The Sox recalled Kevin Youkilis after last night's game with the Ottawa Lynx, and will be with the team tonight. The move makes him eligible for the post-season roster.

David Borges, Pawtucket Times: Youkilis returns to Boston tonight; BOSTON --- Kevin Youkilis will be recalled from Pawtucket today after Manny Delcarmen made his slated one-game return to the Boston bullpen last night.

Calling up Youkilis makes him postseason-eligible. Players must be on a team's active roster by Aug. 31 in order to be eligible for the postseason roster, unless they replace an injured player (pitcher for pitcher, or position player for position player). Adam Stern is the only position player currently on the DL.

Chris Snow, Globe: Moves help team prepare to get locked in

Today is the last day of August, a vital date, because anyone on the Red Sox' 25-man roster (and disabled list) at the end of the day is eligible for the postseason roster.

That explains the roster shuffling over the last 24 hours. The club optioned Abe Alvarez to Pawtucket before last night's game and recalled Manny Delcarmen, though Delcarmen was expected to be shuttling back to Rhode Island following the game.

The reason? The club intends to call up infielder Kevin Youkilis today to ensure his postseason eligibility. If the club were to wait another day to summon Youkilis, the only way he could be added to the postseason roster would be as a replacement for someone on the 25-man roster who is injured at season's end

Hang on. The playoff roster is limited to the active roster (+DL) as of EoD on Aug 31st? That's a lot more restrictive than I thought it was. Doh. embarassed.gif

See, the Red Sox know the rules, and they figured out how to get around them. It just leaves them a little short in the pen tonight, but there's nothing new about that. Not getting Delcarmen back for 10 days isn't great, but Harville should be here soon, and there'll be others from the minors to fill in. And they have the DL replacement spot for Mantei and perhaps Miller to use for Harville, Delcarmen, Hansen, or whoever they wind up wanting to put on the post season roster.

Sorry, just wanted to add, it's a good thing last night's game didn't go extras, though.

Hopefully Wake will come through tonight with a good outing, or, failing that, Gonzalez or Papelbon can contribute. They should now be reasonably well rested. This is not such a horrible day to have a small pen, especially with roster expansion tomorrow, although it does suck that Delcarmen now has to wait 10 days before he comes back.

That can't be right. That means that only 28 players are eligible this year (25 man + Miller + Mantei + Stern unless I'm forgetting something) for the postseason.

Last year, I can't think of anyone who was on the DL as the postseason started (I could be wrong), but 26 guys played in the postseason (remember Youkilis vs. Ramiro Mendoza?)

Let's look at this phrasing: "Players must be on a team's active roster by Aug. 31" in order to be eligible. I think that the key word is "by," meaning that they don't have to actually be on the roster on the date of Aug 31, just until then. But, Youkilis has been on the big team many, many, many times this year, so this move would not be necessary.

Color me confused, and in need of some explanation from a credible source.

I don't think tonight's game gets played, IMO. The remnants of Katrina (still a fairly powerful storm) will be in the area.

According to weather.com, "...THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AND LOCALIZED FLASH FLOODING THIS AFTERNOON AND INTO THE EVENING..." in many counties in Massachusetts, including Suffolk. Looks like scattered showers, but those scattered showers would be very severe and could be enough to postpone the game.

That would most likely be a good thing, assuming the game is called without any pitches thrown; a day's rest would be great for the bullpen. I imagine the game would be played as part of a doubleheader tomorrow, so it wouldn't screw up the pitching rotation (Wakefield could start on 3 days' rest), and tomorrow=September 1, so we'd have a bit more help in the pen.

So, assuming Tito is aware of the weather situation, the callup of Youkilis makes sense, since it might not affect a single game.
RedSoxAnni
The key to whether the severe weather develops is how much heating we get during the day. There were some breaks in the overcast earlier, but we've got an overcast layer with bases at around 2,500 feet right now, and temperatures are in the low 70's. If the sun does break through, the temperature could climb into the 80's, and create enough heating to cause real instability. The winds at 3,000 feet are at 44 knots out of the southwest right now, and winds are over 50 knots as you go higher. This can contribute to severe weather in an unstable atmosphere. Right now, there's no signs of that happening, at least not where I am, less than 5 miles from Fenway Park. But the afternoon is still young...

I think they'll try to play the game, unless we end up with training thunderstorms and get inundated like they did in New Bedford yesterday, where they got five+ inches of rain.

hmm, after sept 1st, do you still have to wait the 10 days?

Youkilis, McCarty, Bellhorn, Pokey, and Dinardo all could have been on the DL around that time, although I don't remember exactly who was. And there must have been an injury replacement spot for Williamson. By the way, it's nice to know that they consider making Youkilis post season eligible important.

