Depends on who we gave up, of course. But given Bard's struggles and the relative ages of Wakefield and Mirabelli, it may just make sense to let the two of them ride off into the sunset together.

I cannot wait to see the reaction for Mirabelli!

Idk, I liked Bard. He wasn't THAT bad.. Belli was bad in his first year too and Bard O hasn't been costing us much. Plus he's young, cheap, defensive catcher who can take pitches. Easy to lock in and fill the back up catching spot for a long time.

Seanez and Bard for Belli would solve two problems. No more passed balls every three pitches, and no more Seanez. Wow. So basically we (may have) traded Seanez and Bard for Loretta, and we kept Belli.

Bard's a pretty OK player, but he is what he is and he's just about average for a catcher. You don't bend over backwards to keep average players.
I'm disappointed that so many people are that down on Seanez. Arnold is right that Seanez is too much to give up for a backup catcher, except in this case the peace of mind may just be worth it.
I think the real lesson here is just how disparate the AL and NL are righ tnow. Pedro's throwing 86 and making a run at the Cy, all these NL pitchers keep coming to the AL and getting shelled, and Bronson goes to the NL Central and is suddenly dominant.

I wonder if there is any possibility of him playing other positions(almost certainly not though). Id really hate to lose him as we would be losing all of our depth at catcher and Tek is already hurting...(please dont throw Ken Huckaby and Corky Miller in my face...

Possible, but I doubt it. He's had one appearance at AAA. They've committed to taking their time with him. One possibility that hasn't been mentioned is Mike Holtz. That would get Tito a lefty in the pen. Holtz has pitched well so far for the PawSox (2.61 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, 14 Ks in 10.1 IP).

A steal? Eh, it's alright.
Bard is younger, cheaper, doesn't have a sore back and is probably better overall than Mirabelli right now. The only thing Mirabelli has over him is that he can catch the knuckleball. That's important to Boston, but San Diego made out pretty well to get Meredith and cash thrown in.
Mirabelli is hitting .182/.308/.227 this year after being pretty bad offensively last year (.228/.309//412). Welcome back, though!

May 1 2006, 10:57 AM
This is awful. We traded a young catcher who was learning to catch a knuckeball and could hit a little for a 36 year old with a bad back who's hitting .182. What happened to thinking "long term"? Why has everyone forgotten how to spell Cla Meredith?

May 1 2006, 10:58 AM
Well, glad Belli is back, if only because it stabilizes our rotation with Wakes now (hopefully). However, giving up Meredith with Bard was a little too steep. Long-term, we now don't have a future young catcher on the horizon as Varitek will not be able to be the starter by the last year of his contract (gave away Shoppach and now Bard), which concerns me in 2008.
Fiskian Pole Shot
May 1 2006, 11:00 AM
I didn't see much hope for Meredith as a huge part of the Sox' future roster, so I don't think this is much of a loss. I think that Cla is the exact type of MiL pitcher that a team should use as trade bait.
Only one man's opinion, though.
Ellis Greenwell
May 1 2006, 11:00 AM
Hypothetically speaking, if back in January or so the Sox had made a trade of Bard and Meredith for Seanez and Loretta, most everyone here would be thrilled. That is basically the end-result but I think the fact that it's May 1st and there's been little instant gratification to speak of regarding Seanez or Loretta, people are not happy. I think this is a fair deal if you look at the big picture.
BentleySoxFan
May 1 2006, 11:01 AM
Did anyone really think Meredith was ever going to be a solid major league reliever? I sure didn't.
We gave up Bard, Cla, a few bucks, and probably a A-ball prospect for Dougie. As posted over on SoSH, 14 of Wake's 19 runs allowed have been earned (73%), whereas the AL average is 91% earned. That's why we got him. Also, can't hurt to bring in a guy who can hit LHP a little.

Velvet Elvis
May 1 2006, 11:02 AM
With 'Belli gone, Wake's value plummeted. It's an expensive insurance policy, but for Wake to be effective he needs Mirabelli. Wake can pitch 300 innings, but if someone isn't catching (or blocking) the ball, it's all for naught.
Giving up Cla was a bit steep, but ultimately necessary. The Loretta trade was good because it upgraded our defense up the middle. Unfortunately, having bard catching Wake negated that.
At the start of todays game, our team defense will be better.
