Since the "Yankee thread" is 220 pages long we should probably branch out some of the favorite topics
Arods a good place to start, some interesting points
-will he ever hit in the playoffs?
-will he stay in NY ?
-if he opts out where will he go?
-who's the blonde?
-does his wife know?
-does Jeter know?
-will he eventually overtake Bonds?
-if he comes to Boston can we still call him Slappy McBluelips?

-will he eventually overtake Bonds?

I hope that he just opts out at the end of the year. If the Yankees continue in their downfall and find themselves 15+ games back at the break, I see them trying to trade A-Rod. There will be a team out there, (Dodgers, Angels, etc..), that if still in contention, would give the Yankees some nice prospects for a 3 month rental of ARod. Shit, he could then resign with the Yankees in 2008 if he wanted to.

Already happeningedit: I hope we find out her name before this weekend's series. I'm sure the guys selling T-shirts outside Fenway do too.
From Canada, ey? Wonder if she & Hazel had their work done in the same shop? Judging from the pic run by the NY Post there appears to be some similarities in the craftsmanship.
edit2: I have no will power. I'm at work today but I had to check out the website for the 'Brass Rail' (the strip club A-Rod went to with forementioned blonde). Now A-Rod may be indirectly responsible for the loss of my job...or at least I'm going to blame him anyway....stupid A-Rod.

Since a certain Yankee fan thinks I'm obsessive about ARod, I guess I should chime in on this thread.
-will he ever hit in the playoffs?Yes. If the Dodgers/Angels/Marlins GET to the playoffs...
-will he stay in NY ?In other words, no. His behavior will be de rigueur in La La land or South Beach. But there's too many papparazzi of the wrong kind (unkind to him) in NYC.
-if he opts out where will he go?Wherever the dollars are. I answered that above, too.
-who's the blonde?Not his sister.
-does his wife know? She does now.
-does Jeter know?Jeter probably set them up.
-will he eventually overtake Bonds?Since (I believe) his goal is to get inducted into the HOF, I'd say no. He is already approaching first-ballot HOF credentials (500 HRs, for instance), so I think he'll get one last big contract and then call it quits....spend the rest of his life golfing, making appearances at autograph shows, and getting into acting.
-if he comes to Boston can we still call him Slappy McBluelips? As long as he stays in the AL, you'll see him in Boston maybe 18-19 times a season, no more. Even less, obviously, if he becomes a Dodger or Marlin. Or maybe I should answer that, "does he like the night life in Boston?"

I was actually thinking this very same thing. I would think it happens quite frequently. I, perhaps wrongfully, assumed that there was an unwritten rule among reporters to not report on the players’ extra-curricular activities unless it was über blatant.
I know there have been certain instances where an athlete’s love life becomes front page news, such as the case with Tom Brady, Derek Lowe, and Jeter, but those guys date or dated women that were already famous (or a local celebrity in Lowe’s case) in their own right. It looks like those unwritten rules, if they exist, don’t apply to A-Rod.

1) You have a point there, jackson...

2) I'm sure of it. However, 95% or so of them are smart enough to fly under the radar, or aren't superstars who'd be followed around by papparazzi anyway. After all, Wade Boggs did Margo for years before anybody caught on, partly because his teammates kept mum about it, and partly because he and she didn't flaunt it...at least until she sued him and told Penthouse about the whole affair...

Must be something in the water in Denver. I was in Jackson's Hole (a bar across the street from Coors Field) in the summer of 98 or 99 and there were a couple of players from the Cubs in the bar. One of the guys I was with recognized that one of the women was not the player's wife. (For some reason, he knew what she looks like.) I figured none of them were. At some point, the player bails with the woman and says "Don't wait up" to his teamate as he walks out.

What is he thinking? Last year he caused an uproar when he was photographed shirtless in Central Park on a hot day a few hours before a ball game and you think he would have learned that from that.
Not that I'm defending ARod, but it must be hard for guys to stay faithful on the road. I used to work overnights at the Copley Marriott and whenever basketball teams stayed there a flood of groupies would come and hang out at Champions to wait for the players to go there after the game. Some nights it seemed like there were 10-15 women for each player. I assume it's that way for most if not all pro teams when they travel on the road.

I was reading a few months back about Magic Johnson and his playing days, and how it's been 15 years since he announced he had HIV. There was a part that said when the Lakers would arrive at the hotel, he'd have so many women's numbers left for him, he would give out a stack to the other guys on the team. Someone who was a Lakers beat writer even said something in the article to the effect of "it was common to see a player walk by with someone who wasn't his wife, you just kept it quiet."

Unless of course that player was AC Green, in which case you would have a major scoop on your hands.
Or if that player was Kurt Rambis, in which case you'd at least be able to win some bar bets. That dude was like the Gustavo Chacin of white people in his playing days. Now he's all normal-looking, thanks to LASIK (and whatever brand razor he used to shave off the 'stache). It's disappointing, really.

