Game time: 7:05 pm EDT

Scheduled starters: Jesse Litsch (5-6, 3.40) v. Daisuke Matsuzaka (13-11, 3.88)

The game will be on NESN.

Boston weather: 2 pm observation at KBOS: wind out of the west at 13 mph with gusts to 23 mph, visibility 10 miles, few clouds at 6,500 feet, temperature 85F, DP 56F.

Forecast: Another perfect late summer night... High pressure is dominating. There is a weak cold front approaching from the northwest, and with the high offshore, we've got some gusty winds out of the west right now, and they're likely to continue into the evening. The air is just too dry for any rain, and the only thing we're going to see after frontal passage later tonight is slightly cooler air and a slight wind shift.

A west wind blows out, so keep the ball DOWN, Daisuke!

Is anyone else having problems with the Sox game on MLB EI? It is the only channel out of all 14 that is not coming in for me. It says "Channel not available." This really pisses me off.

He's had something like 11 strikeouts in his past 20 AB. I imagine Tito decided he needed a major breather.
BillyJo
1st and 3rd, Drew up.

Strikeout or DP?

It's one or the other with this guy.

EDIT - woohoo! Sac Fly!

I have it on both 623 and 742.

WOW, this team just looks awesome right now.
Makes me wonder where Cashman and Torre would be now if we played like this against the MFY.

The Red Sox are currently navigating through some rough waters. Last Tuesday, Manny left the game with a strained oblique and has not returned since. That is a huge part of the batting order. Kielty went down with back stiffness in the same game. Later in the week, Wakefield missed his start with a sore back, and then Drew missed a couple games after fouling a ball off his foot. But the youngsters have responded and it's been exciting to watch, and the Sox have rebounded since the sweep in Yankee Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Rocket looked not good today. The Yankees are reeling since their sweep. It's hard to figure. As for Cashman and Torre, I suspect at least Cashman will be OK if the Yankees make the playoffs. I think Torre might have to go to the World Series in order to return.

Sox lead 5-1. Let's go Dice-K!

Personally, I think if we had swept them instead of them sweeping us, and the Rays took 2 out of 3 as they did, both were going to be collecting unemployment right now.
I don't think it's too hard to figure why they're reeling... At some point it makes you wander what exactly you have to do to catch up. They've been playing very well after the ASB, swept us, and still...
Oh, well. I don't really care, as long as we keep playing the way we play tonight.

When Manny comes back I want Ellsbury starting and Drew on the bench.

Two at bats, two RBIs for Drew.

This is a fun one tonight.

I think that Pedroia is going to take Nixon's spot in the fans' hearts as a real dirt dog. That kid is not blessed with size, but he is a passionate player who makes the very most of the talent he has. Ellsbury looks to be an exciting player with speed that can be game-changing at times. That 1-2 tandem should set the table for the middle of the order for many years to come. The question I have is who is going to go to make room for Ellsbury? Crisp has 2 years left on his contract, and Drew has 4 more years. Where is he going to play? Center in 2009 with Crisp moving to left? That is not a very powerful outfield. But we will cross that bridge when we come to it.

IMO, Crisp is trade bait at the end of the year.

I tend to agree. I like Coco. He's played a tremendous CF, and we've seen flashes of the hitter he was in Cleveland, which is kind of frustrating.
Drew's contract makes him unmoveable, and although moving Manny'd contract is more palatable than it once was - what's he have 2 years left? - I don't think the Red Sox are prepared to give up on his production.
Coco is the obvious one to go.

JD Drew is going to be a monster next year. Bank on it.

Five runs through 5 is not a quality start. However, the offense owed him one.

Manny has one year left in 2008 on his contract, and the Red Sox have team options in 2009 and 2010. I agree if the Red Sox are ready to go with Ellsbury, Coco is the one who will have to go.

Quickly, the Jays have cut the lead to 10-5. I wonder if Matsuzaka is starting to get tired with the workload he's had this year? He used to pitch only once a week in Japan, and he's already reached the total number of starts he would have had in Japan.
Cheap Char
More and more I feel Dice-K is not a winner. He usually pitches well enough to lose. Tonight, he's up 10-1 and now it's 10-5.
BillyJo
C'mon, Tito, make the move.

I'll tell you what I think is one more thing to bank on, and that is the Alex Rodriguez opt-out saga. Once the Yankees play their final game this season, whenever that may be, the media attention is going to turn to the opt-out possibility, and I think it is going to be fascinating.

I think Drew could rebound in 2008 if what we are seeing this year is related to a injury problem of some sort and he will be completely healthy next year.

Well, Dice-K exits and not a moment too soon....

I think Coco will be on the trade block. He has a very reasonable contract (unlike Drew), so he is the easy guy to move. Many teams would want a CF with excellent range, good speed, and a decent bat.

Manny has 1 year left (2008), then 2 team options are available (2009, 2010) if the Red Sox want to use them. Given Manny's drop in offensive production this season, I have serious doubts on whether the Sox will pick up his options. In fact, I had serious doubts about the Sox picking up the options even if Manny has a MVP season next year.

The Sox have some serious potential to drop their payroll next season without effecting their production much. Schilling, Lowell, Clement, Tavarez all go off the books. Coco could be traded. In comes Ellsbury, Buchholz, Lester, and a free agent 1B or 3B (maybe Lowell is resigned).

Up until this inning, I really wasn't too concerned with Dice-K. He's had problems in recent starts against Tampa Bay (at Fenway), and then at the Toilet last week. One outing was bad, and the other was just one of those "good, but not good enough" games.

Suddenly, after tonight's performance (I think we can agree that 5.1 innings, 10 hits, 1 walk, only 3 Ks is NOT good), I am worried. With a big lead, he should have been able to get us into the 7th.

What is so frustrating is that he was cruising through several middle innings, but then exploded in the 6th.

I remember the 10-0 lead we blew against Toronto in '89.

Now we are a bleeder or blooper away from blowing a 10-1 lead.

This is quite embarrassing.

What in his career lends to think that, other than wishful thinking. Hell he's even quite a bit past the magical age of 27. I'm just wondering because I've been behind Drew most of the year, but I've lost faith in the man this year.. waste of $14m.
