**MOJO** - Time Travel Day 1

Curt Schilling will step on the mound in Yankee Stadium today for the first time since the now famous "Bloody Sock Game": Game 6 of the 2004 ALCS. Schilling pitched a gutsy game to keep the Sox's hopes alive, a performance that overshadows even his own tremendous World Series start on the same hobbled ankle against a terrific St. Louis line up. It is this image of Curt Schilling, standing triumphant on the mound pitching his game that Sox fans love to remember. And remember they have to, because they haven't seen it since that run last October.

user posted image

Now, don't take this overwraught introduction for ungratefulness. For what he did to bring home the trophy last year, Curt Schilling could come to my house and tell me he wanted to punch me in the eye for fun, and I would do nothing but remind him to use his non-pitching hand and brace for impact. And I'd be happy to do it. But that doesn't mean I don't want to see the Curt of old on the mound facing the Yankees today.

So with a little inspiration from Mr. Peabody and his Wayback Machine (the one that time travels, not a robot that spells improperly and picks fights with Bob Lobel), Time Traveling Mojo has arrived. And I figure as long as I'm going back to relive October, I might as well pick up some mojo from throughout history while I'm out. And today, we have mojo straight from the Roaring 20s!

user posted image

And wouldn't you know, there is plenty of mojo to be found in the 1920s to assist the Red Sox against their heated rivals.

To help balls to make the trip from Red Sox bats to out of the park, we have Lucky Lindy ready to lend a hand:

user posted image

Nothing like a non-stop flight from home plate to the cheap seats. And Johnny Damon would be interested to know that were he to go back to the 1920s himself, he could be submitted into evidence in one of the most famous trials in American history. The "Scopes Monkey Trial".

user posted image

Of course, it remains to be seen if he would be evidence for the prosecution or the defense. After all, is he the missing link or the son of God?

With today's game being played in Yankee Stadium, you are sure to hear plenty of noise from the drunken fans in the crowd today. Of course, the 1920s did have a solution for those rambunctious individuals.

user posted image

That's right, a little prohibition mojo will take the wind right out of the sails of a hostile New York crowd.

Of course, we could use a little mojo for those of us stuck watching at home or listening on the radio. Well, not to fear, for both the first public radio station and the first television were invented in the 1920s! Oh, what an age they lived in!

So enjoy 1920s mojo all day today. Listen to Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong (I'm a fan of "Jelly Roll" Morton, myself). Watch some Charlie Chaplin films. Go out and sign up for a dance marathon. You could even dress up like a flapper for the occasion. Or maybe entertain yourself with a good old fashioned pole sitting. Bonus points for you if that pole is flying a Red Sox World Series Championship banner.

One of my favorite 20's figures, perhaps his spirit could help us today.

General "Black" Jack Pershing:

Don't forget the Algonquin Round Table, which reached its apex in the 20s. They met in New York City but were disdainful of it and everything around them. As they sliced through the hypocrisy of society in their time, so will the Red Sox slash through the pomposity of the Yankees.

I'd like to add - for mojo purposes - silent film star Harold Lloyd who was the silver screen's representation of the go-go, can-do spirit of the Roaring '20s.
Not as huggable, lovable as Chaplin's Little Tramp, nor sad-eyed, puppy-face adorable at Keaton, Lloyd is nonetheless considered "the third genius" of the era by film historian Kevin Brownlaw.

His characters specialized in rushing headlong into danger, regardless of the odds, and emerging more often than not unscathed. (So what if in real life he lost two fingers on one hand due to a stunt gone wrong? The show must go on, baby!)

His prime adversary, more often than not, was the urban landscape, typically The City That Never Sleeps And Never Fails To Brag About It.

His titles set the stage for the remainder of the weekend in the Bronx:
"Speedy," "Why Worry?," "Welcome Danger" and "Feet First" and most famously "Safety Last," in which he scales the outside of a building from street level, encountering new challenges and pitfalls every step of the way only to emerge triumpant.

Not unlike the Red Sox season, so far.

Here he is with some two-bit actor named Babe something on the set of "Speedy."

Curt needs to come up HUGE for us today. Nothing like the chance to shut up 50,000 New Yorkers, again.

Crazy lineups today.

No JD, Kapler in center batting 9th, Graffi leading off, Olerud at 1B.

For the bad guys: No Sheff, no Posada, Flaherty behind the plate.
Tomclash
Thank God it's a new day.

It's time for somebody to step up.

cortisone shot in shoulder-
RedSoxAnni
And Posada is out because he's got "whiplash" after a little collision he was in last night.
h0nus
Gotta love the crowd go OHHHHHH on the 1-2 pitch to Ortiz that's called for a ball. It was over a foot off the plate
rogerpl
Manny looks lost like early in the year. Here's to hoping he finds it today.
rogerpl
bingo!!!
ivebeentruped
THERE'S MANNY!!
czar
Manny being Manny...
rogerpl
Why pitch him inside- thanks Chacon
Caspir
Nice hit Manny. WTF, I start Posada today and he sits, but sit him last night and he has a great game. Dick.
BusbyReds
I was just going to post about how off-balance Manny looks right now. Heh.
h0nus
It's time for the pipe dream of Chacon and Small as the Yankee's #1 and #2 starters to come to an end.
ivebeentruped
Awesome 31 pitch inning.
adamf11
31 pitches for Chacon, lets get him outa there and into the bullpen!
Bergs
I'm surprised Sveum didn't hold Manny at 3rd.

Manny looked closer to the plate, good. One of the announcers (McRetard?) said Papa Jack was trying to get him to move up in the box. That would be closer to the pitcher. I think he got it wrong, he definitely looked closer to the plate.
MTSUDaff
How good did Manny's hit look? I mean I know it was a HR, but was it a pop fly that carried over the short porch in right, or was it a no-doubter? No TV thanks to FOX today for me.

Line drive over monument park into the Sox pen. No-doubter.

Careful, Curt.
OrlandoCabrera
WOW! What a ****ing catch by Schilling.
BusbyReds
Holy shit! Don't ever do that again, Curt!
czar
What a play.

Though I could do without the bare hand of course... wink.gif

8 pitch 1st for the big guy.

Nice.
adamf11
WE NO NEED NO STINKIN GLOVE!
Curll
This has a good feeling about it.

It was a no-doubter absolutely crushed to left.
Zenit2k9
I can't believe he just fcuking did that.

Nails.

Would Renteria have been able to get him if Schill let that go?
adamf11
I am optimistic, but I know at any time Curt can get tired and runs will come in bunches, I am hoping he gets his quality start today.

Nice start Curtissimo. Essentially all fastballs. His motion looks good, like he's pushing off the back foot well. Also, his motion looks quicker, i.e., not so deliberate. Of course, it's only one inning!
rogerpl
Chacon at 50 pitches-
adamf11
Rent has hit 2 screaming liners right at outfielders. He has to get a hit eventually.

Also this is a big inning for Curt to see what he has today.
ivebeentruped
Nice inning.
Zenit2k9
His fastball's around 92. Not his best, but it's working.
