Its happened folks. We have had our first Julian Tavarez incident as well as our first Devil Rays brawl:

Fists Fly in Florida

Well, at least Brian Daubach finally has been avenged...

EDIT: wording
CTLovesTheSox
Well we knew he was over emotional and slightly crazy, but he didn't even make it out of Spring Training before he had a melt down.
Cambridge
R-E-L-E-A-S-E is a word that comes to mind.
Stickey
Well he spiked him so Julian decided he didn't approve to he FREAKING punched him IN THE FACE! This guy is way out there. WAY out there! And hte worst part is is have absolutley NO problem with it. He tries to cut yo so you punch him. Cool.
alskor
Hey, maybe we should change our name to "The Boston Guys Who Take Spring Training Way Too Seriously"

At least this is spicing up the end of Spring Training... Any word on when the Enrique Wilson cut/Manny Freak-out is coming? biggrin.gif
mascho
Hmmm..

I know I didn't, so who had March 27th in the pool? Someone must have.

How about "M-E-N-T-A-L I-N-S-T-I-T-U-T-I-O-N" or "D-E-P-O-R-T-A-T-I-O-N"
rogerpl
I like the passion and it will help the team define itself. Nothing like a brawl to bring a team together.
On the other hand hopefully Tavarez isn't just insane. PLAY BALL!

Please tell me there is video of this out there.

Wow talk about a physco". I'm telling you guys he will be are little
basket case this year emotionaly and even worse then Manny".

The Brawlin' Boston Red Sox.

Just an idea for Fenway: Install some turnbuckles and ring posts. I want to see Hee Seop Choi give Matsui a flying elbow drop.

I'm gonna check out the 6pm Sportscenter, hopefully they'll have some footage.
Ellis Greenwell
Thank God Mark Bellhorn's not with the team anymore. Tavarez'd have already given him a Colombian neck-tie.

I love it. Players with passion. Release? Maybe he had a release when he punched him. We want to release guys who play with passion and are ready to throw down? Maybe we can replace them with some candy asses!
JAB2004Sox
Ohhh Man, can MLB order him to get some therapy? Although I like his passion he's out of control.
redsoxfaithful76
I don't think Taverez has the right passion we are looking for though".
Don't get me wrong i hate candy asses as much as the next guy but..
Passion to play the game the RIGHT way and play the game without
making it a rugby match would be nice".

I hope there is a tape of it because if indeed the play came in as "spikes high" then he has every right to do what he did.
Curll
Oh, please. Stop with this "He's out of control!" stuff. I'd rather have Julian tossin' haymakers at Devil Rays than Tek throwing down with Manny in the clubhouse (cough cough).

If he gets hurt, he goes on the DL/Suspended, we bring up Hansen or MDC. Whoopity do. I'd rather have a loose cannon than a dead arm in the bullpen (Halama says, "Hello, boys")

Also, any way we can integrate more WWF theatrics into real sports is wonderful. I want to see Johnny Damon being interviewed by Eric Frede and Coco Crisp runs in and starts yelling, "You know what, brutha! You're nothing but a punk! I'm going to humble you in front of all these people. I'll hit the ball so hard, you'll fall down, then I'll run out there and **** your ass. Make you humble before all 36,000 fans, God, Jesus, and Theo Epstien!!!"

And I suppose you condone guys charging the mound every time a pitch is high and tight?

I can't wait until the national media starts with the "Red Sox are a Bunch of Brawling Miscreants" byline! Maybe they should have hugged and made a play date to play soft toss, instead.

No sir, I don't condone that. I do condone however striking out when somebody tries to take a man's livelihood away from him. If he did come in spikes up, that is dangerous.

No one would condone that, however if it is apparent that someone intentionally threw at your head no one is going to blame you for charging the mound. As a catcher, you could have come at me with a lowered shoulder to my face, your hands in a fist to my nose, or a forearm to the chest--all of that is cool and I wouldn't have thought twice about it. There is one unwritten rule and you do not come sliding home with your spikes up. I would have been pissed if someone tried to spike me and that's with all the protective gear. I cannot blame Tavarez for swinging if he was spiked intentionally.

First, maybe I'm alone on this, but I think candy asses taste much better than regular asses.

Second - I've seen those two pictures. And from what I can tall, Tavarez actually just gesturing, like, "Oh, darn. A run scored." In fact, I can read lips, and I'm pretty sure that the difference in facial expression from picture #1 to picture #2 is definitive evidence that "darn" was the exact word he used.

Meanwhile, as he was gesturing, Gathright's face got in the way.

