Scheduled starters: Derek Lowe v. Tim Wakefield

The game will be on ESPN, and will be called by Sean McDonough.

No radio today.

Fort Myers weather: 10 am observation at Page Field: Wind out of the northeast at 5 mph, visibility 10 miles, broken clouds at 7,500 and 9,000 feet, temperature 71F, DP 61F.

Forecast: A strenghthening low out in the Gulf is moving toward the west Florida coast, and could trigger some showers or thundershowers this afternoon, but it is Florida, and there is always a chance of thundershowers in the spring. Otherwise, it'll be cloudy and warm, in the low 80s, with light winds.

Play ball.

And welcome to Joe Torre.

Bill Doyle - McDonough’s call a painful reminder

Red Sox fans will hear a familiar voice in the TV booth when Boston hosts Joe Torre and the Dodgers at 1 p.m. today in a spring training game at Fort Myers, Fla.

No, Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy won’t be announcing the game on NESN. Former Sox announcer Sean McDonough will handle the play-by-play on ESPN.

...

What upset McDonough the most was finding out from a Boston newspaper reporter, not NESN, that he wouldn’t be back.

“I was surprised because there wasn’t any conversation, there wasn’t any negotiation,” McDonough said. “It was just out of the blue.”

Today will be the first Sox game McDonough has called on TV since he worked a couple of regular-season Sox games for ESPN in 2005. He admits that even back then, he felt out of sorts returning to Fenway Park.

“It was like being a stranger in your own home in some ways,” he said. “It’s still a little odd, but as time goes by, it gets a little easier.”

...

McDonough talked to the Arizona Diamondbacks about doing some of their games last season, but they wanted him to do too many. He wants to remain in the Boston area, but isn’t even sure if he’d accept an offer to do Sox games again. He doesn’t expect to be asked.

McDonough remains a Sox fan and wants them to win, but he doesn’t watch them much on television.

“I usually flip it on long enough to get the score,” he said, “and see how they’re going and then flip to something else. It is a little hard to watch it. It still stings a little bit not being there.”

I obviously don't have NESN, so my chances to watch games are limited to whenever ESPN wants to show me a game or two against the Yankees.

And I'll be damned if I have an exam this afternoon, meaning I will have to be studying or actually taking the exam while the game is going on. I know it's only a spring training game, but my streak of sorry luck continues...

Nice catch by Ellsbury. Running/diving/sliding catch going back on the ball. Made it look relatively smooth too.

Edit: Ellsbury just smacked a ground rule double. He is having a pretty good game. Coco better hope that root canal does not keep him out too long.

... to go along with a RBI double.

Hopefully his bat will get back to September '07 form.

Caught a little bit over lunch. I was only able to watch with one eye, but Wakes looked pretty good and D-Lowe struggled mightily.
