Game time: 12:35 pm
Scheduled starters: Mike Maroth (3-0, 4.69) v. Julian Tavarez (1-4, 6.60)
The game will be on NESN.
Boston weather:
8 am observation at KBOS: Wind out of the northeast at 9 mph, visibility 10 miles, 700 feet overcast, temperature 46F, DP 43F.
Forecast:
There will be some sun in the afternoon, but it will stay cool, probably not much higher than 50F. The low and its associated cold front that dumped the rain on us yesterday is weakening over the Gulf of Maine, but is still contributing a northeast flow, so we'll have onshore winds for most of the day. It should be dry for the day game. The situation gets messy later on, because the front is going to stall offshore, and a low forming off NC will meet up with it and bring moisture with it. It's too early to know the exact track of that system, but we could be in for a wet couple of days.
If you are going to the day game, expect cool temperatures and the wind blowing in from left/center.

Just saw that Maroth has been scratched from the early game. I don't know why but the scheduled starter is now Zach Miner (
career stats) who hasn't pitched in the majors this year yet. In AAA he has a 5.57 ERA so far this year.
Finally found a link:
MLB.comQUOTE
Tigers: Miner was named a late replacement for Mike Maroth, who was scratched from the start Thursday because of illness.
Looking at his player page I noticed that he was involved in the trade with the Braves for Farnsworth a couple of years back.

Directv is still listing 12:30 as a Sox replay game - those games are always blacked out. I hope someone from the RedSox notified Directv of the change.

I suspect it's a matchup thing, but wouldn't have minded seeing WMP in given that Beerabelli is in the lineup for Varitek. The bottom of the lineup has anemic potential today.

Yeah, but I just can't understand not playing the guy with the potential and who might become a valuable piece for the team in the future. If we don't give Pena at bats with us having the best record in the majors, then when is he gonna get them?! Hope he plays tonight...

Guillen must've thought it was Lugo's birthday giving him that "gift." We'll take it!
We need to hammer this guy...shouldn't be relying on errors to get on base. Good to see Coco laying off the junk and making the rookie pitch.

I think you send him back out with a short leash. If he puts a man on...he should be done. No margin of error with a one run lead against the Detroit offense. Hopefully the sox can do a better job at the plate this inning and ease things up and give Tavarez some breathing room.
Nice shot Manny!
Actually, maybe they shouldn't run Tavarez back out if they want the option of running him out there on short rest next week.

The Yanks aren't "out" of the race yet IMHO. By the same token, two losses today, while that would be painful, wouldn't mean all that much in the standings, but would give the Yanks some unwelcomed motivation heading into the series w/ Boston next week.

Tavarez has more heart than, ah, Manny? In a contest of talent between the two, of course, there is none. Too bad we couldn't have more of a balance of the two characteristics between the two friends because both would be great ballplayers as a result.
