Red Sox chat transcript -- the Globe's Gordon Edes, Oct. 26, 2005

Excerpts:

I can't tell you much more than what was in the paper, seeing how I just got up a bit ago, but I can tell you that the Sox are not prepared to do whatever it takes to keep Theo, or it would have been done by now. As things stand this a.m., they have not done the things Theo wants done to remain as GM, and we'll know in the next 24 to 48 hours how this winds up, whether he stays or goes

...

Lucchino is clearly exceptional, but the environment is such, judging by the Epstein negotiations, that people want to be paid to put up with some of the stuff they put up with.

...

I would think, just as with the failed A-Rod negotiations, that Henry gets involved shortly. He and Epstein are very fond of each other, and i think JWH would be deeply hurt if Theo doesn't stay. That's why, in the end, you have to think this thing gets done

Although I admire Theo as a bright and very intelligent person, one can not give him 100% credit for 2004. The core of that club was built by someone whom Lucchino couldn't wait to blow away, Dan Duquette.

Go ahead tell me if the Sox would have had the same success without those whom Duquette traded and dealt for. No way.

If Theo really wants to prove his full worth, then let him go to a Pittsburgh or Kansas City and see what he would have to do with 1/10th the budget he has with the Red Sox.

From the right field pavilion at Braves Field,
Sid
