How do Yankees fans listen to this woman 162 times a year?

"Well Suzyn, um...(is she really ****ing crying????????)...in life...(oh my god she's crying)..."

This has to be a record for "most embarassing moments by a broadcaster in a calendar year."

Congrats to Marv Alberts.

As for Tim McCarver... well, the year isnt over yet.

I couldn't even get all the way through that. Not even because of her case of acute sniffles. Just the funereal tone of the entire thing.

A little nostalgia would have been fine. Torre definitely was more than a bit nostalgic in his postgame comments. But the whole, "The world doesn't make any sense anymore, all because of things that might not even happen"...maybe just a wee bit over the top, unprofessional, and annoyingly pathetic. No thanks.

Did you guys hear Colin Cowherd tear Suzyn Waldman up again tonight? I love it so much.

"Well Suzyn, in life all good things come to an end."

It's like he's telling her where her pet goldfish is going when they flush it down the toilet.

"It was a 'great' season."

Dear God. Congratulations to the first team in history with a $200 million dollar payroll to "overachieve".

Don't worry, Suzyn. Joe isn't being fired. He's is going off to a farm with fresh air and sunshine, and apple trees. And there'll be lots of puppies and kittens to play with. And rabbits. You like rabbits. Maybe you can visit and he'll let you tend to the rabbits.

Waldman must agree:

While I can empathize with her emotion, her conduct as a broadcast journalist is embarrassing and unacceptable to me as a listener. However, I'd take 1,000 Suzyn Waldman-called games over a John Sterling-called game, as he offends every fiber of my baseball being.

That being said, her teary-voiced wrapup last night gave me fits of glee.

I just listened to the whole thing through, and once again I think Sterling just didn't know what to say.

Then he came out as if he were her grandfather, consoling her. Think she'll last?

I'd like to make this into a bumper sticker, how this team can constantly be painted as underdogs is beyond belief.

Unbelieveable and totally unprofessional.

And the best part is, you don't get to choose between Suzyn and John Sterling...you get them BOTH. Yee Haw.

What a laughingstalk.

Remy wouldn't cry. Joe Castig wouldn't cry. Hell...any professional broadcaster with a pulse wouldn't cry.

God Waldman...get over yourself.

I guess we just can't understand the level of sorrow she's feeling right now.

GOODNESS GRACIOUS.

I can't believe I bought a video with Suzyn Waldman singing over the closing credits.

At least Sherm Feller wrote the song....

I think we're all lucky there wasn't another "A-bomb for A-Rod"!!!

Let me take a crack at this one, from Suzyn's perspective. She's 60 years old and has invested the last 20 years of her life in following the Yankees. Somewhere in the late 1990s she morphed from journalist to unabashed admirer of Torre, Jeter, Bernie, Rivera and company. They became her life. Remember, she lives by herself with her two German Shepherds. And even though she once sang on Broadway in Man From La Mancha, she doesn't have much else going on except the Yankees and her dogs. And now she's watching the end of Joe Torre, which is like a death in the family to her. So she gets a little emotional, like a lot of people do when they get older and start appreciating their own mortality. She cries and once again everyone laughs at her. Just another story in The Naked City. snooze.gif

I'm tempted to give Suzyn a pass, because I think I understand where she's coming from. But I'll tell you why I can't. Listening to as many Yankee games as I do down here in Fairfield County, I can tell you that Suzyn Waldman NEVER misses any opportunity to take a shot at the Red Sox and their fans. When the Yankees swept the Red Sox last year in the Boston Massacre II, the glee in her voice was evident and she did not miss the chance to tap dance on the 2006 Red Sox grave. I, on the other hand, have not done the same to the 2007 Yankees' sepulchre, and I have intentionally laid low since the Yankees were declared dead sometime around 11:40 p.m. last night. I did not want anyone to be able to accuse me of rubbing it in to the Yankees' ardent fans. Many Red Sox fans (not all), have shown similar restraint and sportsmanship. So, yeah, Suzyn needs to keep it under control. She can't cry on the air. 29 teams in baseball are going home unhappy at some point this year, and their announcers are not going to cry on the air.
Sox Sweep Again
Waldman is emotionally invested in her team, that's the deal, fine.

But I have heard her derision for the Sox come through strongly... "Oooh, here we go against Daisuke Matsuzaka, he has like 80 pitches, this will be tough, Yankee fans..."

