The five players Rangers will scout this spring includes just one pitcher, right-hander Jose Valdez. The others: outfielder Rudy Guillen, shortstop Joaquin Arias, second baseman Robinson Cano and outfielder Bronson Sardinha.

So it won't be Contreras. Another brilliant deal by John Hart.

Does anybody know anyhting about these guys? Anybody the MFYs might miss? Is there a Jeff Bagwell in the bunch?

It never could have been Conteras what are you talking about? The PTBN was always a minore leaguer, and it was only one of a group selected by the MFY. Navarro would've been nice, but he wasn't included. What would make you think a player to be named would just be any player on the team? Wouldn't they just take Mussina or Vasquez if that was true? Use your head my friend, it's ALWAYS a minor leaguer, and it's usually off a selected list.

Baseball America's Top 10 Prospects list for the Yankees includes:

Guillen (OF - age 20) at #3.
Arias (SS - age 19) at #4.
Cano (2B - age 20) at #6.
Sardinha (3B - age 20) at #10.

Valdez didn't make the top-10 cut. He's 21 years old and pitched in A-ball last year. Scouting information I found called him both "high-ceiling" and "inconsistent".

There were early reports that it was Contreras. Espn news ran with it for a few hours on Saturday. It was before the PTBNL was added to the deal, before the deal was hammered out.

i saw robinson cano at the Futures All Star game this past year and he was pretty good...only 20...scouting reports have to compared him to soriano and shortly after the all star game he was promoted to AA...

my guess is Valdez since the Rangers have only had 1 great pitcher come through their system in 10 years and they waved him...and he turned out to be Barry Zito... ohmy.gif I wonder how long it will take for them to decide they need as much pitching as possible.

What on God's green earth are you talking about? Zito was Oakland's 1st round pick in June of 1999. I guess you were speaking metaphorically, but for the life of me I can't figure out who you mean. blink.gif
