Maureen Mullen - Twomley stuck in on-deck circle

Twomley had hoped to start the season with the Class-A Greenville (S.C.) Drive of the South Atlantic League, a step up from Lowell.

His baseball dreams, at least for the time being, have been put on hold — in the baseball limbo known as extended spring training. Rather than a trip to Greenville — or anywhere in the Sox minor league system — to start the season, Twomley was kept in Fort Myers.

“He simply did not beat out the outfielders/first basemen who made the Greenville team,” Cherington said. “He needs to continue to improve the consistency of his at-bats and defensively at first base. He is playing both outfield and first base now to increase his versatility.”

Twomley, surprised — and disappointed — at being kept in Florida, retains the optimism of a young hopeful.
