Yankees fired director of performance enhancement Marty Miller.

The Phil Hughes injury was the last straw. Miller, hired over the winter as sort of a strength coach, was unpopular with some players and had several opt out of his program. The Yankees lost Mike Mussina, Chien-Ming Wang and Hideki Matsui to hamstring injuries before Hughes went down last night.

Seems like they fired him one day too late.

Fool me 17 times shame on me... fool me 18 times... shame on you?

So the question is who blew up and did it? Cashman or Steinbrenner? Both?

Apparently he had a degree from the "California University of Pennsylvania" or something like that... I dont blame Miller though, as much as I blame whoever hired him.

there actually is a california university of pa.

the guy hadn't worked with big league players before. he was cashman's hire. my guess is george demanded he be gone and cashman had no problem whacking him.

So, age old management question, did it mention if the Yanks have a replacement for the guy or if they were so pissed off they fired him anyway? I guess they could have the captain lead jumping jacks while they look for someone else. tongue.gif

They fired their Director of Performance Enhancement because he lost the beeper number of the guy that had the really good shit!

Ha. "Director of Performance Enhancement." That made me chuckle.

This was a long time coming... Pettitte and others had vocally complained to the media early in spring training about this guy.

Pettitte claimed his early season injury was a result of him not being able to do his regular workout regimen, IIRC.

I guess I don't know how that works, but why couldn't Pettitte do his regular workout regimen regardless of what a "performance enhancement" guy says or doesn't say?

I dont have the exact details, but the new strength coach had stopped the players from using their own workouts, and discouraged running and stretching. I get the feeling the players were on the verge of mutiny b/c of it. Pettitte had a very exact workout... I dont know the details and can't find a source, but they had tried to get him to do this one and he blamed the injury on it.

I mean... three starters have had hamstring injuries/tears now... maybe players arent buying into his plan, but whatever it is, it wasnt working.

I think it was more an issue of the team encouraging the players to try this guy's program... and you know, what's Pettitte going to do? Work out twice?

It's funnier if you look at the title as an acronym.

I'm pretty sure that Pettitte hurt his back by doing squats after being told to take off his weight belt because it would strengthen his mid section.

I'm glad the Yanks finally came to their senses and fired this guy, he never should have been hired in the first place.

Yep. Imagine some guy who has been out of baseball for ten years telling a starting pitcher with a long career like Pettite's to alter the workout routine he has used for a decade? What a knucklehead this guy sounds like. I don't think he'll be finding employment with another team any time soon.

The more I think about the Yanks hiring this guy the more upset I get. There's no reason to hire someone without MLB (or even MiLB) experience. The fact that veterans were tuning this guy out should have been a red flag. It's a joke that he lasted this long.

I can only hope that they bring him back to work out their minor league players like a roving health instructor.

I am sorry to see the yankees get rid of him.

Wow. Who did this guy report to and why didn't that person question these changes? One of those things you never think of (maybe you do more in football than in baseball) that can have a big impact.

I can understand why Yankees fans are upset about this guy, but not for the right reasons. His credentials aren’t the best—I absolutely grant that—but what people seem to forget is this Yankees team is old. The older one gets the more likely injuries are going to occur. Hughes’ injury was an aberration. This guy was training Hughes for all of a week. While it is possible that a new regiment facilitated the injury it’s pretty unlikely.

This trainer wasn’t a complete moron. He was correct in telling Pettitte to ditch the weight belt. Unless you are power lifting, which Pettitte obviously was not doing, you shouldn’t wear a weight belt. Using the belt reduced the use of stabilizer muscles and weakens, rather than strengthen the core muscles. Strengthening the core and stabilizer muscles lead to better overall strength and balance, which are obviously essential to an athlete’s performance.

I have a feeling that the problem was a combination of older veteran players who are very resistant to change and a trainer who didn’t know how to handle older professional athletes.
