Game time: 7:05 pm

Scheduled starters: Casey Fossum (8-10, 4.76) v. Tim Wakefield (13-10, 4.35)

The game will be on NESN

Boston Weather: 4 pm observation at BOS: 2,200 feet broken, 3,000 overcast, visibility 10 miles with light rain, temperature 79F, DP 74F, wind out of the southwest at 21 mph, gusts to 28 mph.

Forecast: There's a high probability of showers and thundershowers throughout the late afternoon and evening. We just had a light shower go through the Boston area, but there was no lightning. The cloud cover remained over most of the area this afternoon, which kept heating and instability to a minimum. The surface winds have diminished in the last couple of hours, but the winds at 3,000 and 6,000 feet are approaching 50 mph. That, along with heating and instability, can set up a scenario where severe storms can develop.

I think they will try to play unless we get some convective activity developing in the area in the next few hours.

Bring two trash bags. One to sit on and one to wear.

The blue sky poking through the clouds is not good news because that could provide enough heating and instability to fire off some of those thunderstorms. Right now, there's no vertical development, so that's "good news".

They better play tonight. Why? Because I got this in an IM from my wife earlier:

My Wife: Hey...

My Wife:  Know what I am in the mood to do?
Me: This ought to be good smile.gif
My Wife:  Watch The Notebook again.
My Wife: Want to maybe stay in and watch The Notebook tonight?
Me: Maybe.  I kinda wanted to watch the Sox though.
My Wife:  Are they going to play tonight?
Me: Yeah, they played the last two nights, right?

For the love of God, I need the Sox to play tonight.

**MOJO** - Jungle Day 4
Jungle mojo clamps its jaws into another game with the natural enemy to the Devil Ray: the crocodile.

user posted image

Crikey! If the Red Sox wish to make it 4 and a row, they'll need to draw upon the three great strengths of the crocodile.

1) Patience

user posted image

Boy, that sure is a quiet log floating there and.. OH LORDY! The crocodile is able to spend great amounts of time luring in prey before striking, waiting for the perfect time to strike. With Casey Fossum on the mound, the Red Sox hitters will need to work the count and wait for the right pitch to drive. For when the crocodile does strike, it will relentlessly attack. Just like the crocodile, the Red Sox will need to chase Casey Fossum right out of the game... maybe even all the way home.

user posted image

2) Bite Strength

user posted image

The crocodile has a tremendous bite force, and when it has its jaws on something it doesn't want to give up, chances are you won't be seeing it again. The Red Sox will want to snap on this game early, getting the quick lead and then locking it up (you lock it up). It will then be up to the bullpen to clamp down and secure the win.

3) Cold Blooded

user posted image

Crocodiles are "cold-blooded". To get warm they lie in the sun. To cool down, they lie in the shade with their mouths wide open or laze in the water. To control their body temperature, crocodiles control the blood flow inside their bodies. They can 'shut down' blood flow or speed it up. It will be up to the Red Sox to control their own blood flow, to calm a beating heart when hearing the Fenway Faithful cheer them on, and to let the ice flow throw their veins when it gets late in the game.

And once again, a picture of a baby. After all, despite their scaly skin and fierce sharp teeth, baby crocs can still be very cute. Just like Kevin Millar!

Thanks for being a good sport Kevin.

Looies would like to include a special Jungle Mojo for tonight’s starter, Tim Wakefield.

Morphos butterflies are found throughout the jungles of Central and South America. Beautiful and entrancing, a Morphos butterfly in flight demands an observer’s attention. For all of its brilliance, however, the Morphos is a master of disguise, as its mottled brown underwings help camoflauge the buttefly as it deftly alights on a branch.

So too will Wakes’ flutterballs dance with the Fenway breezes, riveting the attention of hapless D-Ray batters, only to disappear into the sheltering protection of Mirabelli’s deft glove.

Today, in light of the Crocodile Mojo, I call upon Bill Mueller to take us over the top. He doesn't look very fierce upon first glance, and he probably isn't that cold blooded, but inside lies a fierce enemy whose giant bite can make up for his little bark. His patience in big situations rewards him in most situations. May he use these Crocodile qualities tonight and rock the opposition with his fierce glove and hot bat.

And if he ends up not playing...then may it be Youks. dunno.gif:

The radar doesn't give us much useful information; the risk is for thunderstorms to develop around us, not for it to move in from somewhere else.

There's no shower activity in the area, but there's been some heating in the last couple hours, so there's still the potential for thunderstorms to develop. If they do develop, they could be severe. There will also be a cold front moving into the northwest sections of the area later this evening, and that could set off some showers.

Right now the wind at BOS is out of the south at 22 mph with gusts to 30 mph. If that continues, the wind will be blowing from right to left, and slightly out toward left.

Keep the ball down, Tim!

I imagine a wind like that could really take a hold of a knuckleball. That could be good or bad (control issues or very good movement)

One thing is sure though. I am so glad that I am not Doug Mirabelli.

So did you guys hear about this one-hitter from Lowe? Un-fricking-believable. Talk about streaky.
MiracleOfO2704
Can we call that a wind-driven HR? Not good start.
scotian1
That wind is not a good thing for Wakfield tonight, he must keep the ball down or we could be in for a long night.

Crap ...

Where's everyone saying this game is over, we're done and we look lifeless?

From what I understand, it's a double-edged sword actually. On the one hand, yes, balls up will not take much extra to fly deep. OTOH, the friction apparently affects the ball much more, and is especially more helpful than a strong wind blowing in.

Anyone good at physics can fill in the gaps, I'm sure.
scotian1
Anyway a good recovery by Wakefield to retire the next three. Hopefully our guys can get some up into that jetstream that is blowing out to left.
MiracleOfO2704
Ummmmm, tad early for a warning perhaps?
kiransdad
What the HELL was that??? I'm sick of punk Piniella but Fossum does hit a lot of folks. Not happy about our star (yes, STAR) shortstop getting hit hard on the knee.
scotian1
What is with that? Was it deliberate?

They issued a warning again?

Like, the umps think that teams want to intentionally put runners on base for Ortiz and Manny?

I'm only on GameCast today, so I have no idea sad.gif
terpsnsox
I'm really getting sick and tired of the Devil Rays. Not sure that one was intentional, but on replay, Kazmir's certainly looked like it. Piniella is a loudmouth SOB and I really can not stand him, and I think he really has it out for our guys.
scotian1
Unfortunately the wind did not help Manny! Damn.
adamf11
Manny... wow. He could have caught that if he ran hard and/or dove for the ball.
blumj
So, the umps warn both teams? How many D-Rays have to lean into knuckleballs to get Wake kicked out?
scotian1
No more fastballs Tim.
Jskot311
nice heads up edgah
MiracleOfO2704
So, does Edgah still suck folks?
BostonSox37
If I were Arroyo, I would drill someone in the top of the 1st. Why give them a chance to strike first?

They have hit batters in the first inning two nights in a row, both with fastballs. Very slim chance that it was accidental.
scotian1
Nice play Edgar, poor running for the Devil Rays!
MiracleOfO2704
That 5-4-3 was PERDY!

Good DP, now lets get those bats working!

No, but he is slightly overpaid.

I really like Edgar personally, I think Sox fans expect him to be Nomar c. 1999, which is unfair to him.

I guess all Millar needs to hit homers in Fenway is a 20 mph wind out to left.
