There is no way Alex Gonzalez could GIDP anywhere near as often as JV.

El Capitan is toast.

This just in, Matsuzaka is good.

Don't worry we still owe him $20M over the next two years.

Talk about a tune up - no hits allowed! How long was Matsuzaka in the game?

Just heard Papelbon get out of the inning unscathed.

EDIT - Just heard, five innings of no-hit ball. Bad news is 5 walks, did I hear that right? Ick. But no runs, so that's good.

Should we be concerned about the offense? Or is it normal for pitching to be ahead of the offense in Spring Training?

Five runs in 2/3 inning.

So is everyone sure they don't want to give up Lowell and Hansen for Helton at 50% of his salary?

I don't care what anyone says, I still think Hansen is so grossly overrated and will always be average at best. Yes, I know, he's still young, but he hasn't shown ANYTHING at this point, and I don't see him doing a complete 180. I think he'll be a 4.00 ERA middle reliever at best in his career.

(I've been a supporter of that trade all along thumbsup.gif )

*EDIT: I just wanted to add that he's the perfect example of a guy who can throw hard but has no idea on how to pitch.

From what I remember they wanted either Ellsbury or Buchholz as well. I don't believe it was ever Lowell and RP for Helton at 50%. I also believe that the Rockies were never anywhere near paying 50% of the deal. The Rockies were looking for a top prospect to sell to the fans why they were trading their face of the franchise and tons of cash. I really don't think it was ever going to be for 1 year of Mike Lowell and a RP. Plus they already have Garrett Atkins so why would they have traded for Lowell?

I coulda sworn numerous reports had the Sox pegged at paying like 50 or 60 percent of his salary. Also, it wasn't Lowell and just RP, IIFC, it was Lowell and Hansen. This was mostly just supposed to be a salary dump for the Rox, while getting decent talent in the deal as well.

Pitching comes along faster than hitting, but I think it's been a long enough spring that I'm starting to be concerned with the offense. Seems like starting the season after struggling in the spring would lead to confidence issues, beside the actual mechanical problems that are hindering the hitter.
2bshorty
If we're going solely off spring training, I'm concerned about the offense as well, but there have been some really watered-down lineups being thrown out there and I don't think most of the regulars give a crap at this point in the preseason, so I'm hoping it'll pick up. They're also seeing a lot of pitchers they've never seen before and will never see again, and while a major-league hitter should be able to take care of an AA pitcher most any day, they're only getting 1 or 2 ABs against them. I'll start the hard-core worrying the second or third week of the season wink.gif

Hansen. . .oh, jeez. He had nothing. Heck, he had less than nothing. I've only seen a display of pitching that bad maybe twice before, and he probably just pitched himself out of any shot at making the cut. I know you're not supposed to put much stock in ST performances, but holy sh*t, that was terrible. He's not ready on multiple levels.

Isn't Lowell and Hansen the same thing as Lowell and a RP? I understand he's a good RP prospect but he's still a RP. Lowell isn't really worth much IMO given that the Rockies already have a 3B who's better, and theres no way the Rockies would have ever done Hansen as the main part of a Helton deal where they are paying $40-$50M.

I can't believe Hansen is this bad. Whoever scouted him needs to be fired. Houston Street my ass.

Have you seen his minor league numbers? It has nothing to do with scouting. He dominated A, AA, and AAA by age 22.

Hansen Minor League Stats

Seriously, look at what he did in the minors so far. He was rushed and they messed with his mechanics, that doesn't mean the scouting was bad. Hansen needs a full year in AAA to get straight IMO.

He was one of the most highly touted pitchers in the draft 2 years ago. All thirty teams must have crappy scouts by that metric.

Like SuperManny said, Hansen absolutely DESTROYED the minors, and I am more than happy to allow him to spend the entire year at AA/AAA to rediscover that magic.
