WHIP is 0.85!!

My man Edgar had a rougher day than usual, but he still gets credit for his 6th hold.
It looks like they were going to try and let him finish out the 7th for his first save, but he ran into a bit of trouble with a balk and a wild pitch in the 7th.
So much for the perfect ERA, (but that was just illusory anyway. Had to break that cherry sooner or later.)

I would really like to see this guy pitch sometime.

I have not updated Edgar's stats in a couple weeks. He has pitched 3 times since 8/17 with varying degrees of success. Curious as to whether Craig Hansen is affecting Edgar's playing time. Not seeing it yet.

8/20 - vs NH, gets his 8th hold. He inherited a runner in scoring position with 2 outs and he did not score.
8/21 - vs NH, pitches 1.1 innings in this marathon game, and allows a run to keep the marathon going.
8/24 - vs Trenton, pitches 1.2 innings and runs into his first blown save. With only one out, he inherited 2 runners who both scored.

Portland, Maine - At the Yard magazine has selected Portland Sea Dogs pitcher Edgar Martinez as the 2005 recipient of its annual "Diamond in the Rough" award. The award is presented each year to an outstanding player who has enjoyed a breakout season. The recipient of the "Diamond in the Rough" award is a minor league player who has risen from obscurity to prospect status in his breakout year.

SoxProspect, the guy who runs SoxProspects.com on ezBoard, figures that this is Edgar's final contract year.

Its very likely the Red Sox will bring him back, but he will be a minor league free agent with some chips to bargain with. Its likely he will ask for a spot on the 40 man roster. Assuming that works out, would be good to postpone his signing out past the Rule V draft so that the sox can protect at least one other guy instead of him.

Will be interesting to see what comes of that.

Just a blurb from Rotoworld regarding Martinez in the VWL.

QUOTE
Edgar Martinez pitched two perfect innings yesterday and has allowed one hit in four scoreless innings in the VWL.
Martinez was added to Boston's 40-man roster last month after amassing a 1.89 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings between Single-A Wilmington and Double-A Porland last season. He might spend time in the team's pen during the second half of next season.

Excellent and thanks!

Looks like he is playing for Pastora in the VWL.

I looked up the stats sheet, and the column header abbreviations are different as they are Spanish abbreviations. But if I am deciphering them right, it looks like he has played in 4 games, 4 innings pitched, and 1 hit, 2 Ks, and no walks. I am assuming it did not include this game, but still have not figured that out.

In the VWL for Pastora E Mart has gone 1-1 with a 4.58 and 14 K's, he also has 4 walks. I would give more but I have never taken spanish and trying to figure out what the website has said is hurting my brain. I knew I should've taken spanish instead of french. Here's the link if anyone wants it.

I have figured out the Pastora is low on the totem pole in their division but thats pretty much it. When I have more patience i'll try to figure it all out.

E-Mart has been unhittable so far this year for Portland.

In 7.2 IP, he hasn't allowed a run, has given up only 4 hits and has struck out 13 without walking a batter.

If he keeps this up he won't be there for much longer.

Edgar Martinez, the closer not the DH, IS looking awesome.

He does seem to be dominating AA, I wonder when they will move him to AAA...

They might opt to be very conservative with him though, seeing as how inexperienced he is.

Rotoworld gave him some love this morning:
QUOTE
Edgar Martinez pitched a perfect ninth to earn his second save for Double-A Portland on Tuesday.
Both runs Martinez has allowed have been unearned, and he's posted a 13/0 K/BB ratio while giving four hits in 7 2/3 innings. He could make his major league debut at some point during the second half, and it's possible that he'll be a key member of the Boston pen beginning in 2007. Apr. 19 - 2:10 pm et

We have so many promising young relievers... how do we decide which one closes and which works the 9th? the 8th or the 7th?

I got to see E-Mart the other night in Portland. He was 90-94, but the hitters looked overpowered by just about every fastball, leading me to believe the gun might have been a little slow. His slider has good late break and he had a couple guys chasing sliders in the dirt. It seems like he hasn't totally given up on hitting though, he spent the first seven or so innings taking swings down by the picnic area at Hadlock whenever he got bored.

He is deffinetly a beast on the mound though.

I don't know but it is a good problem to have

Portland closer Edgar Martinez might be nearing a promotion to Pawtucket. The former catcher has pitched 8 scoreless innings in his past five outings and has limited Eastern League opponents to a .136 average.

Righthanded reliever Edgar Martinez should be close to earning a promotion. In 16 games at Double A Portland, the converted catcher is 1-0 with a 1.14 ERA, 24 strikeouts, and 5 walks in 23 2/3 innings. Martinez, who has been pitching only since the summer of 2004, could appear in the Sox pen by season's end.

E-Mart had one of those nights last night. He faced 5 batters and gave up 5 hits, including a HR, and all 5 runners scored. That's not good for your ERA.

For the season: 25.2 IP, 3.51 ERA, 20 hits, 5 BBs, 25 Ks, 4 HRs

E-Mart has had a handful of shaky outings after a dominating first 6 weeks of the season. But overall, he's putting up a solid year in AA.

I would be curious to find out what other goals he needs to achieve before being allowed to advance to the next level. Apparently they set up a game plan with each of the prospects at the beginning of the season.

Righthanded reliever Edgar Martinez received a glowing review from World team pitching coach Ferguson Jenkins at the Futures Game during the All-Star break. Jenkins said, ``It won't be long before this kid is helping someone's major league bullpen. He's not a kid you want to rush up to face." In eight July appearances, Martinez has limited opponents to a .184 average and has a 1.93 ERA in those games. Since June 21, he's 1-0 with one save and a 1.89 ERA.
