QUOTE
Adam Jones has left his Venezuelan Winter League team and flies to Baltimore tomorrow morning to take a physical so he can be dealt to the Orioles in exchange for pitcher Erik Berdard. No word yet on how many players going Baltimore's way.

On the actual deal itself: "(Bill Bavasi) called me yesterday and told me the news. I've got to go to Baltimore tomorrow morning and handle things there. I'm the centerpiece of the deal on the Mariners side. It's an honor to get traded for such a highly talented pitcher as Bedard is. He's one of the best. Last year he finished up as arguably one of the top candidates for the Cy Young. He's that good, so for me it's an honor. You know, I like Seattle, but if I am in Baltimore, as I think now I am, I'm going to embrace it and have the best time of my life in Major League Baseball."

Trends for the 2007-08 MLB Offseason:

1) Signing pre-arb players to extensions that buy out their arb years

2) Big name pitcher trades that drag out for EVER.

I think its done though. Obviously McPhail isnt going to say its done before they do the physical - If Jones ever fails his physical it would be a PR calamity.

confused.
the O's have plenty of money.
Bedard's a very good young pitcher.
why trade him?

He's indicated he wasnt interested in re-signing there. They did explore a deal earlier in the offseason, and while the details arent 100% clear, he either wanted far more than they were willing to pay or just wants out. I cant say Id blame him on either count. McPhail announced they are in a rebuilding period. Trading Tejada and then Bedard and Roberts could really net them a pretty impressive core of prospects. If theyre rebuilding its the smart move. You cant half-ass that kind of thing.

Actually, if Churchill is right, Adam Jones is a pretty ridiculous young player and those are some really exciting young arms theyre getting. As good as Erik Bedard is - and he's still tremendously underrated - the O's easily "win" this trade, IMHO. Sherrill is a nice pickup b/c they desperately need relief help right now to not be record setting awful AND if he comes through at all he can be traded for a decent package himself at the trade deadline... everyone is always looking for relief pitching. Sherrill was filthy last year, look at his numbers...

How about this: Jones, Tillman, Sherrill and Butler OR Lester, Coco, Lowrie, ? for your stud starting pitcher? Umm... pretty easily the Mariners package, if you ask me. Id take that package over the Hughes based Yankee offer for Santana and the Mets offer, too.

The last I heard on USSMariner about the nixed Bedard trade is that publicly, Angelos is steamed that someone let the cat out of the bag to the media, which turns out to be Adam Jones himself talking to a Venezuelan reporter, who talked to Geoff Baker from one of the Seattle newspapers, who printed the news in his blog.

Now the Mariners are trying to cover their butts -- after all, THEY told Adam Jones he was being traded, but didn't tell the 21-year-old he WASN'T SUPPOSED TO TALK TO ANYONE about it -- by saying there was an error in English/Spanish translation and it's the reporter's fault...oh, no, the interview was conducted in English, it's Adam Jones' fault for talking.

Anyone with a brain cell could easily figure out a trade was coming down when the M's pulled Adam Jones from his team's playoff games and sent him home to the States...another example of Bavasi being dumb again.

All that's moot, if the REAL reason Angelos nixed/delayed the trade is if he asked McPhail to offer Bedard a 5 year extension to his contract. Everything I've heard so far indicates that Bedard would gladly stay an Oriole if he got offered those many years.

My initial reaction is this is a great pick up for Seattle.

These negotiations are an absolute joke.

Unconfirmed speculation on a Baltimore radio show is that Adam Jones has a degenerative hip condition that's put the Erik Bedard deal on hold.
There's been nothing legitimate anywhere lending this any weight, but since the Baltimore Sun is starting to run with it ever so slightly now, we will as well. As the Sun's Roch Kubatko put it: "Maybe this will prove true later. We'll find out soon enough. But nobody at The Sun would go on a radio show and blurt out this kind of information without being absolutely positive (and obviously reporting it in the paper first). That's dangerous territory, especially when you're possibly impacting a young athlete's reputation and future earnings." Exactly right.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal believes the Orioles may be upset enough about Adam Jones' comments on the deal to call off the Erik Bedard trade or at least seek additional compensation.
Yeah, there's good reason the Orioles remain in the running for the title of worst run organization in baseball. Either the deal is good enough or it isn't. Who cares if Jones admitted 12 hours ahead of time that he was going to Baltimore for a physical? If Peter Angelos kills the deal as is -- it's believed to currently be a five-for-one including Jones, George Sherrill, Chris Tillman, Adam Butler and Kam Mickolio -- the Mariners should simply move on. Rosenthal believes the Orioles may now be holding out for Carlos Triunfel, who should be untouchable.

QUOTE
The Seattle Times in confirming that Adam Jones told a Venezuelan paper on Sunday that he was being traded to the Orioles, and an Orioles source told the Baltimore Sun that Jones was scheduled for a physical Monday in Baltimore.
Those plans changed, probably because the Orioles still hadn't gotten approval from Peter Angelos. Jones later changed his story, saying he didn't tell anyone he had been traded and was going to Baltimore for a physical, but that's almost certainly what the Mariners told him to say. The Times' Geoff Baker heard the audio recording that confirmed Jones' quotes from Sunday. All indications are that the Bedard deal is in the hands of Angelos, but that Angelos had something else to do today and wasn't ready to give the thumbs up or down.

QUOTE
Even though both Adam Jones and his winter ball manager, Luis Sojo, said so, the Orioles are denying the outfielder is on his way to Baltimore for a physical.
Mariners spokesman Tim Hevly confirmed that Jones is returning to the U.S., though he wouldn't confirm it was for a physical. The Orioles are steadfastly denying that any deal is done. "We do not have an agreement with the Mariners," president Andy MacPhail said. However, rumors aboud that the Mariners are sending Jones, Chris Tillman, either George Sherrill or Jeff Clement and a fourth player to Baltimore for Bedard.

From Rotoworld.

So Adam Jones said he was going to get traded, got on a plane, but didn't get on a plane, then Sherrill said he was getting a physical, then Angelos didn't know about the trade, then no one was on planes, then it just needed ownership approval, then the O's were pissed about Jones talking about the trade that wasn't a trade, then they claimed Adam Jones' had a degenerative hip condition.

Sounds about right.

The Orioles front office should be the subject of a reality show. I would tune in religiously.

One thing that I believe Sox and Yankee fans are in 100% agreement on. May Peter Angelos live a long and healthy life and never sell the Orioles. One less team in the AL East to worry about.

About the time this Bedard for Jones/Sherrill, etc. trade was really picking up steam, there was a rumor going around, started by a guy interviewed on a Baltimore sports talk radio station, I think, that Adam Jones had some sort of degenerative hip condition (see also http://www.blogtoplist.com/rss/adam-jones.html ).

Guess what, absolutely no red alert sounded in the Mariners' front office at that rumor.....and yesterday Eric Bedard was scratched from his Sunday start against the Angels because of a SORE HIP. Worse yet, he had the same sore hip condition in college. That, to me, sounds like Bedard may be the one with the degenerative hip condition.

Arrrrgh. Makes me actually LONG for the days of Woody Woodward (Seattle's GM in the 80s)...

Wow, sounds like either:

a) That guy on sports radio heard legit inside info but the wires were crossed/players switched, or...
b) ...no, on second thought it's got to be a)
