Again, I admire your optimism. I will keep the faith and watch this team until they are mathematically eliminated.
It just pisses me off when this team underperforms. Like when you have the bases loaded and GIDP. TWICE.
And when you have the lead in the ninth inning with the best closer in the lead. And the game gets tied.
And with the bases empty with 2 down, Papelbon gets rocked and loses the game.
And when all this happens, not against the Yankees, but the Kansas City Royals. And the Devil Rays.
That said, tomorrow is another day, and the Sox could potentially be 0.5 games out of the Wild Card after tomorrow. And don't forget, the Yankees were ahead of the Sox by 3.0 games for most of the season until the suckitude started. And look where they are now. Two can play that game. But first, they have to WIN.

I think we all got so used to Papelbon being unhittable that we forgot: he's mortal, and a rookie to boot.
He's still far and away the best closer in baseball right now so I wouldn't get bent out of shape about it. Like you said, even he is mortal. Hell, Mariano has had some rough stretches here and there as well and he's carved out a nice career.
For what it's worth I don't think Manny had a shot at throwing out that winning run.
Becket pitched well too tonight.
Though I don't know if Javy is your best bet to catch, I fear Huckabee a bit more to be honest.
If you guys didn't give up being down 3-0 in the ALCS a few years I hardly see a reason to get defeatest because your three games back in August. You have a good team but even good teams go into a slump, this is just one of those tough stretches. They'll work through it. Can't say I didn't enjoy the game tonight but I certainly am not counting the Sox out until they're mathematically eliminated and I doubt that happens any time in the next 6 weeks, if at all.
Cheers ~ Jamie

I am not going to bitch when Manny effs up, because I love when he hits a bomb, but I gotta say this: A first inning homer minus a ninth inning brain fart = zero. Its like 1-1=0. I don't care if the ball ends up in Keith Olberman's mom's lap, you don't stuff the Goddamn ball in your pocket in that situation. But the number one loser of the game is Pena. No way should he GIDP with the bases loaded. Thats like a fat guys going to food camp and leaving hungry. In a close second is the ever big bootied J Lo. If he'd not had 2 RBI, HE'D win the loser award. The winner award goes to me, because I missed half the game at work, though I glanced at it on our TV. There are two players on this team who have withstood this bad stretch and put together good numbers consistently. Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz. They are providing almost 100% of our offense right now, and in my eyes you can't get down on Manny for not coming up with that ball when he may or may not have gotten the out when he is carrying a great portion of the load offensively. Hell, he has a 24 game hit streak and hes batting around like .385 during that streak with about 8 or 9 homers.
This team is just in a slump. Lopez will gain confidence in handling the staff with each game. We obviously don't have the tools in the pen yet, but hopefully Delcarmen and Hansen can settle in a little better. I still have complete faith in Paps, and maybe even Foulke can come back and be effective. Our offense will get back on track once the bottom of the order starts producing again. We are 3 GB and have nowhere to look but up. I'm looking forward to a good stretch run and this season is far from over.

This team has got to just take a collective breath and start putting it together when it matters. They are plenty capable of doing so. The problem isn't so much the offense or the pitching. The problem is neither side getting it done in game situations. Grounding into DP's with 1 out and the bases loaded twice within 4 innings of each other is just unaccepatable. Giving up homeruns like it's batting practice when you come in to hold/save a game is unacceptable. They are better than that, and I still believe they can turn it around. Just stay within a couple games and this thing can come back around.
The main thing I'm worried about is Paps. This week he has looked way too hittable. I'm really really worried that he is starting to show signs of fatigue that pitchers just aren't used to because they haven't gone through a season this long before. If he doesn't start nailing it down, it won't matter who else starts playing well.

I swear I saw this game on Sunday at St. Pete.
I did, I just know it.

I love the condensed games on MLB.TV. I can go to sleep at a semi-reasonable time, and then quickly watch the extended highlights in the morning. The good news - I was able to get a good night's sleep. The bad news - now I'm going to be pissed all day long.
