Red Sox Promote New

Former Mercer baseball ace Brantley New has been promoted to the Greenville (S.C.) Drive of the South Atlantic League.

The hard-throwing right-hander, who was drafted in the 27th round by the Boston Red Sox following the 2006 season, posted a 2-0 record in a four-week stint with the Lowell (Mass.) Spinners of the New York-Penn League.

"I have been pitching well," said New.

"But I was a little surprised that I am getting moved up so quickly. I really thought it would be a little later. I have been getting ahead in the count and throwing strikes and that makes the job a lot easier."

New posted a sterling 0.90 ERA in four appearances with the Spinners, throwing 10 innings in middle relief and surrendering just six hits and two walks while striking out five batters.

New joins another former A-Sun hurler on the Greenville staff, Josh Papelbon, who played collegiate baseball at North Florida.

I just wanted to point out that Brantley New is now being listed as Charles New on the Greenville Drive website and milb.com. Brantley is his middle name. I have no idea which name New goes by in real life or in the press media, but I just thought I would point it out since the practice of minor league baseball players changing their first names always causes more confusion than it is worth. I absolutely hate that practice, by the way. Pick a name, and go by it.
