Royal Rooters > THE COOLER > ROYAL ROOTERS ARCHIVES > 2006 REGULAR SEASON GAME THREADS
RedSoxAnni
Game time: 7:05 pm

Scheduled starters: Josh Beckett (14-10, 5.09) v. Chien-Ming Wang (17-5, 3.66)

New York Weather: 11 am observation at LGA: Wind out of the east at 16 mph, visibility 2.5 miles, broken clouds at 700 feet, overcast layer at 1,100 feet, temperature 69F, DP 64F

Forecast: A low extending from central NY across central PA is moving very slowly to the southeast, and another low offshore are both going to affect NYC weather through tomorrow.

There's a chance of rain all day, but conditions will slowly improve into the middle part of the evening. There's a good chance they'll be able to play the game, but it may be delayed.

It'll be in the middle 60's at game time. The wind should remain east all day, which is blowing IN.

I'll be there to see if we have any signs of life left.

If we can lose 5 in a row why can't we turn it around and win 4. Do it for pride guys!

It is possible. The Yankees can clinch the division if they take 3 out of 4.

Has there been a Red Sox/Yankees series in the past 9 seasons that has been this under-anticipated?

I remember when we played a doubleheader in late 1997 in the Bronx, and there was absolutly no buzz at the place. That must have been the last time these 2 teams played a series with so little at stake.

I still want to beat them, though.

I don't know if anyone else has heard the ads for the ESPN Red Sox-Yanks games on ESPN radio, but it advertises "watch the Yankees against their floundering rivals, the Red Sox" for the last week.

Just mentioning it, b/c while th Red Sox are floundering, I've never heard an ad on ESPN in that tone, ie, would make you NOT want to watch it ("floundering"/poor competition). It's accurate, but I don't hear those terms when the Devil Rays or Cubs are on the ESPN game.

Reminds me of a time when the shoe was on the other foot.

In 1986, the Sox had already clinched as they headed into a four-game regular-season-ending series against the MFY. A true yawn going in, but the MFY played their asses off and swept us.

We still won the divvy by 5 games, IIRC. thumbsup.gif

Surely we can split the two doubleheaders to stave off the final atrocity of the season!

I wonder what ESPN will put on, maybe the usual potpourri of other games?

I've heard it, but haven't thought about it from your angle... you're right, but so are they, so what the hell. Let 'em have their fun, the assholes.

"Rainout" - that's the best outcome to a Sox/Yankees game since the beginning of June.

AND it's Friday. That's what I'm talking about.

Yet one more reason to hate ESPN.
If they said the red sox are floundering, it just shows how badly ESPN has become the worldwide leader in dip-shittery. (dip-shittedness?)
The Red Sox are not floundering. Not even close.
A flounder is a fish.
The Red Sox are foundering, as in to be bogged down, disabled or sink.

Come on, ESPN! You have a half-dozen fishing shows on ESPN2 on weekends. Surely, you know the difference between a flat fish that lives on the ocean floor and a baseball team that's been circling the drain for a month now.

Actually, the Sox are doing both:

QUOTE
Usage Note: The verbs founder and flounder are often confused. Founder comes from a Latin word meaning “bottom” (as in foundation) and originally referred to knocking enemies down; it is now also used to mean “to fail utterly, collapse.” Flounder means “to move clumsily, thrash about,” and hence “to proceed in confusion.” If John is foundering in Chemistry 1, he had better drop the course; if he is floundering, he may yet pull through.
