QUOTE(Cambridge @ May 1 2006, 09:27 AM)

May 1:

1979: "...Leaving a club record 18 men left on base in nine innings, in Oakland...the Sox lost 7-5. The Sox left the bases loaded in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and ninth."
...

I totally remember this game. I was listening to it on WSPR-1280-Springfield, the old Ken Coleman days, and I broke the inside panel of my bedroom door by throwing a hairbrush at it when the Sox failed to score in the ninth.

There are 20 events featured in Day by Day for May 1, but based on our recent struggles hitting with men on base I thought this was good one to list. I don't remember the game, but it sounds damn painful.

We also re-signed Rich Gedman on this date in 1987.

Hey now, Jeff Stone did hit the walkoff single in the 9th inning against the Blue Jays, with only 6 games left in the season, to put the Red Sox into first place in 1990. The Red Sox went on to win the division on the last day of the season, meaning that every single win was crucial, especially against the Blue Jays. It was a small part, but Jeff Stone was the hero of that game.
