Sorry, I couldn't resist getting some insta-feedback on the subject!

The Cubs have gone longer without the championship, but this cannot possibly compare to the tragedy of the Sox coming so close to victory so many times and choking.

The history of the Cubs is one of futility.

Its the eternal question- "is it better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved to begin with?"

Id say weve had it rougher. The length of time on both is now long enough that it doesnt matter- for both its outlived almost everybody. Its a matter of detailed, specific pain-- we win.

mad.gif This is definately a tough one, but I have to agree that it is worse to have and lost then to never have loved at all. mad.gif

It doesn't matter, it's becoming "trendy" to be a Red Sox & Cubs fan, does anybody else notice this?

both teams will have their curses broken long before the Giants ever win a world series

Geez I hope so. Sabean really dropped the ball this ofseason IMO. Michael Tucker? No trades? No signings? Losing out on Maddux? That Giants team is WEAK this year, especially if Schmidt has mingering effects after the surgery. ITll be interesting.

it's not Sabean's fault, cheap ass MacGowan made him cut payroll.
Still, we'll win the division as easily as last year, for a few reasons:
1. We're almost as good as last year. I'd rather have Tucker/ Hammonds than Jose "Can't hit a fastball for s**t" Cruz, and while Perez is a huge downgrade over Aurilia, it's made up for Pierzynski replacing Santiago.
The pitching is better as well. TOmko will pitch better for us than Moss or Ponson did, Nen's coming back, so that makes up for the losses of Nathan and Worrell, and Jerome Williams will be on the team the entire season, which is better than having Kurt Ainsworth for the first two months. And after the way Jensen/ Foppert pitched for us last year compared to Hermanson did, we're going to be better off there as well.
2. The division is a lot weaker. LA had the best pitching staff and worst lineup last year. Now the pitching staff isn't as good with the losses of Brown and Quantrill and the lineup is even weaker. Arizona traded away Schilling and gave up too much to get Sexson. Colorado is only slighty improved. San Diego is vastly improved but they were over 30 games out, and they aren't THAT improved.
3. The injuries. Snow, Durham, Rueter, all missed significant time due to injuries. Schmidt was injured the entire second half and missed about 5 starts. Bonds and Schmidt both spent a couple weeks on bereavement leave.
So overall, the Giants will make the playoffs easily but will lose in the playoffs again.

First of all, Michael Tucker isnt half the hitter (or fielder) Jose Cruz is, and thats saying alot cos Cruz is just north of average. Furthermore, no THREE roster upgrades could make up for Neifi Perez swinging a bat for you, much less the difference between Pierzynski and Santiago.

Brett Tomko cannot possibly be counted on to be the starter Sidney Ponson is. Granted, Ponson was less than terrific with the Giants last season, but hes a better poitcher hands down. Tomko, youll recall, was horrendous for the Cardinals last year. Nen, meanwhile, has had peopl expressing serious doubts about his return--and certainly cant, as a closer, make up for the loss of his two setup men. Couple that with doubts about Schmidt's arm, their really incredibly bad lineup, I am picking San Diego to win the West.

How did this suddenly become a Giants forum? If McCovey hits the ball a foot higher,

The Cubs have been "lovable losers" forever. They had a decent run in the 1930s, 1969, 1984, and the meltdown in 2003. But generally their fans don't expect them to win; they're just looking for a nice afternoon at the ballpark.

We Sox fans, on the other hand, have had the big enchilada stolen right out of our mouths over and over. 1946, 48, 49, 67, 75, 78, 86, 03 -- every time they have fallen just short, usually in a remarkable manner. The Cubs have Steve Bartman. We have Slaughter and Pesky, Denny Galehouse, Ed Amrbrister (if that play had been ruled interference, and the Sox go on to win Game Two, then Fisk's Game Six homer would have been a "Mazeroski Moment"), Torrez and Dent, Schiraldi and Buckner, and Grady Little and Aaron Boone. AAARRGHHHH!!!

The torment of the fans is much deeper, the passion stronger, and the celebration when "it" finally happens will surpass anything in history.

Red Sox of course, so close, but yet can't get over the hump! This is
the year 2004 that the Red Sox win the World Series against the Cubs
in 6 games!

I was in Chicago when the Cubs lost the NLCS to San Diego

http://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/1984_NLCS.shtml

The Cubs were up 2-0 and all they needed was one win in San Diego, it never came.

2003 they were up 3 games to 1 over Florida with the last 2 at home.

This is a team that has not won a pennant since 1945 ( and that was tainted because of World War II) so their last legit pennant was 1938

Since they won a Series in 1908, they have won pennants in 1910,1918,1929,1932,1935,1938 and 1945

post season non pennant
NLDS
2003: Cubs 3, Braves 2
1998: Braves 3, Cubs 0
NLCS
2003: Marlins 4, Cubs 3
1986: Giants 4, Cubs 1
1984: Padres 3, Cubs 2

But look at the White Sox!!!!!!!

They last won a World Series in 1917.

Since then they have won 2 pennants, 1919 and 1959

ALCS
1983: Orioles 3 White Sox 1
1992: Blue Jays 4 White Sox 2
ALDS
2000: Mariners 3 White Sox 0

2 teams in one city and neither can win

amazing

Tucker is an upgrade, because anyone would be an upgrade over Cruz. Cruz crapped out in the clutch time and time again. Every single clutch situation Cruz would fail, the worst one being game 3 when he dropped a routine fly ball.

Tomko will do better than us than Ponson did. Ponson was garbage in SF. And Pierzynski replacing Santiago is as big an upgrade as Perez replacing Aurilia is a downgrade. And as for Nen, it looks highly likely he'll be ready for opening day. He won't be what he was but he'll still be better than Worrell. And as for Schmidt, his arm is in better condition than it was last year and he had the best year of any pitcher in the NL.
