Nick Cafardo has an update on Lester's outing this morning.

Cafardo's boston.com report

Lefty Jon Lester saw his first exhibition action of the spring this morning against the Twins at Hammond Stadium, throwing eight pitches in a 1-2-3 first inning.

Lester, who had been slated to throw just one inning, retired each of the three batters he faced on ground balls. Three of Lester’s pitches hit 89 miles per hour and one hit 90 on the radar guns of the 18 or so scouts that were on hand to watch him and Twins starter Sidney Ponson.

This was the lineup for the B game:

Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
Kerry Robinson, LF
George Kottaras, C
Jeff Bailey, 1B
Alex Ochoa, RF
Joe McEwing, SS
Bobby Scales, 2B
Chad Spann, 3B
Kevin Cash, DH

I understand the whole "take it slow" situation completely......but 8 pitches? Maybe they didn't want to let him sit between innings and have to cool down then come back out?

Maybe they had the pitching line up scripted in advance and didn't want to change it.. One inning lester, 2 innings someone else, two innings for a 3rd guy, etc., etc.
A lot of guys got to get their work in.

Any update? I get no audio at work ...

Scoreless going into the bottom of the 4th. I haven't had a chance to listen, so I don't know any details.

Beckett pitched three scoreless innings. He gave up 2 hits, including a double in the first, and struck out two. No walks.

Okajima pitched the fourth; one single, one K.

No score in the bottom of the fourth.

The "B" game apparently ended in a 0-0 tie after the Twins ran out of pitchers. Good old B games.

Our "killer" lineup looks more like "roadkill" so far this spring. Maybe we should revisit that Helton trade...
Imgran
Tavarez struggling again.

You know, some guys just need to play a certain role. I think maybe Tavarez needs to start games..

Dealing him to a team like the Nats for a decent reliever would be plus plus because they start him for 3.75 mil and we get a good reliever which is most of what we'd use Julian for.

Oh, you're just saying that because they only have one hit (DP double off Billingsley, later stranded at third) in 5 innings, with 14 LOB. wink.gif

EDIT: Gameday recants Scales' second error. 2-0 LADs. Tavarez has loaded the bases with his signature "when in trouble, HBP" move.

Dont we always suck in Spring Training? I remember last year - the first time i paid attention to ST - I thought we were awful but by the time the regular season kicked off we were pretty good.

Or.....it could be that we're less than a week into games and we're still shaking the rust off? Just a thought..... smokin.gif

To declare any player's status or role this early in ST is absurd. Pre-season statistics are virtually meaningless.

If I recall correctly, Foulke had a terrible spring in '04. Oh, and Mike Lowell's bat looked "slow" last spring. eyes.gif

Please, stop the madness.

You mean, there's a reason they put the "training" part in the term "spring training"? Veterans working on a certain pitch, maybe a new pitch, over and over? Rookies trying to impress the coaching staff? Who'd a thunk... pimp.gif

And wasn't Crisp lighting it up last year, in ST? I know he got injured but still, bad predictor for the regular season.
