Wow! Great stuff, Nuffced. Where did you find them?

His and her boxes for Tom and Jean, overflow fans standing in the outfield as late as the 1930's, lousy sightlines for football.

The photo of the rally for Irish independence was especially dramatic. It belongs in histories of Ireland and of Irish Americans.

Brilliant photo's, really liked the rally for irish independence picture , its winging its way over to a number of addresses in the homeland now thumbsup.gif
The Love Below
Amazing stuff, it's interesting to see the naked skyline of Boston, aside from the pictures from the 60's. But in one of the late 30's pictures, you can see the Prudential building being built, that's what it looks like at least. Is the Pru that old?
The Love Below
Question, why is the Monster around in the 'Duffy's Cliff' picture from 1928, but you have it being built in 1933? Wasn't Duffy's cliff long gone by 1928?
Nuf Ced
The "Monster" we know and love was built in the winter of 1933/4, when it redone and covered with tin. The picture with Duffy's Cliff shows the old wooden wall. I found it interesting as I had thought the scoreboard didn't become part of the wall until the Yawkey rebuild.

The Pru being built can be seen in the Patriots pic from 1964 and Opening Day of 1964. The 64 Opener was a fund raiser for the JFK Library and still only drew 24,000, which was a big crowd for the Sox.

These pics come from the Boston Public Library database, and many have not been seen for decades. The Braves pics show how the team was second fiddle to the Sox, as the lack of fans at the 1948 opener is dramatic. The Braves Field scoreboard was the first fully electric board in the major leagues and after the Braves left it would get a second life in Kansas City.

Thank you very much Nuf Ced. Being a newbie to Red Sox nation i'm having a really good time learning about the history of the Red Sox. I'm currently reading a book about Fenway written by CHB. It was cool to read about the Rooters and the orignial Nuf Ced. I have a question. When they let people on the field in that picture what were the circumstances. Why did they do it? Did they just rope it off? If the ball got into the crowd was it a ground rule double?

Schillondahill

reason they did it was greed

yes it would be a ground rule double, I was shocked that the practice continued into the at least the mid 30's from looking at those pics

Regarding the rally for Irish Independence 1919, the BPL has an exhibit up at Fenway Park right now and the photo is dated ca. 1921.

I'd love to learn the precise date. Any idea?

Great pics, thanks a lot for putting 'em up!

I love the way that the city behind the wall grew and changed, as well as Fenway itself (of course).

Great work!

Awesome pics, glad it was bumped back up as I never saw these the first time.

Great to see how Fenway has changed through the years as well as the backdrop. Very cool seeing the Pru being built in a few of the pics

This picture is one of the most interesting to me. If you look closely, there's a big gaping hole where the centerfield bleachers are now. When was the triangle born? Did they add those seats in 1933 during the reconstruction?

Just imagine if that hole was still there now. Double and triples off the wall now would have been inside-the-park HRs for sure.

I believe it was during the 1933 reconstruction that center field area was redone to what we know as the triangle.

I wish there were more photos of the 1920s-early 1930s time period when the Red Sox were the laughing stock of baseball. I believe there was at least one previous fire that took out the left field stands and it would be interesting to see what Fenway looked like heading into its reconstruction.

Don't bother thanking him, he's probably locked up somewhere. (If not, he should be)