So it's okay for me to hate her, and enjoy the shadenfreude of her loss.

So what you're saying, basically, is that she has reached an age at which she is no longer competent to do her job. thumbsup.gif

nah. 60 isn't old. she was a good beat reporter for WFAN who got overpromoted into a job as color commentator that does not suit her skills. her biggest mistake was falling in love with the team.

the new york herald-tribune of the 1940s and 1950s had a great sports editor named stanley woodward who used to rotate his beat writers because they all fell in love with the brooklyn dodgers. roger kahn was one of them. they switched him off the dodgers beat in 1952 and put him on the yankees, who he had hated all his life. eventually, of course, kahn wrote "boys of summer" about his two seasons covering the dodgers.

my point is, a lot of journalists and announcers get close to their teams. suzyn went overboard. i could get into a thing about women commentators at this point, sidelines or in the booth, but that would be PI on my part. mellow.gif

I'd much rather she cry at the Yankees demise than have a big "O" like she had when Roger was announcing his return. Still, I am disappointed in announcers overall, they should not be hired by MLB or the teams. Journalism has went down the pot bigtime over the last 30 years.

PS Remy hawking his wares is also disgusting as is Don's giggling like a schoolgirl. We don't have a lot of room to be critical here.

I agree that the Red Sox TV Broadcast has become too silly at times...apparently because the RemDog has become some kind of cult hero or something, and now he's President of the ridiculous Red Sox Nation. This is going to lead to even more silliness I fear next year.

Castiglione keeps the Red Sox radio broadcast on the up and up, but the rotation this year with Geffner and O'Brien led to some horrific broadcasts.
john dopson
how sad is it that, at least in that clip, John Sterling is the level-headed voice of reason, keeping it all in perspective?

Yes, but announcers are not now and never have been journalists. I'll give her that. But there is an assumption of professional detachment that should exclude crying. I can accept the bullshit Remy/Orsillo stuff (although the Red Sox Nation presidency went over the line), and basic homerism like that annoying Hawk Harrelson.

But Waldman crossed the line. This isn't Guiding F*cking Light.
JMDurron
Since Waldman is technically the color commentator, does this make a potential Hawk-Suzyn combo as the worst potential broadcast duo ever?

In essence they are, they are reporting the action on the field live instead of paper or internet media. I can still name a couple of oldtimers in Philidelphia and in Los Angeles who provide information on the team yet still show some class and dignity.

I thought Gary Thorne was of the old school mode, but he even let me down.

Waldmyn can choke on a bowl of dicks. First of all, it is a travesty that WCBS had her blubbering instead of oh...I don't know...THE ACTUAL TORRE PRESS CONFERENCE??. Hell; even ESPN went live to that as soon as the football game was over.

And if I had a nickle for every smarmy thing I've heard her say on the air (either over the top pro-yankee or over the top anti-sox), I'd be retired.

Even though he became a total Yankee sycophant in record time, I thought that Steiner did a good job on the radio for them.

That is exactly right. What were the producers thinking allowing her mellow dramatic inanities to be aired in the first place, while Torre's press conference audio is bleeding through in the background. Inexcusable performance by WCBS. Just terrible.

I'm pretty sure that's a paid segment in the WCBS postgame. They do it all the time. The Clubhouse Report is what it's called. So they might have been contractually obligated.
Albert P. Schlegg
That was just horrible.

I've listened to them all year and it's really a perfect culmination of what a terrible job they do on a daily basis. Their homerism goes beyond the typical radio schitck you hear in most markets. Waldman proved the other night that she actually, really, honest-to-God believes the Yankee propaganda BS she spouts. She, in her heart of hearts, truly knows the Yankees to be the greatest sports franchise in the history of sports. She, in her most naked moments, truly knows Derek Jeter to be a blinding light from heaven humbly clothed in the Godly pinstripes of glory. She believes it so much that she cries when they lose. What is she 6?! ****ing pathetic.

If Castiglione ever did that, I'd puke. If Geffner ever did that, well, I guess it wouldn't surprise me too much...

While the whole event was a travishamockery, the bolded portion simply is not true. Waldman grew up a Red Sox fan and has on more than on occassion--during Yankee game broadcasts--has said as much and has refered to Dewey as her favorite player.

This whole thing was comical and I hope she stays with the Yankees for a long time. They deserve her biggrin.gif
