Brewers sign Kapler
The Brewers announced they have signed Gabe Kapler, 32, an eight-year veteran who managed in Boston’s farm system in 2007 after announcing his retirement as an active player.
Kapler, a right-handed hitter, has played in 850 major-league games with Detroit, Texas, Colorado and Boston, batting .270 with 64 home runs and 302 RBI, with a .331 on-base percentage and .418 slugging percentage. He played in 72 games with the Red Sox in 2006, batting .254 with two home runs and 12 RBI.

One of the really good people in baseball joins a talented young team. This looks like a good fit, and I wish Gabe the best of luck in helping the Brewers get to the 2008 World Series.

I didn't know he was that young. For all the problems he went, you'd figure he was at least 35.
Didn't he have a blog? Does anyoe know the link to it? I remember reading his words during postseason. He made some good comments.

“Gabe brings versatility and athleticism to the outfield position,” said Melvin. “He has always been a great teammate and possesses the determination to bounce back and become a valuable player to our club.”
That is so true. I'm glad someone is giving him the chance to bounce back. I think he will make a strong case for him.

If he gets any sort of playing time in MIL, he may actually put up decent numbers in that park.

Great news.
(He's not going to be on the Red Sox. My wife and I were hardly alone in calling him Gabe Krapler.)

It was a better feel-good story when he retired to manage at single A.
That he gave up on that so quickly tells me that a: he hated it or b: he thinks he's capable of exceeding his usual K®ap-tacular numbers.
I'm thinking it's 'a'

While the final roster isn't yet official, it appears as though Gabe Kapler has made the team and will be a Milwaukee Brewer on opening day. Definitely a good story.

Kapler was good, especially in 2004, as a back up and clubhouse presence. But in 2006, 12 rbis in over 70 games is not very productive. Didn't the Brewers sign Gagne (the big mistake of 2007). Maybe they needed someone to make Gagne look good in batting practice.

I second that motion, Gabe is a good guy and a class act. He will bring leadership and morale to that Brewer team.

Well, not with a bat, I assume.
