This could be the ugliest matchup of Starting Pitchers since Kenneth "Cheese-Grater" Sampson, so nicknamed after a heated lovers quarrel with a scorned Quaker woman cost him his boyish good looks, and his Cleveland Spiders took on Abe "Sockarm" MacDougal and The Brooklyn Superbas back in August of 1899.

Ol' Sockarm, some of you might recall, earned his name after a Confederate cannon took his non-throwing arm at Antietam, along with his spleen, and 46% of his face. When pitching, he wore a crudely modified prosthesis, made up of a sanitary sock filled with sand, and attatched to the uniform with a mixture of paste, tobacco juice, and horse dung.

Anyway, go Sox! May the best, ugliest pitcher win (ours).

This is where the sox sweep the double header, sweep tomorrows, then sweep the twins and our 1 1/2 games out at the end of the week.

Francona said that no one would play in all four games, but that the regulars would likely play in three of them, so this is probably just Ortiz's game to sit out.

Ortiz's lifetime BA against RJ is .143, with .214/.280/.494 in 25 plate appearances. He's walked twice and struck out seven times. This was probably not a bad game for him to get some rest.

Wait, were they chanting "M-V-P", or "Reached via FC?"

This is a pretty good ballgame, regardless of the standings.

There is still some magic with NY / Bos.

I expected 2-2 for the series.

Did'nt you?

I wish they'd play the guys looking for jobs next year........more Hinske, more Carlos Pena, Pedroia should be playing every game, same for Murphy.....and for all that's holy, let's see MDC and/or Hansen closing games instead of Timlin.

I agree 100% the fact that Pedroia and Murphy arent playing every day is a joke.

Hansen should be closing, why Timlin? Theres just not excuse

Yes, but they might play themselves out of a job too, like WMP appears to be trying to do today. I guess OCJ doesn't do game threads (or has something better to do). He'd have a field day today.

Tavarez!
Who could think he would at some time in this season have 5 IP in a game, throwing 84 pitches and not giving up 30 runs?

He must have found the secret to pitching in Boston (and New York).

Craig Hansen blowing leads. Just like old times.
SFFM38
banghead.gif I hate the fact its 5-5 just because TOO MUCH memories for me!! ( ALCS 7 back in 03 ) EEERIE AND YUCK!
BobHeise
Breslow coughs up a couple. Down to our final three outs in the 9th with Fahrnsworth on to close.

C'mon Youks. Van Papi pinch hit for Pena, or for Kapler if we get there far?

warren.gif Wow the excitement on this board for the Sox/Yankees game is just too much.

I agree as well. We don't need to see the washed up end of Mike Timlin when Hansen could be gaining experience and learning from his mistakes.

Murphy should have been starting tonight since he did a fantastic job earlier today. I like watching him go out there and play because he's going out there and busting his butt off. He like Pedroia, have earned the right to play everyday for the rest of THIS season.

To be fair, WMP still had 2 hits tonight. dunno.gif