I don't know that anyone is really to blame here. Can you fault a guy for saying "Oh, darn" after giving up a run? On the other hand, can you fault a guy for not seeing the gesture coming?

Frankly, I wish Tavarez had a little bit more passion. This is the Major Leagues. You don't need to say "darn." You can say "damn." You can even say "sh*t"or "f**k" -- and without the ***! Big leagues, baby. Big leagues. Come on, Julian, get in the game.

That's what I say.
CTLovesTheSox
Rominer, thank you for the new sig line.

Between Beckett and Tavarez in the past 24 hours, we're definitely looking at some intense situations during this season. I wonder how many games Tavarez is gonna get for this incident.
Malzone64
One problem I see with a loose cannon like Tavarez, if that's what he is, is his teammates are "supposed" to back him up when he goes off. So, someday both benches empty, brawl ensues, and someone you didn't want to get injured, does.

Thats what Gabe Kapler, Seanez, and Jungle Jim Luscotov are for.

This is great. Now this season when Manny or Papi gets drilled in the head by Kazmir over a God damned spring training game brawl between two nobodies (Gathright and Tavarez) we can take solcae in the fact that our pitchers don't take shit from last place teams. You people who think this shows fire or anything positive need your head's examined.

Heh heh, I'm trying. I'll admit my first response to "Taverez clocked Gathright" was, "Damn, I gotta see this." But when you think about it, the Drays have nothing to lose, and Kazmir is not afraid to go high and tight. We've seen how Manny and Papi react to a pitch that comes within ten feet of their heads, so it could cost us suspensions later in the season when it is no damage to TB to lose a guy for a week, but could be the difference between playoffs and staying home for us.

Well Caspir, if the Sox had a comfortable lead in mid to late September, is there anything you'd rather see than the MLB turned WWE spectacle of Gabe "Mr. Universe" Kapler, Rudy "Muay Thai" Seanez, and Julian "The Psycho" Tavarez charging the field? I think it could be the one and only time in known baseball history when a cage match was used to determine the victor of the game.

Yeah, fighting never inspires a team.

Nice call, Caspir.

Tavarez is six shades of crazy. I had hoped that he would keep his composure in Boston because he has a knack for not allowing inherited runners to score (*cough* Timlin *cough*), but geez... The guy needs to be wheeled out to the mound on a dolly w/ one of those Hannibal Lecter masks on. Hopefully he'll get the maximum punishment.
Harry Bobbin Manass
What a guy! What passion! He flipped his lid and sucker punched a guy because he was getting lit up.

QUOTE
A frame by frame examination of photographs taken of the play, however, show Tavarez stepping on Gathright's left arm after the play and possibly was saying something to the Devil Rays player.

Gathright placed his hand on Tavarez's left knee and attempted to push it away, at which point Tavarez cocked his right fist. Gathright was still on one knee when Tavarez threw a roundhouse right, catching Gathright in the area of his chin and knocking his batting helmet off. Tavarez can then be seen pulling back his arm and throwing another punch, which appeared to glance off Gathright's shoulder.

You really are the biggest idiot on these forums. Yea, fights with the Devil Rays sure will jack up our team. Hey, it worked that one time with the Yankees oldrolleyes.gif Real men sucker punch 120 pound string beans while they're on their knees. You really are a dolt. I said the risk of injury and suspension is more important than fighting the last place Devil Rays. But you're just a stupid jack ass, so talking to you is pointless.

No one can defend that. He is stomping on his arm for no reason, then when he tries to push it off of him he punches a guy who is on his knees. Real tough guy.

Here's his post game comments by the way.

The post interview

Reporter: Julian what happened that made you throw the punch, why were you angry?

Tavarez: I wasn't angry. I just saw his reaction you know. A reaction you try to get out of the ground like, so I aint mad. I saw hes moving like hes coming up and you know, i throw a punch

Reporter: Did he kick you?

Tavarez: No, you know everyone want to talk with me and that was it. I'm fine, nobody got hurt

Reporter: Do you regret throwing the punch

Tavarez: I wish I dont have to, im not here to fight (inaudible) not a big deal

Reporter: Do you have any concerns there may be some disciplinary actions from baseball

Tavarez: I dont know whats going to happen. In baseball they make decision theres nothing you can do about it. I hope nothing happens

I don't think this is a huge deal - Tavarez is crazy whats new? If Kazmir goes after Papi or Manny then thats his decision to make but he better be prepared to deal with an ass beating from either one of those guys. Kazmir is tiny and would get broken like a twig.
