Frede annoyed the piss out of me when he started, but he totally grew on me and I find myself missing him. Maybe this chick will get better, but she seems - well, I dunno - just not right for the job. However, Kudos to NESN for trying to get more women in these jobs - just this isn't the right one.
When NESN first busted out Eric Frede, I was all, "Where the hell is Tom Caron?"
Which, as it turned out, was crazy talk. Frede was
much better, which was obvious after a week or two.
I doubt Tina is going to turn out to be an upgrade over Eric Frede - so, "more women in these jobs" or not, this looks to be a downgrade on NESN's part. But it is only three games in. I'm sure she will improve.
I
hope she will improve -- I'm taking a wait-and-see, but my wife HATES her. It's been hard enough spending the offseason convincing Mrs. Rominer that "Coco Crisp" is not just a practical joke being played on Red Sox Nation. I don't need anything else working against me.
The problem - and this is an obstacle for a lot of women in the business, I'm sure - is that Tina Cervasio pretty much looks like the token woman on every sports broadcast around the country. She's attractive enough that you don't have to look away (the female equivalent of Don Orsillo does not exist in sports media), but far enough from "hot" to imply to viewers that they take her more seriously. She doesn't seem sports-dumb, but she doesn't seem sports-smart, either. Her job is to lob softballs, and make sports more accessible to women simply by showing a female presence on screen.
All of which is fine and good, but I think unneccessary in the world of Red Sox baseball. The Sox are not lacking for female fans of any generation, so far as I can tell. I'd rather get the best possible product than worry about finding something for every demographic.
But I'm not calling for Tina Cervasio's head. I'm sure she'll settle in. Hopefully with a little less "perky" and a little more "I've watched baseball even before 2006." My only real problem? Looks like we
plucked her out of NYC. She's from
New Jersey. I'd rather NESN stay local. I just hope she didn't grow up as a $%!#@*! Yankees fan.
