Full Version: Umpire's Neighbors Questioned by MLB
Royal Rooters > WE'RE TALKIN' BASEBALL > AROUND THE MAJORS

This story is almost just creepy and I totally support the umpires that are furious over the actions of MLB. The NBA scandal aside, has Bud Selig finally lost his mind?

I have a strange question...What can they do if an ump IS in the KKK? Unless it's breaking some kind of morality clause they have in their contract...
I mean, you know, the KK is evil and all, but I'm not sure why MLB security should care, unless an umpire is overtly making calls against minority ballplayers. Hmm, maybe I answered my own question. Is Milton Bradely heading up the investigation?

"You get someone from security, shows his credentials and starts asking these kind of questions, and right away what's the neighbor going to think other than the umpire is in trouble, he's done something wrong and he's going to lose his job."

Ironically, the startling randomness of the KKK question would make me (personally) think the opposite, that it's just a routine security background check and not an individually motivated investigation. I'm curious, though, if MLB considers membership in the KKK to be a serious potential problem for umpires -- and if so I wonder if it's (obviously) because so many MLB players are "colored" or if it's also because of the separate and competing loyalty oaths KKK members swear to. If the latter is a factor, then why stop at the KKK? Why not also forbid membership in Freemasonry or any other extra-governmental oath-swearing organization?

Geesh, my employer doesn't even know where I live.

Well, this is either a poorly executed witch hunt or they have some level of reasoning behind this line of questioning. Suppose we’ll know in due time.