From TMZ.com -
Today's NY Post cover story shows a pic of NY Yankee star Alex Rodriguez steppin' out on his wife with a mystery blonde. TMZ has learned that this is nothing new -- as he was with the SAME blonde in Las Vegas two weekends ago!
Sources in Las Vegas tell TMZ that the million-dollar slugger was at super hot nightclub Tryst at the Wynn Hotel on May 13, sitting at a table with his blonde companion. The two were living it up near the 90-foot waterfall, drinking two bottles of Grey Goose vodka.
Alex left the club around 2:00 AM, and sources tell us the two headed over to the Mirage the next day, where he and the blonde participated in a private event at the pool, featuring staff from Bare Lounge.
I just checked the schedule on the validity of this. The Yanks had played in Seattle on Sunday the 13th, had an off day on Monday, then a game in Chicago on the 15th which ended up being PPD.

yup and it's always been that way. always.
In MOntville's bio of Ted Williams, there's a passage about how, it must have been in the 1950s, one of their games went extra innings, but Ted was subbed out after 10. He dressed went back to the team hotel while the game was still going on, ran into the girlfriend of one of his own teammates and did her before the game ended.

there are a lot of stories that never get written about players and their dalliances. a famous one around the city of pittsburgh occurred in the early 1970s when second baseman dave cash had an affair with pitcher steve blass's wife. the pirates traded cash away because he had buried himself with his teammates. blass, at the same time, suddenly lost his control and was out of the game within a few years.

Didn't see it, but on the way home I was switching back and forth between the Sox-Tribe and Jays-Yanks on XM, and the Toronto guys seemed pretty disgusted by A-Rod's bush league play tonight.
Evidently he yelled something, presumably "I got it" at the Toronto 3b, as he was preparing to catch a pop up. The 3b backed off, the pop up fell for a single, and the Yanks got 3 runs after that.
For a guy that is supposedly the Best Player In The Game, he sure seems to pull a lot of Beer League horse shit. The Slap, of course. Really? I'd be embarrassed that we were so lame that we had to resort to crap like that. You can do a lot of things to win a game, but that doesn't necessarily mean you should do them.
I'm judging this on the categorical imperative, or whatever the hell Kant called it: if this one action were universalized, would it still be good? The answer is no. Can you imagine the hellhole fly balls would be come if all baserunners started doing this? Nick Johnson-type incidents would become a weekly occurrence.

Torre and ARod said after the game that ARod yelled Ha! when McDonald was trying to catch the ball. If you can't catch a ball with someone saying Ha! behind you, then maybe you shouldn't be playing in the major leagues.
It's similar to a runner, as he rounds 3rd, yelling "Cut it!" and hoping the ball gets cut off before it reaches home so there's no play at the play. It's the responsibility of the other team not to fall for it.

What possible reason would he yell "Ha!" BEFORE the ball landed/wasn't caught? You'd think that's what he'd yell if he'd already fooled the guy. Sounds to me like Torre and ARod are covering up for what he really did yell, the aforementioned "I got it!". But I don't know why they'd feel compelled to cover up, because...
It's part of the game. I don't find what I
think ARod is supposed to have yelled all that bothersome. Not any more than a catcher trapping a foul-tipped ball against his chest protector and transferring it to his glove to show the umpire. Or the hidden-ball trick by a 2B. Or stealing signs.

I just saw the replays on SC and he definitely didn't yell" I got it!". It was a one syallable word, but I'm not a lip reader so I have no idea if it was ha, mine or whatever.
I agree it's part of the game, I'm surprised the Jays reacted the way that they did -- sitting in the dugout and staring out on the field after the Yanks won. It seems to be like they are sick of losing (like the Yanks) and looking for a scapegoat.

the story of the game over at ESPN.com (just now), it probably was "Mine!", not "Ha!" or a phrase. I guess what really bothers everybody is ARod's behavior AFTER he deaked the Jays. He stood on the bag and smirked.
Like you say, the story is that the Jays players stayed in their dugout instead of filing into their locker room, giving ARod and the Yanks "the evil eye" (my words).
If there's anything to come of this in future Yanks/Blue Jay games, there's plenty of opportunity -- a series right after the All-Star Break and in late September (although they're in YS), and a series in early August and mid-September in Toronto.

Here is a link to the story from tsn.ca. Supposedly A-Rod yelled "Mine", which caused the third baseman, who was settled under the ball to make the catch, move out of the way, presumably to let shortstop John MacDonald make the play.

Mike in CT over at that other place had an interesting point, possibly the most telling point of all in this ARod Yell controversy:

"It doesn't matter much. The Yankees would have won the game anyways, but it's an interesting topic. I believe the last guy who was caught doing this was AJ Pierzienski... which says alot in itself."

seriously now, don't you think there are a few guys on every team who cheat on their wives while the writers look the other way?
Pfftt.......A few?
Saying that a lot of baseball players cheat on their wives is like saying that the sun comes up in the east. About as newsworthy as well.