Potential does not equal certainty. And they'd better play, seeing I have tix for tonight and no flexibility to make a return trip tomorrow for a DH... enraged.gif

Now then, selfishness aside... blush.gif

Wakefield and his ability to eat innings means we don't have to lean on the BP as much as we would with some other starter. I don't know who's available, but I think the sum of Wakes+potent bats at home+crummy D-Rays pitching=easy night for the Sox.

Without massive amounts of rain, of course. blush.gif

If the game doesn't get played tonight, will that affect who pitches for Wells on Friday?

I'd like to see DiNardo get a crack at a start. If they play a double-header tomorrow, the likelihood that they'll end up using Gonzalez for relief is pretty high, I woudl think. Which would keep him from starting on Friday.

The Providence Journal seems to think DiNardo is a probable start anyway.

Wow, what a terrific move. Bring up an offensive player even though we're scoring about 10 runs a game, and send down a relief pitcher, which is the biggest weakness on the team.

Unless after Sept. 1st you don't have to wait 10 days or some other loophole or something, then this is an idiotic move.
blumj
I think that Harville and Papelbon can cover whatever Delcarmen could have done for the next 10 days. And there's room as of tomorrow to add whatever mop up guys they want, so none of the current relievers will have to work any garbage time innings anymore. I want the ability to use Youkilis in the playoffs more than I want Delcarmen for the next 10 days.

Is Harville even here yet? If he is, what would the corresponding move be?

Oh, and the alert from weather.com has changed:

"...STRONG DAMAGING WIND GUSTS BETWEEN 45 AND 55 MPH ARE POSSIBLE WITH ANY STRONG SHOWER OR THUNDERSTORM LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING..."

That forecast alone might be enough to call the game, in the interest of the safety of fans.

Wait, there's more:
"WINDS JUST OFF THE GROUND WERE VERY STRONG LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND THIS WILL CONTINUE INTO THE EVENING. THEREFORE...ANY SHOWER THAT DEVELOPS WILL BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING STRONG DAMAGING STRAIGHT LINE WIND GUSTS.

THE BEST CHANCE FOR SEVERE WEATHER LOOKS TO OCCUR THROUGH 11 PM THIS EVENING."

Family stuff! Get your butt over here, you hear! Hope it's nothing serious. Sounds like this guy can deal:

Epstein on Harville, who has a 1.17 ERA in his last 13 appearances: ''He brings velocity to the table, mid 90s, a hard slider that will be a good pitch for him at times.

Agreed. But he is arriving tommorow, according to Epstien... Hopefully the Family Issues was just something like preparing the family to move (maybe he has a small child or something), hopefully not an illness or emergency...

Hopefully, the family issues were the Red Sox not wanting to activate him before Sept. 1 so they could get Youkilis eligible for the playoff roster, and not any real issues.

Soxfan they did it so Youk can be on the playoff roster. Delcarmen or Alvarez can be on the roster via the Mantei slot.

That makes no sence. They could put Youk on the post season roster via the Mantie slot also.
HangingCurve
It was stupid to send a pitcher down for Youk. Schilling and Wells may not hold up. Foulke got hammered at Lowell last night. The Sox have been winning without decent pitching for most of the year. The post-season is about pitching. I don't know why Petagine stayed up. It doesn't matter about Olerud's health. Is Petagine that much better at 1B than Millar or even Ortiz?

I just can't figure this move out.

On the other hand, I understand why Houston let Harville go now. They must have known about his family situation and that he would not be around to be eligible for the post-season.

Perhaps the Sox should have had him on the roster today...is that kosher, having someone on the 25 man roster that has never dressed in the uniform?

His family problems wouldn't be a problem for the postseason roster. As long as they didn't DFA him, he would still be post season eligable.

They can only replace Mantei with another pitcher.

Making Youkilis eligible for the playoff roster was the sole reason for the move. I think they can live without Delcarmen for a week (I believe the 10-day rule is in effect until the end of the minor league season, which should be this weekend).

Besides, they'll have several arms to choose from starting tomorrow.

That's correct. As long as the player is in the organization by 8/31, he can be an injury replacement for an eligible player.

It's really the only way that it makes sense at all. They were down to 10 pitchers tonight for the first time all season. It had to be for Youkilis' post-season eligibility, and not because they thought they needed Youkilis tonight more than a pitcher.

They'll get some help in the pen tomorrow, and Delcarmen will be back soon.

Agreed. I feel bad for the guy, too. Seems like he's always getting called up then sent right back down, but this time, he's missing out because of injury.

I have a feeling he could have contributed over the remaining few weeks, if given the chance.
SoxFan24
So what happens with the extra postseason roster. It has to be a position player, and with the versatility that Machado has, I wouldn't be suprised if he got it.
