Game time: 5:00 pm EDT
Scheduled starters: Joe Blanton (14-10, 3.84) v. Jon Lester (4-0, 4.45)
The game will be on NESN.
Boston weather:
Noon observation at KBOS: Wind out of the southwest at 13 mph, visibility 9 miles, few clouds at 20,000 feet, temperature 88F, DP 66F.
Forecast: Another warm night at the old ballyard. It'll be more humid than last evening, and there's a chance of some gusty winds out of the southwest, which is blowing out toward left. There's a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms associated with a trough that is ahead of a cold front approaching from the northwest. There's some convection firing over the Adirondacks now; most likely the convective activity will stay north of the Boston area.
It'll be close to 90F at game time, and with the early game, we'll have another two hours of sun and some heating, so the winds are not likely to diminish until late in the game.

God I wished I'd checked a weather report before I left South Jersey. I brought a jacket just in case, but never considered shorts. I'll be the guy sweating his ass off in jeans in Secion 10.

I think Boston has places called stores. In those stores, I think they sell shorts. This time of year, I'd think those stores would have clearance sales for shorts.

Yankee losses are one of life's unexpected pleasures. But we no longer have to worry about them in terms of the division race. Win this afternoon/tonight and the magic number is two.
EDIT: I was agahst to see what I'd written. Yankee LOSSES are a pleasure. Mea culpa.

It appears that Jon is staying up with the heat, though. Five strikeouts in just two innings?

Actually, it is possible. Word is Victor Conte has been trying to market his "pogo stick" steroid here as of late. Maybe Shannon Stewart took him up on it?

Following on game day, so the line looks o.k.--3 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 bb, 6 k's. How does Lester look--how's his location?
Now if we can just get some runs here. Time for the bats to wake up.

Lowell's probably gone, but every day he makes me want to keep him. Just an unbelievable year. As well as he is hitting cleanup, I wonder if keeping Manny in the 2-hole might be the trick for the postseason, giving him tons of pitches to hit in front of Papi.

So is Lester the Matt Young of this generation (great stuff, no command)? Or is he going to learn how to throw his pitches someday?
He's not short on potential, that's for sure. But he could end up anywhere from a #2 to a #5. No idea. None.

I think he settles as a 4 or 5 in Boston with a low to mid 4 ERA every year. This settles any doubt regarding him and the postseason though. We just saw his last pitch of 2007.

Also, did Youkilis K on a pitch that was that far in the dirt or is it an error with CBS' GameCenter? It had the pitch location icon drowning in red clay.

I think he's going to be closer to a 5 ERA than 4 until he resolves the control issues (4.45 BB/9) and big flyball tendencies (.68 G/F).
Who knows what this offseason will hold for him, though...

Definitely not consistent enough for the postseason. Would be comforting to see either Wake or Dice-K throw a good game before October.
Lester definitely looks like a 4 or 5 if he's going continue to need 100 pitches to get through 5, as has pretty much been the norm for him. But man. 9 K tonight. Better than 6 K/9 on the year. He's got the stuff to be better. He just never seems to get in a groove of knowing where that good stuff is going for more than 2-3 batters at a time. Much more frustrating to watch than watching a guy who just isn't very good.

I don't understand pulling Snyder at all when he just threw a few wicked curves to the last batter he faced...once he has that pitch going, he's a solid pitcher.
Lopez hasn't looked good lately.
