I'm going to be out of town all day, so I figured I'd start this early seeing I forgot to check to see if someone would start it... And an early game thread is better than none at all....
Game time: 7:07 pm EDT
Scheduled starters: Jon Lester (4-0, 4.06) v. A.J. Burnett (8-7, 3.42)
The game will be on NESN.
It looks like decent weather, with high pressure dominating. It'll be in the low 50's by game time, but they'll probably keep the roof open, which is what they did on Monday night.

Come on Sox, please win a freaking game. Pitching around Thomas might help.

I'm starting to think our 2007 team is not that good. That lineup last night was a disgrace. We need Manny back ASAP. We should have won 2 of 3 against NYY, with a shot at 3 of 3. Instead the lead is now 3.5 and I'm getting sweaty.

I guess because the Sox are usually chasing the Yankess this feels different. But we are 3.5 up and I'm starting to feel as though we are about done. It's wierd. We are 3.5 up with 11 games left and I don't feel good about it.

The Yankees are the better team guys, no matter what the standings say or whatever, even if we win the division and maybe the World Series. The Yankees are the better team, we just hafta deal with it.

IF the Sox win the divison and IF they somehow win the WS, I don't believe it is fesible to say they are a better team. The only argument you could make are the head-to-head matchups, but even than would you say Balitmore is a better team than NY? If the Red Sox win both, going through the Yankees or not, the Red Sox would be the better team.
I can't wait for Jacoby to get benched when Manny comes back

Thank god no Crisp. I think Moss can do an OK job if he is allowed to play. Crisp is one dead-bat that needs to be removed. I wish the Sox called up Kots to give Varitek more "rest". Kots may not be ready by any means but I think he can get 1 hit over a 7 day span.

Wells led off with a quick walk. Johnson fanned swinging, and then Rios went with an outside pitch and hit a line drive down the right field line for a double that scored Wells. Thomas dropped a soft single in front of Drew, but Rios stopped at third. Hill chopped one to third, and Lowell gunned down Rios at the plate. Stairs walked and Zaun took a called strike three. I would say that Lester was not hit very hard, but again was behind in the counts and the walks hurt him.

I think he was trying to see if the first inning would be indicative of future troubles, which would be much more likely if the balls were hit hard.

The results will be self-evident. The best team will be the one that wins.
To say otherwise goes against performance, like saying the 2001 Rams were better than the Patriots. During the season, maybe. But on the particular day they played? No.

It cannot be argued that the Yankees are not playing better baseball right now, because they certainly are. And there is no question that the Division is still in play. If it were not for 2004, I would be absolutely convinced that the Red Sox were going to blow it. I'm still not so sure, but I don't think it's inevitable.
As for who is the better team, I want to withhold judgment until we get Manny back and Youkilis and get our starters and relievers healthy, rested, and aligned.
I believe that if Lester can keep us in this game, we are going to find a way against A.J. Burnett.
