I called this out in the news thread, but not sure that was the right forum. From SnowGlobe's Red Sox notes.

The Sox yesterday made all of the rookies dress in drag before departing the clubhouse for the flight to Tampa. Local kid Manny Delcarmen had the best -- or worst -- costume of the bunch. Delcarmen was decked out in a black-and-teal Witchy La Bouf costume, complete with hat, bustier, tutu, and fishnet hose. ''My mom is going to love this," he said.

My initial (knee-jerk) reaction to this is one of dismay. The words/actions coming out of the Patriots locker room yesterday after a horrible loss & what came out of the Red Sox locker room yesterday after a horrible loss couldn't be on further ends of the spectrum.
The Patriots conduct rookie hazings too (e.g. shaving heads) but they conduct that type of business BEFORE the start of the season. The Sox committing such pranks in the midst of a pennant race, when it's not yet clear that they will even make the play-offs, and immediately following a disastrous loss (e.g. Youk hurt, offensive continues to struggle & Clement stinking it up 3 in a row, etc) is an inappropriate time. According the the Hearald (http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=103242), this occured 45 minutes after the game. Also telling: 'team publicist Glen Geffner chased television cameramen away...' which tells me the Sox may have suspected this would be bad PR.
I acknowledge that it's hard to judge from the outside looking in as I'm not a member of their clubhouse but as outsider & as a fan, I feel this looks bad.

As far as I'm concerned I like this. It shows that they are still very loose and aren't letting the pressure get to them.
I think it's fair to say that they know exactly what they need to do in order to make the playoffs and I'm sure no one in that entire locker room has lost focus of that.

Remember, that NFL doesn't have 'rookie callups' during the season. While MBL has spring training, 9/1 is a traditional callup time for MLB prospects, so in that sense, hazing is part of the MLB initiation. No biggie, and hope the boys are loose and ready for TB.

Exactly. If Delcarmen headed out to the bullpen right before the game in that sort of costume, it would be a bit problematic. These guys are just trying to have a little bit of fun.
I wonder if A-Rod was ever hazed like this in 1994, or if the Yankees do funny things like this.

Let's also not forget that a regular season loss is a much bigger deal in the NFL than MLB. The best baseball teams still lose over fifty games in a season. One NFL loss is the equivalent of a ten-game losing streak in baseball.

Exactly, the NFL is a sprint and MLB is a marathon. I don't see any problems with this as it's all harmless fun. It doesn't hinder or negatively impact anyone's performance.
By the way, the teams usually do this hazing before travelling to Toronto (in order to force the rookies to go through customs that way). They've also done this just about every year (I think they had Youkilis dressed in a hooters waitress outfit last year).

I thought it was great when I heard the Red Sox did the "rookie hazing" thing. It shows they are loose, and the pressure isn't getting to them. This kind of rookie thing goes on all the time. Someone asked if the Yankees do the same thing to their rookies, and I think they do. I remember seeing a photo of Hideki Matsui dressed like a pimp during his hazing, and it was hysterical. I also remember when the Mets did it to Jeff Kent and he got all pissed off and alienated almost everyone on the team (what a surprise).
I also file this episode under "no big deal".
Glad to see the Red Sox keeping it loose.

I'm in the "What's the big deal??" camp as well. This has been going on in the MLB in September for years. As far as the Matsui in drag and Youk in drag as a Hooter's Girl referenced above, I don't know whick was more frightening. With Matsui, though, it did somehow make sense...

You're thinking of Indians pitcher Kyle Denney:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?i...TC-DT9705204233People who have problems with this kind of hazing are being absurd. I remember in my freshman year of high school, we carried the water and medical equipment everywhere...that was our hazing for the most part. Nowadays, they have banned that practice, as if it is somehow harmful. Extreme hazing is a major problem, but those kind of minor things...how is there anything wrong with that? There isn't.

Yeah, I noticed that, too, and pointed it out to my daughter - it was her first Fenway game. I first noticed this sort of thing at a Phillies/Braves game in Philly this summer. Some rookie for the Braves (I can't keep track of them all) was dragging a pink Barbie "rollie" back-pack out to the bullpen. Apparently, this is something that the bullpen rookie is required to do for most teams. Except at that game, the poor pitcher had to drag the bag out after everyone else was in the pen. He was featured on the Jumbotron dragging this Barbie bag, and the Philly phans got quite a laugh. It contains a supply of candy, gum and the like for the relievers during the game.
I don't remember for sure, but I think I saw another reliever bringing the bag back to the dugout on Saturday after the game.

Sep 19 2005, 03:17 PM
Almost all MLB teams usually have rookie relievers carry out pink flowery rollie bags and the like to the dugout. I know Papelbon and Delcarmen did(pics are around...dunno where) I've seen it on other teams too.
And no I'm not talking of Doug Mirabelli and his rollie bag
