CNN is reporting that "as a precautionary measure" fighters are being scrambled in cities across the U.S.
Now, we've had similar incidents sicne 9/11 (I recall a teenager flying a plane into an office building in Florida) and I don't recall fighters being scrambled.
Hopefully that's just over-reactionary.

It seems to be a bit of an overreaction...but who knows? Have they confirmed that it was a small plane?

FAA has officially stated it was a "fixed-wing" aircraft, and has ruled out the possibility this was a copter.

Everything I'm reading seems to have different information - and just about everyone is citing what someone else reported as part of their own reporting.
The most updated story on MSNBC.com leads with:
QUOTE
A small plane crashed into a high-rise condominium Wednesday on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, touching off a raging fire that sent a pillar of black smoke over the city, police said.
But then further down in the story they say:
QUOTE
The FAA said it was too early to determine what type of aircraft was involved, or what might have caused the crash in the middle of a hazy, overcast October afternoon.
I don't know if that means they aren't sure if it was a plane or helicopter, or just that they aren't sure what type of plane.
The other thing that stands out:
QUOTE
Officials at the Federal Aviation Administration and the FBI said there was no reason to believe the incident was terrorism-related.
That's good. We don't need 10/11 to turn into another 9/11. Of course, it's also an early report, so we'll see.

It's a wet and hazy day here in the city. I'm over on 20th and 11th and can't see any column of smoke (of course I'm about 65-70 city blocks away). That is right where my ex's grandmother lives. Don't know if I should call, our last talk together was horrible. I'm sure it's fine.

Channel 4/NBC here in NY reporting no structural damage to the building…no firefighter casualties…fire appears to be under control…the plane apparently didn’t penetrate into the building; just hit and went up in flames…lots of debris on the street…
Sadly, a charred body strapped into a plane seat was on the ground. God.
The plane took off from Teterboro, NJ and was scheduled to land in White Plains, NY…witnesses are saying that the plane was flying straight & then took a 90-degree turn in an out-of-control fashion…doubtful it’s an attack, more so mechanical failure…

Really sad, but probably another case of an inexperienced low-time pilot flying a complex airplane... Lidle got his pilot's license about two years ago. I don't know if he had an instrument rating, but it's possible that he was trying to stay VFR under the 1,500 foot ceiling and ran out of sky. The CNN report said it was being operated under VFR. The ceiling was 1,500 feet with 7 miles visibility at TEB at 3 pm. That's marginal, even for an experienced pilot.
Lidle's airplane is a Cirrus SR-20. I don't know what model it is, but the SR-20 cruises at around 150 knots, which is 165 mph.
One mistake that beginning pilots commonly make, especially in new airplanes like the Cirrus, is they pay too much attention to all the bells and whistles on the intrument panel and don't look out the window. GPS will take you there, but it won't tell you where the buildings are.
With 7 miles visibility, at 165 mph, you have seconds to react between the time you see something and you close in on it.
