Royal Rooters > THE COOLER > ROYAL ROOTERS ARCHIVES > 2006 REGULAR SEASON GAME THREADS
RedSoxAnni
Game time: 2:06 pm

Scheduled starters: Hayden Penn (0-3, 13.76) v. Devern Hansack (0-1, 5.40)

Boston weather: 10 am observation at BOS: Wind out of the southeast at 18 mph, visibility 10 miles in light rain, broken clouds at 3,800 feet and 7,000 feet, overcast layer at 9,000 feet, temperature 59F, DP 49F

Forecast: We're looking at showery rain with isolated thunderstorms throughout the day. At 10 am, there was a line of heavy showers just east of the Hudson valley, extending south through NYC into NJ. The line is moving east. Ahead of that line is a convergence zone with showers now forming in the Hartford area. It's coming this way, folks.

There will be periods of rain all day. Some of the rain will be heavy, and there's a chance of a thunderstorm. The wind will be out of the east to southeast at close to 20 mph. It won't get out of the 60's. In other words, a lousy day.

There's a better than even chance that the game won't be played. Or if it is played, it will likely be delayed and interrupted.

And that's the season...

Here's the latest press release from the Sox:

The current weather forecast (provided by the Red Sox private weather service, Meteorlogix) in the vicinity of Fenway Park calls for rain showers during the early to mid-afternoon hours.

The Fenway Park gates will open at the regularly scheduled time of 12:05 p.m., and the Red Sox will make every effort to play this afternoon's game with the Baltimore Orioles. However, the Red Sox want to alert our fans to the current forecast for the Fenway area.

This forecast is of course subject to change as the day progresses.

The latest observation at BOS: Wind out of the southeast at 12 mph, visibility 10 miles in light rain, scattered clouds at 4,500 feet with an overcast at 7,000 feet, temperature 59F, DP 50F.

The Sox have announced an "indefinite" rain delay. The tarp's on the field. This game is in the hands of the umpires, but my more cynical side feels they'll call it when they've sold out all the sausages they bought for today's game. After all, it won't keep until Spring.

Agreed, although I hope to see the game go on simply so that Trot can get the nice send-off he's earned.
Sad day. Matches perfectly the feel of Giamatti's piece "The Green Fields of the Mind".

Devern Hansack pitches the final game of the season, if it starts. Who woulda thunkit?

Hopefully the skies clear and they get the game in. Trot bats leadoff, so maybe he can get up twice even if it's a rain-shortened affair.
SFFM38
hope this game gets going soon, suppose to dip into low 40s for tonight and also I hope blue jays gets killed by MFY so this way I will tell people we are tied with freaking Blue Jays ( if we can WIN this one )
RedSoxAnni
Well, the back edge of this band of rain is between Springfield and Worcester right now, but there are more narrow bands behind it. It's not raining at Springfield or Hartford right now, but there's light rain reported at Albany. With the wind out of the east, this weather is likely to swirl around and back in on us all evening.

I think the best we can hope for is another hour or so of light rain, with a chance of showery rains throughout the night.

Have they sold all the sausages yet? I'm sure the Dunkin' Donuts concession is doing well!
BostonSox37
They need to get this game in today, if for no other reason than to give the fans a shot to show Trot their appreciation. As much as he has declined, I'm going to miss that guy.

My thoughts, too. Even if they play only an inning let him lead off and then have him take the field before replacing him in right. We'll miss T-rot's hard-nose play.

HEY! The NY Jets have stolen Sweet Caroline. (Frankly, they can have it)
SFFM38
2+ hours rain delay and counting so far!!!
SoxAroundTheWorld
What a most unfulfilling way to end a most unfulfilling season. They should just call it and put us all out of our misery. Let Trot come on to the field to accept his thank-yous, but let's just end it.

How many days until pitchers and catchers report?
RedSoxAnni
The area of showers should be east of Boston in about a half hour. The rain has stopped at Worcester and Providence. There are still narrow bands of showers "upstream", and there's a chance of showery rain through the evening.

If they are going to play this game, they'll start it within the hour.

RedSoxAnni
It looks like they've set 5:25 pm as the new start time.

Play ball????
BoSoxGirl75
Part of me wants them to get this game in, because I know it is going to be a long off season. I'm really going to miss baseball.

Oh well..Here's to a long, crazy off season.

Thank you #7 for playing your heart out for us. Good luck to wherever you end up. No matter where you go you will always be remembered in Red Sox nation.

MFLetou
I've not yet come to grips with the concept of a Trot-less Red Sox. I'm not going to think about it.

I guess we have to wait 'til the seventh or eighth inning. If the Sox released a lot of tickets this morning, the streak could well be in trouble.

Thus ends another season.
QUOTE
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then, just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops."

Awe, come on, it's not that bad. Just remember, you could be a Rockies fan. You have no idea how much they've been forced to suffer. They were in 1st place briefly in july, but ended up tied for last in the weakest division in baseball, thanks in part to an awful front office and to possibly the worst manager in baseball in Clint Hurdle. They scored one more run than they allowed this year, and yet they finished 5 games below .500. This year was disappointing for Sox fans, but once you re-adjusted your expectations, there was a lot to enjoy.

Go Sox!

The "weakest division in baseball" has two playoff entrants with the 2nd and 3rd best records in the NL and no Baltimore and Tampa Bay to beat on. The Rockies have some great young players, Hawpe, Holliday, Sullivan, et al.

Well, at least the Rockies fans get to watch their team in a modern park, with adult-sized seats, good sight lines, real restrooms, reasonable parking......don't get me started on THIS topic.

Some really good steak and chop houses around there too. warren.gif

But come on, I'd rather watch an A's - Red Sox game on TV than go to the Coliseum. Fenway? Rather be there every time. Try living thousands of miles away and then tell us about it. OK, to be fair, at the A's Coliseum, I'm in "enemy" territory, not so at Fenway, so I can tolerate some inconvenience. Still, at my size, I've not experienced any seat size problems.
