Game time: 7:05 pm EDT

Scheduled starters: Scott Kazmir (11-8, 3.79) v. Curt Schilling (8-6, 4.04)

The game will be on NESN.

Boston weather:

4 pm observation at KBOS: wind out of the east at 8 mph, visibility 9 miles, overcast at 1,100 feet, temperature 65F, DP 59F.

Forecast: A stationary front is stalled off the south coast, and we've got a cool flow off the ocean bringing in low clouds and possibly fog later on. It'll be in the 60's with a raw east wind, which is blowing in. There's only a slight chance of rain; the marine layer is only about 2,000 feet thick, but the cool air is keeping the rain that's out west from reaching the coast.

Ortiz with the night off, per Globe:

One option for a unbiased manager would be to play Moss in LF, as he's had some success vs. LHP this year, shift Ellsbury to CF, and give Crisp a night off in the field.

Here's what Tito put out:

Julio Lugo, DH
Coco Crisp, CF
Dustin Pedroia, 2B
Mike Lowell, 3B
Bobby Kielty, RF
Kevin Youkilis, 1B
Jason Varitek, C
Jacoby Ellsbury, LF
Alex Cora, SS

I'd rather see Clayton. Seriously.

Nevermind, Edes told me this morning the Sox are 34-14 when Cora starts. Carry on!
Preacher
Looks like Tito is mailing this one in. I'd still rather DH Ortiz with LHP as he'd be more likely to draw a walk than either Lugo or Cora. At least Drew is sitting against the lefty.
bosockboy
Unfortunately, I'm expecting a lot of bunting and small ball with that lineup. Not much of a choice, though. Schill's gonna have to be pretty good tonight.
Preacher
I just hope this is one of those game where Tito, disregarding conventional wisdom, puts together this scrappy lineup that some how manages to score 8 runs. It could happen.

I smell conspiracy.
MLB should investigate Tito to see if he's on the take from Fox. They’d want nothing more than see the Yanks pull a few games closer befor Saturday’s game which they’re carrying.....anything to help their ratings.

Fox = bastards
Cheap Char
That is an awful lineup.

The worst Red Sox lineup I can think of in recent years.

Of course now that I said that, we'll score 15 runs.

banghead.gif Ugh, other Scott Kazmir match up! This has to be 3rd time We had to face him this year! too bad We couldnt dodge a bullet by not facing Kazmir!

Per the Globe his knee is bothering him again and Kazmir owns him....who knows, maybe they know what they are doing.

FINALLY! The blackout is over... I get to watch the Sox again. I hate when they play Baltimore or Atlanta!

We've beaten him twice this year, he's beaten us once.

I'm not sure if I even want to watch this game. That lineup is just ugly. I would rather see Clayton and Moss. Why the hell is Jacoby hitting 8th?
Jermaine Van Buren Fan
But just imagine if Coco got on! He would've caused three balks!
Leephus Pitch
Anyone else sense an incredible lack of intensity in this game?
bosockboy
Schill could turn himself into the RH version of Boomer...less velocity but pinpoint control. I doubt he comes back, because an NL team will give him at least 2 years, but he could be very effective in the NL for 2-3 years.

Let's just hope he's got one more Herculean postseason run left in that arm, and that those 6 weeks off keep him strong through October.
Jermaine Van Buren Fan
Crisp is a pathetic offensive player. Awful.
SFFM38
UGH, This line up is brutal to watch!!!! I really want to see this team going 6 games up while MFY are idling tonight!
Yaz888
CBS Sportsline's Gamecast shows Schilling threw a 98 mph heater to Pena. True?

I was just about to ask what Schills fast ball looked like... somehow I doubt 98.

Anyone?
carita
No way

Only 91
SFFM38
^^^^ 98?? no way and I am watching it alot tonight, its probably a typo 98 reversed it to 89 and now that sounds right.. mostly its between 86-90 so far and a few times it did registered at 91.
Jermaine Van Buren Fan
That play just earned Cora three more starts.
Ralpho316
We need to get Kazmir outta there, what the hell was that Youk
TommyK8
Joe Maddon reminds me of Uncle Junior.

Schilling's fastball is 89-91. He's throwing lots of offspeed pitches. That was a tremendous at bat by Norton who battled Schilling for a 10 pitch at bat before lining a double just out of the reach of Ellsbury in left.

Jermaine Van Buren Fan
Oh **** that.
SFFM38
Schill is about to crap the pants for this Inning, so I am hoping for Tito to start warming up some of people in BP that we can actually use.. 1 for MDC,1 for Clay, 1 for Timlin, etc
BillyJo
The headline on MLB.Com:

"Sox Not Taking Division Lead For Granted"

Then you take a look at our line-up eek.gif
DesertDirtDog
Nice Pitch!
TommyK8
I think Schilling has pitched very well, but the pitch count is up to 89 after 5 innings, and I think he may be through for the night.

The Red Sox need to get to Kazmir here.
BamaBoSox
Is it just me, or has Scott Kazmir delivered more pitches to the Red Sox than our batting practice pitcher?

We seem to be facing this guy every other day.
Ralpho316
Shes kinda cute, get rid of Tina for her
Jermaine Van Buren Fan
So pumped to have Cora hit here. Who needs Moss?
MFLetou
Do they always have to do this extra curricular stuff---like have the blood drive lady on--DURING a Red Sox at bats? Can't they wait till the D-Rays are up?
Jermaine Van Buren Fan
Ellsbury?
BamaBoSox
Schilling's up to 99 pitches.

For those of us not in New England and without the NESN, do we have anyone warming up? I'd be surprised (well, no I wouldn't) to see Curt return to the mound in the 7th.

One run on five hits? Props to him.
DesertDirtDog
How about scoring a few to help Schill out, eh? banghead.gif

I believe Corey is warming. I'd prefer he come in, but I can pretty much guarantee Schilling will be back out there.

Die Jim Duquette.
BillyJo
Damn, Kazmir is really on tonight. He's up to 96 pitches, but I bet he'll be back out for the 7th.
BamaBoSox
Just like that, we turn it over to a guy who hasn't thrown a pitch in the majors since 2002?

I would say "Thank God for Tampa Bay" in this situation, but then I was reminded of the score. This inning is more than crucial.
Jermaine Van Buren Fan
Wow. Props to Tito for lifting Schilling - still no excuse for the lineup.
Bergs
Nice job by Corey.

Still a dumb move.

Lifting a 40 year-old with a recent shoulder problem after 99 pitches?
Ralpho316
Corey pitched last year in the majors, who said he had not pitched since 2002?
BamaBoSox
Kielty singles. Finally, a freaking baserunner.

Let's get some runs, Sox!
Ralpho316
Youkilis is absolutely terrible, I cant get over how much I hate him.

He should have bunted
BillyJo
Wow - Youks bitches at EVERYTHING.

He's worse than Jeter and Papi. At least those two can actually hit the ball.

Brainfart on my part at 8:05.

I was reading an obviously outdated article.

Ralpho316
Well we will probably have a year off of Kazmir eventually, once the Devil Rays drive him into the ground and he needs TJ surgery
