I didnt want to start a new thread, but I dont know where this goes.
According to Rotoworld.com and
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/wh...T-dye04.articleAccording to the Chicago Sun-Times, the White Sox and Yankees have discussed a trade that would swap Jermaine Dye for Bobby Abreu.
Why the hell would the White Sox do that? Abreu has been awful.

That can't be right. Abreu has been terrible and has half a year left. I thought the Chi Sox would be looking to add value or at least shop him for the future? This deal makes 0 sense.
MFYfans.com wet dreams thats all.

I don't see what's so unbelievable about this talk. Both players are hitting like .220 and are in the final year of their deals. Of course Abreu makes 7 mil more then Dye, but I'm assuming the Yankees would eat some money. I’m not saying Kenny Williams should do it. But are we to assume Abreu’s skills have declined and Dye is just slumping?

This is a probably because the White Sox lineup is too righty heavy. Other than Thome and Pierzynski, they don't really have anyone else. Both players have expiring deals, only Abreu has a team option for 2008. Add to that, Jermaine Dye hasn't been very good this year either.

If that is smart reasoning, we should be trying to get rid of Drew and Lugo. Same with Pujols and Ryan Howard with their respective teams.

It'd have to be a ton of money for it to make sense for Chicago. A ton... Like $10M+ money.

and the yankees could use a righty hitter to balance their own lineup.
sometimes a trade like this is a boost for both slumping players.

Besides the fact Dye is making less money lets look at what else makes this a bad deal.
Dye:
AVG .228 | HR 10 | RBI 29 | OBP .294 | SLG .434
Abreu:
AVG .244 | HR 2 | RBI 22 | OBP .331 | SLG .316
Dye may be sucking just as hard when it comes to BA/OBP but Dye still has average power. Abreu has nothing going for him. To add to that I'm not quite sure about Dye's defense but Abreu has been terrible (minus last night's game). Dye was a candidate for the MVP award. You have to think at some point he'll turn it around. Also, i'm sure Dye would command a better draft pick than Abreu.

Dye and Abreu are formerly productive players of the same age (though the White Sox are getting slightly more out of Dye right now) with expiring contracts who are a better fit for each team, when and if they come out of their respective slumps. Perhaps they feel a change scenery would be beneficial.
The bottom line is that if the clubs have no plans of retaining the players in question, it is of no major consequence either way.

I think the White Sox may very well consider retaining Abreu.
1) Abreu's option, while expensive, is only a one year commitment, something they can't do with Dye. The alternative is calling up a kid or trading/signing an OF - which to get someone of Abreu/Dye's quality would require a considerable investment either in terms of prospects/assets or dollars and years.
2) They dont have any decent OFers close to the majors - Cunningham is far away, theyre down on Brian Anderson
3) Abreu is from the same country as Ozzie, and an Ozzie favorite.
4) As has been mentioned, the lefty righty concerns make sense
5) At this point in the year youre only on the hook for 1/3 of the contract, and as to next year; I wouldnt be surprised if the Yankees threw in cash
6) Both teams are stuggling and their GMs might be looking to shake things up...

But Dye is a better player who has still shown some power. Abreu has shown no positives thus far. Also, if the White Sox offered arb to Dye as opposed to Abreu, I'm sure that Dye would command a better draft position. I'd rather try and get Damon who seems to be plagued with injuries.
