Full Version: Mientkiewicz signs with the Yanks
Royal Rooters > WE'RE TALKIN' BASEBALL > AROUND THE MAJORS > That team 206.4 miles away
millar goes yard
This probably barely merits its own thread, but it looks like Ol' Eyechart will be their 25th man.

Here's the Rotoworld blurb......

QUOTE
The Yankees have reached an agreement on a one-year deal with Doug Mientkiewicz, pending a physical.
While the Yankees were interested in a right-handed bat initially, Mientkiewicz made the most sense for the team of any of the cheap options at first base, particularly since he can be platooned with Josh Phelps or Andy Phillips. He'll upgrade the defense and contribute occasionally as the team's No. 9 hitter.

Didn't Minky say one time during the whole Minky v. Millar episode something along the lines of "I'm not such a bad hitter. I batted third on a playoff caliber team."
How does he feel about hitting 9th on a playoff caliber team?
But mostly, who gives a crap?

This continues a remarkable trend over the last few years whereby the Yanks sign or trade for ex Red Sox, with a particular focus on players from the 2004 championship team. The list would include Johnny Damon, Mike Meyers, Mark Bellhorn, Alan Embree, Tony Clark, Tom Gordon, John Flaherty, Paul Quantrill, Roger Clemens, and now Eyechart. I'm sure I'm missing some others.

I'm sure these acquisitions were made for rational reasons, but I can't help thinking they're done primarily as an attempt to annoy RedSox Nation.

Waiting for the announcement that they've signed Loretta....

It looks like Loretta's going to sign with Houston.

However, don't forget Wade Boggs!

Jason Giambi:

"I'm not on steroids. Mientkiewicz just stole my balls."

I think he's the starting first baseman, or will be in a platoon with one of the RH hitters they have. I think he's going to play a lot. Maybe they're trying to help A-Rod avoid throwing errors.

It hasn't been completely one-way, Boston to New York.
We did get Mike Torrez....oh, never mind.

This one hurts just a bit more... he was holding the ball at "that moment", ending the greatest season of our lives.

I hope the Fenway crowd chants "bring it back" or something along those lines.

There's probably no surprise to that. (Yankees taking Red Sox players when they hit agency that is) because Red Sox players and especially red Sox fans put extreme emphasis on Yankees games. The team tends to pull out all the stops against New York -- meaning that the Yankees see these guys playing their best with no holds barred.

Also if Mienkteiwicz was a second baseman, center fielder or shortstop rather than a first baseman he probably would be able to start for a team not from Kansas City. He's really not so bad a hitter (good OBP,no power), it's just that his position has a gazillion hitters that are better than he is and first base is where everyone tries to put aging sluggers for one last hurrah..

I don't think the Yanks really care so much that they are ex-Sox as much as they care about getting the right players who fits a team need. The Sox grab a lot of talent so it's no wonder that the Yanks pick them up after FA.

AVG .283 | HR 4 | RBI 43 | OBP .359 | SLG .411

That was Dougies numbers last year.

for his career he sports:
AVG .270 | HR 59 | RBI 348 | OBP .359 | SLG .405

If he is the Yankees starting 1B I'll be more than happy. Considering that Giambi struggles when he is the DH.

How could I forget the Chicken Man!? I was focussing more on the very recent past. But Wade certainly counts, and it was always mildly disturbing to see Don Zimmer sitting next to Torre in the dugout. Of course they also snapped up Joe Kerrigan as well.

I'm sure you're right and I keep telling myself that too. But at some deep, primordial level I understand that this is the Yankee front office equivalent of a 12-year old punk insulting another kid's mother in the schoolyard.
