White Sox top Yankees 2-1 in 10 inningsNEW YORK --Juan Uribe slid in under catcher Jorge Posada's tag to score a disputed run in the 10th inning, lifting the Chicago White Sox over the New York Yankees 2-1 Wednesday.
...
Uribe struck out in his first three times up, then tripled with one out in the 10th against Mariano Rivera (5-3), who was working his second inning.
The Yankees drew in their infield, and Scott Podsednik hit a grounder to second baseman Robinson Cano.
Cano threw home and Posada tried to block the plate, but Uribe sneaked in under the catcher's shin guard. Posada stuck out his glove, trying to win the call from plate umpire Bruce Froemming, Rivera pointed to the plate and Yankees manager Joe Torre briefly argued.

MOJO** - Cameo Day 4
Ladies and Gentlemen: Mr. Burt Bacharach!

Sometimes, you need to take mojo down a notch. Sometimes it's best to play smoothly instead of intensely. Lately it seems like the Sox have been too jumpy for their own good, making errors and having mental blocks that screw up what should be routine plays (Clement forgetting to cover home comes to mind). So it's time to sit back and relax and enjoy one of the more natural, fluid cameos: Burt Bacharach from Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. It was a guest spot so smooth and perfect, he returned for the sequel with Elvis Costello.
So sit back, relax, and let the Red Sox croon their way to another win when their own front man Bronson Arroyo takes the mound.

Of the Red Sox players in tonight's lineup, the one who's posted the lowest batting average and slugging percentage with Boston this year is Kevin Millar. He's hitting sixth--not ninth, not eighth, but sixth. I don't get it.
Joe Brinkman is calling balls and strikes. He tends to allow few hits--only a .259 batting average in his games--but he also allows few walks, allowing only a .317 OBP in games he's called. Texas' power hitters become more important in such a game.
This would be a very good night for Kevin Millar to regain his power stroke--we'll need right-handed power tonight.

"What the Sox Need Now"
Music by Burt Bacharach/Hal Davis
Lyrics by Pine Tar Helmet
What the Sox needs now is glove, sweet glove
It's the only thing on this team that there's just too little of
What the Sox needs now is glove, sweet glove
No not just for some but for everyone
Lord we don't need more offense
There are guys like Manny and Papi
Enough to supply
There are scrappers like Graffy and Rent
With enough pop to blast
'Till the end of time
What the Sox needs now is glove, sweet glove
It's the only thing on this team that there's just too little of
What the Sox needs now is glove, sweet glove
No not just for some but for everyone
Lord we don't need another pitcher
There are Clement and Bronson
Enough to throw
There are Schilling, Timlin, and Chadford
To eat up innings at a time
Oh listen Lord if you want to know
What the Sox need now is glove, sweet glove
It's the only thing on this team that there's just too little of
What the Sox need now is glove, sweet glove
No not just for some oh but just for everyone, everyone
What the Sox needs now is glove, sweet glove

You don't put your players in a batting order based on how well they are batting, you have to take into consideration other variables. Just becuse Kevin Millar is batting 6th doesn't mean it is wrong. The lineup is set up like this.
L
R

That way a LHP cannot dominate a particular spot of the order.

This would seem like more a valid complaint for the past two months in general than for tonight, when he's hitting .500 (though with nothing but singles to show for it) with a .539 OBP in his last 3 games, and has come close enough to hitting a few home runs in the past week that if this were horseshoes none of us would be complaining.
Translation: This is about as close to being hot as Kevin Millar has come since mid-June. Why not ride that horse as far as he'll take you? Figuratively, only, of course.
Plus, Bill Mueller seems to thrive hitting at the bottom of the order (and he gives Johnny Damon someone to drive in). No such benefit from Millar at the bottom of the order (in fact, if you look at his splits, hitting in the #6 spot is about the only place in the lineup where you can sort of, kind of almost justify Millar's existence this year - .290/ .790 OPS).

Kevin Millar '05

I'm not arguing for Millar to bat in that particular spot, I'm saying that a abtting order is constrcuted based on batting stances and speed, not just raw power or average.
And a OBP almost .100 above a batting average is very good.

Fair enough, and I agree that there are reasons other than the quick glance at his BA/ OPS why Millar might not necessarily be a better fit at the bottom of the order than in the middle 1/3 (see: previous post on the other side of the fence).
I was only disputing that Millar as a righty does anything to offset the effects of a lefty (this season, anyway).
