September 21 selections from Bill Nowlin's Day by Day with the Boston Red Sox
1999: Pedro Martinez struck out 12 Blue Jays, reaching 300 strikeouts for the season and topping Roger Clemens' team record of 291.
1985: Wade Boggs got hits number 222 and 223, tying and breaking Tris Speakers' team record for hits in one season.
1922: "He only appeared in one major league game, but it was a day to forget. Cleveland pitcher Doc Hamann entered the game in the ninth inning with his team down 9-5. He walked the first two Red Sox batters, hit the next batter, and then walked in a run. A triple by Red Sox centerfielder Elmer Miller drove in three more. Hamann took a deep breath, then gave up a single, a wild pitch, and another single. After failing to get out even one batter and being charged with six earned runs, Hamann was sent packing. His career ERA is infinity."
