As of 8/25 we have successfully moved to the new server. If you registered between 7/19 and then, please re-register as we lost a months worth of data from the old server. But everything seems to be running well in the first few days of operation.

Just in time for the Yanks series, which is usually a server-crusher!

Thanks!

All your work trying to get things back online is greatly appreciated. It was a long couple of days at work trying to find things to do while the site was down. Hopefully that won't be a problem for the rest of the week.

Now that you've rectified the server issue, could you help me address the alarming amount of blood in my stool?
coloradojack
darn it (<--pun).....it seems i've lost one of my socks in this mess....

edit: i thought it was rather obvious....

and, oh yea, thanks for bust'n balls to get the site back up again PSF (double thanks for dumping that "panic" thread)....

Thanks for all the effort PSF.

FYI, This isn't a big deal but I thought I'd let you know something I noticed. When you bring up a list of topics I don't think the "views" column is working correctly. In Anni's newslinks it has the views at 0.

That's a CPU-saving setting. The views will update every six hours, I think... Also, you'll note that the people in each thread are not listed at the bottom of the page. These things save a query when you open a page. I'm sure PSF will set it all back to "normal" once the new server is on line, but right now we can't take any chances in another overload.

Ironically enough, the thing is running like a dream right now.

The bad news is I just found out they are out of the server I ordered. The good news is I get a free upgrade to the next processor up (Clovertown 5320) for no extra.

I SHOULD have the login info tonight or tomorrow to start moving things over. I'm also going to take the opportunity to do a clean install of the newest invision board (not too many changes; mostly performance from what I've read) when we move.

EDIT: When it rains, it pours. Just when the server gets working again, I was the victim of a brute force attack. The software I had to prevent such a thing was not re-installed when the drive was formatted yesterday morning.

I appreciate the thought, but no. RSN has been hosting-charge free for over a year now, mainly thanks to the Google ads. I have a small amount of other paying customers on the server that makes up the difference, and gives me a pretty much break-even hosting operation (it is, after all, just a hobby for me).

The new server will cost me a little bit more a month, but I use it for some personal stuff as well.

For the geeks out there I currently have a dual core Pentium 4 with 1 gig RAM and dual 160 gig hard drives. We're moving to a Xeon quad-core with 2 gigs ram and dual 250 gig hard drives. And a 100mbps port instead of a 10 mbps port.

Wow, wondered what the hell was up.

Thanks for the effort, PSF.

I'm not a computer geek but it sure sounds like we'll be ready for the playoffs. Thanks PSF

Thanks for getting us back up and running PSF....will the new server have a link to the chat room on the toolbar alongside calender, members, search, etc?

Xeon Quad core, nice, what it running for GHz? What you running for an OS? You still on XP or you move over to Vista. If you got 2 gigs on XP then the server should fly. The dual 250s is a nice touch and you'll have plenty of space for old fart bitch fests.

Why not go with 3 hard drives and set up a raid 5 array. Would improve performance and help backup data at the same time...

This isn't a server at my house; it is at a NOC. OS is CENTOS/Linux.

See above. Adding a 3rd drive and having them install RAID 5 would be an additional $105.....a month.

Ahhh thats odd I'm surprised it would be more /month, since in the end its less maintainence costs for them...

The big step up is the 100Mbps port. 10Mbps for a site like this (among all the others hosted on the server) must have been a bottleneck from hell, although the other upgrades are a nice touch too. Quad core Xeon, now you're just showing off. wink.gif
