Game time: 7:05 pm

Scheduled starters: Seth McClung (5-7, 6.40) v. Matt Clement (11-3, 4.35)

The game will be on NESN.

Boston weather: 3 pm observation at BOS: 3,000 feet scattered, 3,900 broken, 8,000 broken, towering cumulus, visibility 10 miles, temperature 80F, DP 69F, wind out of the south southeast at 18 mph, gusts to 25 mph.

Forecast: Breaks in the overcast since morning have allowed enough heating to develop thunderstorms in the area this afternoon. There have been a few level 2 cells in the Wilmington area already and BOS is reporting towering cumulus.

Chance of showers and thunderstorms through the evening, with gusty winds out of the south. The winds should taper off after sundown.

South wind blows across from right to left, slightly out to left. Think yesterday afternoon.

**MOJO** - Jungle Day 2
Jungle mojo roars on with the natural enemy of the Devil Ray and King of the Jungle: the stately Lion.

user posted image

The Red Sox will need to draw upon the Lion's strengths:

1) Ferocious Appetite

user posted image

Lions are hungry, and so too must be the Red Sox. There will be plenty of time to sun yourself on the veldt after the game is over, but until then the hunt is on, and Seth McClung is the prey. Just think of him as a tasty zebra.

2) Cowardice

user posted image

Wait... that's not right.....

2) Fiery Youth

user posted image

Yes, they are cuddly and adorable, but even a young lion cub is nothing to be trifled with. Much like Jason Varitek! The lesson here: attack early, and put the game away before Tampa Bay even knows what happened.

3) Musical Ability

user posted image

OK, it sounds silly, but this may be the most important of the three. Music is for our pitchers today. Musical ability is timing, tempo, rhythm and key. So pick the right pitches, establish your own rhythm and dictate the tempo of the game yourself, don't let the hitters ever find their timing. Conduct your game well, and this game can be a symphony.
PineTarHelmet
Tonight I call upon our own King of the Jungle, Jason Varitek to lead the way. May the clubhouse applesauce satisfy his appetite, may his courage and leadership shine through at least tonight. And may he have the right timing for when he swings the bat or when he calls for a pitch. Tis all I ask. Oh yeah, and it'd be nice if you could homer or something, Tek. So yeah, I call upon Tek to have a good game and to lead us to victory!
Wilhemus Remmerswaal
I hereby offer this Haiku-jinx to Mr. McClung:

"You've won 3 of 4
But have yet to pitch in Fens
Now, taste Wally's wrath"

It's raining in Boston right now, and there are a few more showers firing up to the north and west, but it doesn't look like this will cancel the game. If you're going, bring a Hefty bag!

Crawford vs. Clement rematch: advantage Matt.

I like leadoff homers. biggrin.gif

Here's Johnny!

I guess Damon got in Papi's comfort zone for the team HR lead smile.gif
DutchRSfan
In 4 games so far today, 5 first inning homers:

Damon and Ortiz
Payton for the A's
Young and Pena for the Tigers.

ivebeentruped
I love it when opposing hitters do that.

But Clement is having his customary control issues.
ivebeentruped
This delay won't last long
DutchRSfan
I'm going to bed anyway smile.gif, it's 1:35 in the morning here. Washing @ Atlanta was supposed to be on AFN Radio but that one's ppd, hope they have another game on I can fall asleep to.

Rain delay.
rominer
Wow. Nice play. That was really impressive.

Mueller saves Clement. Let's get this thing back started asap so Clement won't have too long to sit around. However, Clement might give up 6 runs in one inning...he needs to just settle down a little bit.
balla45
In other news, the Tigers and Indians have combined to score 11 runs in the first inning. Wow...not a good day for those starters.

Man, Carlos Pena is on a tear....he just hit his 10th home run of the season, but since being called up he's been on fire.
theo's hometown
clement was also on against the white sox during that delay, will he ever get to finish a game??
yankeehater
I wonder how the new grass will hold up under wet conditions.

That was, like, hours ago. My "great play" was referring to...I don't know...something the grounds crew did or something. For lack of anything else to comment on.

In the meantime, if the rain delay wants to hang on for about half an hour more, that might almost allow me to get home in time to catch the rest of the game. Broken AC at work, 97 degrees, there will be no "working late" for this lazy employee today.

Just watched the Wells Press Conference. That f'n rocked.

That should be a weekly feature on NESN "This Week In Baseball With David Wells" and just have the media ask him about the recent goings ons in baseball.

Weeeeee!

Yeah, but then Wells would become very poor, getting fined up the wazoo by the comish.
Curll
Yeah, but think of the marketing oppertunities. He could drink a coke or a beer (label out) and munch on some tasty ____ while it's going on. He'd make the money back in no time.
ivebeentruped
So...assuming we start playing again, can Clement go back out there? He's thrown 26 pitches, and as we saw, he was struggling with his control in that 2nd.

Although, the other choice would be Jeremi Gonzalez. Pick your poison.
ivebeentruped
More idle chatter...

Watching the Cubs game on ESPN, Nomar is starting at 3rd base today. blink.gif Recall that a main reason why the Sox traded Nomar was that he was fairly unhappy, partly a result of the fact that he would have been traded (to the White Sox most likely) if the A-Rod/Manny deal went down.

NOT that I would change anything about 04...

I think he should go back out there. It is not like he threw a real lot of pitches. I don't think we should go to the pen this early. Will this game ever start back up though? It looked like it was pouring pretty bad.

The Wells press conference was great TV.

This game WILL start up again. Take a look at the radar.
Zenit2k9
I feel bad for Clement - this has the potential to screw up another chance to get his 12th win.

My guess is we see a fair amount of J-Go and Papelbon when this starts up again.
ivebeentruped
I'm just thinking out loud here...

If one of Papelbon/Alvarez/Gonzalez pitches ~3-4 innings tonight, that wouldn't preclude him from pitching on Friday (in Wells' spot)?
Ralpho316
i am sorry if this has been asked 10000 times, but I am in CT right now is the game gonna go on tonight or is the rain just pouring?

Have no idea, but the game is starting now.

I have to say, it looked like Corcoran was getting very squeezed in that AB to Tek, especially the 1-2 pitch.
FenwayFanatic
Damn. Could have opened it up big there. Lets hope Clement does alright after that big wait
ivebeentruped
If it's clear that Clement has been affected by the layoff, Tito should be willing to yank him.

After only 30 pitches, he could theoretically start Friday's game anyway (one would assume).

Edit: Nevermind. whistle.gif

And I'm sure Varitek is thinking "Damn that good drainage!"

I'm a little behind...rewound the TiVo to see the game highlights. But from where I sat in that last inning, the first pitch Clement threw to each of the two batters looked like a strike, but both batters showed bunt then pulled back and the pitch was called a ball.

Lazy umpiring? Or time for me to get new contacts?

I don't remember the exact pitches, but neither team is getting the low strike.

Crawford off with the pitch, ball hit to right field, Renteria and Cora fake the DP, and Trot doubles Crawford off first.
