Red Sox author and historian Bill Nowlin has a new book out, Day by Day with the Boston Red Sox, which catalogues over 6,500 notable events, transactions, and birthdates in team history. This thread will periodically highlight entries from the book, or whatever anyone wants to share for a specific date (perhaps from your own experieces as a fan).

For today's date, March 14, the book has five events, four birthdays, and one death.

One notable event on this date came in 1911:

"Red Sox minor league catcher Pinch Thomas was out sightseeing in San Francisco. A little after midnight, he was set upon by a 'crowd of thugs and beaten into insensibility.' It was thought he would lose the sight of one eye and confined to bed for a long time. In fact, he made his major league debut with the Red Sox on April 12 and played for 10 seasons in the big leagues."

He was a great Red Sox pitcher, for a few years, and had Mickey Mantle's number more than anyone else.

By coincidence, the Red Sox and Tigers played each other to close that season, and the matter was discussed prior to the three-game series. As the team winning the series would finish with a better record, it was decided no make-up game would be played -- in a sense the teams were treating it like a best of three playoff. Detroit won the first two to clinch, and we won the meaningless final game.
