LinkCongrats, Cap'n. Too bad about the CI GG though...

I'm not sure he's the best defensive catcher in the AL, but he's damned close if not. This is a recognition, I think, for the defensive stalwart he's been for many years for the Sox. No one prepares better than Tek, and his pitchers have nothing but accolades to heap on him.
Congrats, Tek.

He deserves it for taking care of the pitching staff and being a wall behind home plate(except when he catches Wakefield).
Congrats

Congrats to Tek but like CI, he was not the most worthy candidate. IRod and AJP had better all around #'s.

He doesn't even come close to deserving it.
When your backup catcher is more adept at throwing out baserunners (even though he's catching a knuckleballer with something resembling a butterfly net), you aren't deserving of being in the running for any defensive award. For all his "preparation" and "game calling" praise, he caught the worst pitching staff in the majors and his defense didn't help the cause. If I'm voting, I'm giving it to Pudge...or Toby Hall.

Not a bad year for the Captain! Both a Silver Slugger and a Gold Glove in the same season. Teixeira was the only other AL player to do that this year.

I would have given in to Pierzynski, he did a great job with the CWS staff...but congrats to Tek anyways...he worked his ass off all year long. Nice work, captain.

Wow. Tek is the first Gold Glove winner from the Red Sox since 1991.
Since Dewey won his final gold glove in 1985, 180 Gold Gloves have been awarded in the American League. Boston players have now captured a total of 4 Gold Gloves:
1990: Boddicker and Burks
1991: Tony Pena
2005: Jason Varitek

In a way, this award, while a happy thing, kind of pours salt on some of the recent wounds, as follows...
The last time I felt this badly about the Sawx, Burleson, Lynn and Fisk were being lost in the winter of '80.
All three were Gold-Glove types at their positions.
In 1981, all three performed elsewhere. Losing Theo kind of resembles that horrid feeling of '81, where a strike added to the general lousiness.

congrats, captain. deserved, glad to see someone besides pudge win it. gold gloves are won by the same people every year, it gets boring, glad to see one of our own, ( my favorite player at that) win one.

Happy for Tek, but anyone who thinks he was better defensively than Molina is out of their mind....same for Jeter getting gold glove over O-C.

I thought Joe Mauer was the best I'd seen in years behind the plate this year, when I saw him. He's first in defensive win shares in the AL as well, fwiw.

Agreed. If I had a vote for this sort of thing, mine would've gone to Mauer and Peralta. Such is the nature of the GG award. Seems like the GG is almost an offense award. If you hit and your team wins, then you get hype. If you get hype, they give you a GG.
My favorite was the year Palmeiro won and he was a DH. That was classic.
Congrats to Tek anyway. He has been one of my favorite players and deserves some public accolade.

I was really hoping Papi would win his first GG at 1B this year. Guess I'll have to wait 'til next year.

Clearly Tek won the GG due to his exceptional handling of the pitching staff

Hard to believe.
I wouldn't say Tek's
undeserving, but arguments (strong ones) can be made for several other catchers.
I'm guessing that little "C" on his jersey had something to do with this...

The Gold Glove voters are usually a year behind...
It's a weird trend.
Last year Tek was MUCH better.

It isn't so much that they're a year behind as much as they vote based on conventional wisdom reputation rather than performance. Sometimes this reputation merely lags performance by a few years. Sometimes the reputation is undeserved. Oh well.

Manny had the most outfield assists for an AL LF. Why didn't he win?

Can't say that with a straight face.

Oh.. give it time. All you need to do is start 28 games and have a fielding percentage only slightly worse than your competition... that and a name... you're golden... ask Raffy!

PS.. as for GG's I agree with JtB, Mauer was probably the best defensively. However, I also think I-Rod or Molina certainly deserved a GG more than Varitek.
Moreover, both Peralta and Uribe deserved it more than Jeter so this isn't an anti-Sox rant!

I definitely agree with you Jamie, as Peralta and Uribe deserved the Gold Glove over Jeter. However, I don't lose any sleep over these awards, as they are really only a glorified popularity contest.
