Art Davidson - On Baseball: New England kid sets sights on Fenway
Natale was assigned to Greenville again at the outset of this season and has emerged as one of the best players in the South Atlantic League. The 23-year-old right-handed hitter is fourth in the league in batting (.346) and RBI (32), and is tied for fifth in home runs (8). Natale is a patient hitter who knows the strike zone in the mold of Kevin Youkilis. He's second in the league in on-base percentage (.485). Natale's strikeout-to-walk ratio (15-30) is exactly what the Red Sox want from their hitters.
"He does a good job of protecting the strike zone," said Red Sox director of player development Mike Hazen. "He doesn't swing at a lot of bad pitches. He comes from a small school, but he's developed into a prospect."
Natale believes it's best to take a simple approach to what can be a complex game.
"My philosophy is to see the ball and hit it," he said. "The pitchers are much better than those I faced while in college, their breaking pitches are a lot better. I'm just looking for a good pitch to hit."
Natale (5-foot-9, 180 pounds) is exactly the same size as another talented Red Sox minor league infielder who isn't big in stature but has become an impact player, Pawtucket's Dustin Pedroia.
